I received a warning via email recently about Reynolds Hot bags (the tinfoil like bags that you cook a whole meal in) In the warning it stated that a woman had her parrot in the kitchen and had left the room while cooking with the Reynolds hot bag. When she returned to the room the bird was having a hard time breathing, eyes swollen etc. a metalic smell in the air. The friend that sent this to me is a bird breeder and knew I had birds but I wanted to let glider owners know too. The woman is supposed to have contacted the company that makes them to alert them to this potential health hazard to pets.

Like so many things the airborne odor may not be harmful to humans (which is what the FDA tests for) but can be toxic to our beloved pets. I have received many warning of things that are supposed to make humans lives easier/better that are not so good for our pets. ie: glade plug ins, teflon coated cooking pots/appliances.

Oh so the bird couldn't breathe due to exitement, and his eyes were buggin' out at the sight of the kingly meal being cooked for him.. just kidding!!! Sorry been up for over 18 hours and i'm sleep deprived and getting silly !!!

I'm really glad you posted about the seriousness of the matter, now i don't use those hotbags, but it doesn't hurt to know. a lot of stuff birds are sensitive to might also be harmfull for our babies.. so i'm always a bit leery when it comes to chemical stuff.

Ok explain to me about the teflon coated cooking pots/appliances. I heard that somewhere also. But I wasn't sure what the whole story behind that is. Can someone please elaborate on it? The pots I have aren't coated with teflon but a teflon like material, anyone see a problem with that? As for the Glade Plug Ins... for general knowledge is it just Glade brand or all airfresheners that could be toxic to pets? I know there have been posts about incense and candles being burnt near gliders and that being a no no. But on the Glade Plug Ins is that just their brand or all plug in air fresheners?

Whomever has enough knowledge on these subjects might want to elaborate for everyone on the boards benefit.

Thanks so much for sharing about the cooking bags! Thanksgiving is coming up and I'm sure people would be using them. Even if they aren't dangerous to gliders and mammels, lots of people on this board have birds.

Well about the tefflon ( nonstick ) pans... I have read for birds, and gliders also, that when you heat that pan up too high, and you end up burning the tefflon coating in the pan, it puts out fumes, and those are tocix to animals.
I have no doubt they are tocix to us too, only they don't cause us to die because of our body mass.
But i really do wonder hwat sort of damage we are doing to ourselves..
I know nothing of the plug in freshners, since i don't use them.

I think I will write the company and ask a few questions.

Well the thing with teflon I heard with humans is that yes our body mass does protect us... but eventually after years and years of using them our chances of developing cancer are higher than if we didn't use them. Which of course almost everything in the world now causes cancer so... we can't protect ourselves from everything in the world. Well does anyone know the temperature that teflon has to reach that causes the toxic fumes? I have both non-stick and regular pots and pans, looks like I'll be using the regular ones more often now. I had completely forgotten about the teflon issue till mentioned here. Thanks for reminding me, I wouldn't have ever thought about it elsewise.

As I understand it. When the teflon or plug ins are heated it causes fumes and it is the fumes that are toxic. I imagine that is why the incense and candles have also been mentioned. Hope (bmxgirl) the reason you haven't had a problem so far may have to do with ventilation. If your house is large and well ventilated these may not cause a problem. But with winter fast approaching (we've already had snow) we tend to keep windows shut more, thus less ventilation and air flow.

BMXgirl...please let us know what you find out from the air freshener company. I also use them. Living in Phoenix I have my house open most of the time. I had my gliders this last summer and the house was closed with the a/c on and no problems. I would like to hear what they have to say.

Thanks
Steph

I also have parrots, so I have been avoiding non-stick items for many years. Teflon is a name brand but from what I have gathered other brands of non-stick cookware create the same hazzard. Also watch out for other small appiances that also have the same type of coatings such as some irons, portable electric grills and such. I also limit the use of most household chemicals to the time of year when I can put the animals outside and air the house well before bringing them back in. I use a lot of vinegar and baking soda for day to day cleaning, I think it is safer for all of us.

I cook with cast iron & porcelain coated pots/pans.
Has anyone heard anything about cooking with them?
I gave my non-stick away when I got my lovebirds. I had done some research before getting them & found out about the risk of teflon/non-stick poisoning. I didn't want to gamble with my new babies lives. Now I have Precious , I know I made the right choice .
Besides, I'm really beginning to enjoy cook with the cast iron cookware
