Question about supplementing, and various others #101737

I've started to supplement Alistair and Amy's joeys, as I don't think they're getting enough to eat. I have a couple of questions.

1. Today is their 7th day OOP. If Amy hadn't been feeding them enough, wouldn't they have died by now? I still don't think they're getting enough food (their bellies always look empty), so I started supplementing them yesterday.

2. The supplementing is not going too well. I tried two different ways. First, I tried putting Wombaroo in the palm of my hand and guiding them towards it, but they didn't even touch it. Second, I tried putting the milk on their lips with a syringe, and this is kind of working...they lick the milk off their lips. BUT, they will only lick off 5-6 drops before falling asleep in my hand! (I have them wrapped in a fleece blanket). Shouldn't they be eating more?

3. I noticed yesterday that their eyes are open at day 6 OOP (both joeys). Isn't it a bit early for that?

Thanks in advance!

Kristy,

Moms usually nurse during the daytime while resting. Nighttime is for playing and eating. Amy may have had one joey with her while the other was sleeping or resting. Dad usually stays with the joeys to keep them warm and quiet. If a joey is out in the cage and mom and/or dad does not go get him, then you need to start worrying.

I failed to mention the proper way of supplementing the joeys in the email the other day and for that I am apologetic. Take a joey and wrap him with a fleece blanket so he does not wriggle so much. Take the tip of the catheter into the side of his mouth and gently squeeze the syringe. Keep a soft cloth or a piece of fleece handy, so you could wipe any feeding from his nose, so he would not be asphyxiated. It may be hard to get the catheter into the side of his mouth at first, but once you get the hang of it, it isn't as hard. The hard part is keeping the joey still while feeding. As far as dehydration goes, I would offer him a water bottle. He would feel water on his lips and start lapping up the water from the bottle.

As far as the joeys opening their eyes, the average is 10 days OOP. Your joeys are very healthy and growing very nicely, hence they opened their eyes earlier than average. That is a great sign! You have done such a good job with Amy while she had the joeys IP and now look, both joeys have their eyes open earlier than average!

Kristy, I LOVE it when you email or IM me anytime you have questions! It means that you are doing such a wonderful job with my babies and their new little babies! Thank you so much for the latest pics of the boys' open eyes! It is like, "Hello! Welcome to the world!" <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" /> I love it! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> Give those babies a kiss for me, including mom and dad. Many hugs, Kristy, for giving them such a wonderful home! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hug2.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hug2.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hug2.gif" alt="" />

[:"green"]Looks like Jen's got you covered! I'll just add that the first few times you try to feed them they will only take a few drops. As they get used to it, they will drink more. Keep up the great work! (And we'd love to see those pictures, too!!!)

Thanks guys...I'm so attached to these little ones; they HAVE to make it. Here's a pic of one of them when I was feeding them last night. (This is what I meant when I said he kept falling asleep in the fleece...it was so cute!).

Heh, Jen, you are welcome any time!

Thank you for the comments; I also think that my babies are the sweetest. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

So, if they've survived this long it must mean that they're getting SOME food from mom, right? How many times should she be going back to nurse them through the night? I know just about every time I check the cage at night she's out playing, and when I wake up in the morning, same thing. Sometimes Alistair is in the pouch with the joeys, but sometimes he's not - I've seen them leave the joeys alone for 45 minutes.

Last night when I was supplementing, mama was [censored] out, so that's a good sign. (I left the parents in the cage and took the pouch with the babies out. It's the only way I can get to the babies to feed them! When the parents are in the pouch, they're laying on top of the babies, and if I try to take the parents out, the babies cling to them...it's cute).

So, I'm going to try to supplement when I get home, but I don't know if I can...I hope that my babies don't die as a result of my failure to supplement. They seemed weaker last night (or it could be just because I'm paranoid).
