I'm heartbroken. I'm thinking about getting out of this whole glider thing. Poki makes number 5. My son found her at lunch time today (I had just done a head check around 9:30AM). She was on the bottom of the cage, but still alive. We rushed her to the vet, but she died on the way. The vet was able to get a blood sample this time (blood hadn't clotted yet). She said that there was a gram neg bacterium with both Desi and Wimbley, and that all (including Little Feller and Poki--she did the post mortem right on the spot) seem to have something going on with their liver. The cultures aren't back on Little Feller yet and Poki's are just now being sent in. I'm really over it. The misery of losing one glider after another is too hard for me. I have 10 gliders left...today. I am treating them with Baytril. They've already been treated for giardia. We are all baffled. I've had gliders since '99 and have NEVER had anything like this go on. It's killing me. I don't know what else to do to stop this illness.

Peggy, i'm deeply sory for your loss, i can totally emphasize with how you feel, and how lost, hurt, and confused you are. May i ask you some questions ? What housing did you have the gliders in, and what diet was fed ? Anything at all, that might hold bacteria, or anything that may have changed recently ? I am trying to help, and maybe get an understanding, of what may be going on. Tanja

I am so sorry! That's horrible! If your vet has seen what looks like Giardia, if you haven't had an ID on the parasite, it could be trichomonas. If you have treated and it's still there ask your vet to check into other products. May God bless you and save the rest of your family. XXOO to all of you! them 's !!!

My gliders get bml, fresh fruit and frozen veggies. vet says there is something effecting the liver, or so it seems. She noted that Poki was very yellow (nose, nails). She already told me that Desi's liver looked weird, like it was diseased but 'healed'...sort of like scar tissue. Wimbley's liver looked fine, but Desi and Wimbley both had some sort of gram neg bac....don't know yet about Little Feller or Poki on the bac, but Little Feller's liver wasn't normal, and neither was Poki's. Wimbley was the only one with a completely normal looking liver. Gobo didn't have a post mortem (he was the first to go, but we knew he had something terminal, so didn't feel post mortem was in order -- that was us, not the vet. She was disappointed we didn't take Gobo to her, even tho we knew he was sick. Oh well...as I said, 10 gliders, today. Oh, their cages are 2X2X5, and are thoroughly disinfected once a month, with regular cleanings inbetween. Paper is changed every other day, pouches every 3 to 4 days. Dishes are washed daily. vet says she can't help but think something dietary is going on. As I said, we feed BML, but that doesn't mean they eat it! Or, anything else we've tried, for that matter.

My condolences on your losses. My heart goes out to you. If the vet suspects something dietary, could it possibly be the brand or bags of Fresh Frozen foods you are feeding? Might be worth a try to buy all new bags of Fresh Frozen veggies & fruits. Try a different brand. Who knows, maybe a bag you are using somehow got unfrozen then refrozen at the store before you purchased it. I am just guessing. My prayers are with you & yours,

Peggy, I cannot even imagine the pain you're experiencing. When you get results back, please share them with Bruce and Ellen, and perhaps send them to Texas A&M for analysis. This just sounds so familiar -- nonspecific liver damage with no known etiology, present among your entire population, causing deaths with no obvious and identifiable symptoms, probaby due to something in the diet present over time... I would sure want to rule out aflatoxins. Until you know for sure, you probably need to assume that your remaining gliders are compromised. My vet uses a milk thistle preparation for compromised livers, and I'm convinced that the milk thistle, along with some extra herptavite in the diet helped prolong my Gladys' life. Since you're fairly sure it's liver involvement, I would immediately cut out any extra protein in the diet, and also any other foods that are difficult for the liver to metabolize. Peggy, I am just so saddened by this. I know you're just living in shock right now, and I hope you can find a cause and remedy very soon. Please know you're in many people's thoughts and prayers.

OMG Peggy.. *hugs*
I wish I knew more about illnesses but I only know what I've read. I will see if I can find anything out about liver problems in smaller animals.
