I have never seen such a small baby and I am worried about her. She cries and is energetic and Mom is taking good care of her, but my other babies were always bigger with hair. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Wow, she looks really small...she looks like my joeys did about 1.5 weeks before they came OOP, but they're my first joeys, and mom could've held them in for longer for all I know. I really have no experience.

I'm sure someone with more experience will be along soon! Good luck with your little one.

That baby does look awfully small, but then, so does the mom. Maybe it's just the picture of her.

Does the baby still go to the mom to nurse? I would think that this would be the most important thing to watch for.

And, by the way, Mommy has a beaitiful color to her.

Yeah, Mia is very small herself and an over groomer. She is one of the rescues from the colony of 6 that I took in. I seperated them all into pairs and I have her paired with another girl that had 1 joey IP but she cannibalized hers. That is why I am extra worried about this baby. She is still nursing, but not going all the way back in. She is also crawling around Mom an awful lot like she can't find the pouch, so I try to guide her to it.

Do you have a scale? If so, weigh her. Weigh her daily to ensure she is either gaining weight or atleast maintaining weight. You may need to supliment feed her to help out mom for a while.

When Duncan and Blake came oop, they each weighed only 8 grams each. Even with suplimenting, Blake didn't make it. I had to pull Duncan at a week oop because his parents totally rejected him. Please get supplies ready and keep a close watch on her that she is actually eating.

Check her tummy. You will be able to see a white patch just above her pouch and off to the side. That is milk in her stomach. If she doesn't have milk (the white patch), she isn't eating.

Read up on how to care for a rejected joey at this site

Hand Raising a Joey

and read the sticky threads also.

Thank you Dancing...I only have Wombaroo HP and Wombaroo 80< so I will run to Petco this afternoon and get some Esbilac and read up on those links. I haven't weighed the baby by herself, but Mom and baby together weigh 60 grams. My scale only goes by 10s for grams though.

What diet are you feeding mom? It sounds like she could use some more calories in her diet...but would need to do so in a way that doesn't throw off the ratios of the diet she is on.

She is actualy a great eater...I feed them all Judie's BML with pollen and acacia gum powder added, mixed frozen and fresh veggies, frozen and fresh fruit and tons of mealworms every night. I also sprinkle Wombaroo HP on their food every other night and leave insectivore fare in during the day. I don't know what else I could add..maybe yogurt more often? She is just really small. When she first came here, I could feel her ribs and she was even smaller than she is now.

[:"green"]She is very tiny & is oop about a week earlier than normal. She can still survive, but I would recommend supplement feeding her and keeping a very close eye on her. I have had joeys oop that early that have survived, but I have also had some that did not... Really, getting her supplement fed will be crucial to her survival. Chances are that since she is wandering around on her mother so much, she is not getting enough to eat & that is why she is oop so early. You can use "Wombaroo >0.8" if you have it, but "Wombaroo <0.8" would be better; otherwise, the Esbilac will be okay. Please do read the link Teresa gave you to my page about Hand Raising A Joey. Be prepared to help this little one out & to pull her if it becomes necessary. And please keep us posted... I'll be praying for her

some gliders are just small. But I would try to get her more protien. I had a really small momma who had 3 sets of joeys. Each twins. Only one joey survived The joey that did survive I had decided to feed Jibbet pinkies every week at least 2 times. After the last boy I retired her from breeding because I think she was just to small to handle all of it.

I just weighed the baby by herself and she is ony 5-6 grams The wombaroo <0.8 is the one I have..how do I mix it before I add the tsp of baby cereal to the TBSP of milk? It only tells me how to mix a litre on the box.

With my joeys, I bought the Esbilac (puppy milk) pre mixed (in a can). I then froze most of it in 1 table spoon ice cubes trays. With the joey this small and this young, I would use the Esbilac to supliment with. I can't help with the wambaroo. I'm not sure how to mix it. (what ratios) I did use some wambaroo milk replacer with Impact (colostrum replacer) and alternated feedings with the puppy milk but Duncan did better on the puppy milk. I didn't mix in the baby cereal.
Logic tells me (though I have nothing to base this on) that the added cereal will make it to thick for such a young joey.

Mix Wombaroo = 1 part Wombaroo to 2 parts water (bottled) or pedialyte.

[:"green"]At this age, the joey should have Wombaroo without the cereal... As Cycy said: Mix 1 part Wombaroo with 2 parts water or pedialyte. You won't be able to start making it into a "formula" until the joey is a couple of weeks older.

Thanks guys...you are all wonderful!!! I just got back from Petsmart and I got the Esbilac, bottles and nipples and syringes (I couldn't find the ones I had) I will try supplementing her tonight with the esbilac since it is already mixed and go from there. Thanks for the note on the cereal(I was wondering about that!) Another question...she is more wrinkly today than yesterday...does this mean she is getting dehydrated? Will the formula help this or is there something else I can do?

This does mean the baby may be getting dehydrated. Her being so small, you really need to get her hydrated. Pedialyte mixed with the puppy replacer would help. Maybe Suz has a better idea for you but, what the pedialyte does is replace it's eletrolytes to help keep the baby hydrated....

[:"green"]I agree about the Pedialyte or Liquilyte. They are the best things to rehydrate a glider quickly. You can mix it 50:50 with the Esbilac and that will work quite well. Or you can alternate feeding Pedialyte and Esbilac. The wrinkly skin is definitely a sign of the beginnings of dehydration. Also, make sure the joey is warm before you try to feed it, or it won't eat at all.

Okay..I got through the first feeding (just the esbilac) I wrapped her in a microwaved fleece blankie and followed Suz's directions. I put her back in with mom and mom started licking her. I am sending my husband to get some pedialite and I will do the 50/50 next feeding...when should that be?

[:"green"]I would check on her every hour to see if she needs to be fed. She's so little right now that normally she should be drinking almost constantly from her mother. Since she's not, you'll have to check her often. She may not need to be fed that often, but check to make sure. So glad to hear that she drank for you - that's half the job right there, just getting them to drink the milk.
You're doing a fantastic job! Kudos to you!!!

I agree, good job. Hand feeding a joey is so much harder then you would think. It is emotionally challenging and exausting (waking up constantly to check on them) but in the end it is so worth it. Just know you are not alone in this.
It is wonderful that Mom is/has not rejected at this point because there is so much comfort that the little one will get from mom even if she isn't getting her food from mom. Just keep an eye out and if you find the joey by itself and either crying or cold, that is the first sign of rejection. Also watch for any agressive behavior from Mom. Make sure you have the things you need at the ready.

Hang in there, you're doing great so far!

I fed her again last night(I found her in the opposite end of the tunnel mom was in)with the pedialite mixed with Esbilac and she actually did better than the first time. It is so cute watching her smack her little lips..LOL Mom was barking like crazy for her, so I put her back in and she was latched onto a nipple when I went to bed. I woke up early to check on her and I couldn't find her anywhere. I tore the whole cage apart and she wasn't there. Then I looked at mom and she looked chunkier...baby was ALL the way back in Moms pouch ...nothing sticking out, the opening wasn't even stretched! Is this mom's way of telling me...Hey..leave my baby alone? I attached another pic of her from last night

I think you are still going to have to monitor this little one very closely, checking on them often, but I am glad to hear things are going well so far!

This is good news! Maybe Mom will take it from here, it's possible that just your couple of supplement feedings helped mom a little in catching up with her milk supply somewhat... sounds like mom wants to be the mom now!!

WooHoo!!

I'd still keep a close eye out, and I know you will!! You may still have to supplement here and there to help mommy....

[:"green"]Excellent news! (and great picture,too! )
Sometimes the moms just need a breather & that's where we step in. Still keep a close eye on the joey and try to supplement feed 2-4 times a day if you can so that Mom can get the breaks she needs.
