To those that feed pinkies regularly…

Let me first state that I do not intend for this to be a debate about feeding them, I do and I just want some advice about it…

I feed about one a month to my female, she is non-breeding, but the smallest, and some of you may have read about the fact that my one male has given her mating wounds now twice, once after neuter…

So the question for those that feed pinkies to non breeders… on the night that you do feed the pinkie do you still provide a full and regular dinner / meal ?

Thanks!

John, as long as it's only once a month...If it were me, I would feed her regular diet along with. She may not eat as much of it, since she filled up on pinky mouse (they DO love them, don't they?? I couldn't stomach live (that's just me)...but I do feed frozen on occasion-and fed a lot of them when our mom was expecting/nursing), but it is there and available for what she wants of it. Hope that helps.

Like Jen said offer the full meal. I use bml and I do offer just a tad bit less of the mixture only because I know they won't eat it all on the nights I feed pinkies. I would feed the full meal and then notice how much of the meal she doesn't eat... so the next time you can cut back just a bit.

I no longer feed pinkies because I had a bad experience with them and I work at a mouse farm, lol. However if you see that they are fighting over the pinkies I would set up a smaller cage and feed one in the cage and the other in the smaller cage until most of the pinkie is consumed then place them back into the same cage together. Since you feed infrequently this will not effect your gliders bonding. Also about an hour or less should be sufficient. Once a glider gets a pinkey they will usually sit and eat it until it is gone.

You could also try to feed the pinky in the morning after she has eaten her full meal. I`ll bet she`ll still find room for that whole pinky lol

I don't feed my gliders pinkies but the Taronga Zoo(Sydney, Australia) diet feeds day old chicks once a week to their gliders. I have a question. Do they discard the skins of the pinkies?

I have not had a problem with my gliders fighting over Pinkies, I primarily only feed one to my female, she makes pretty quick work of it, and I distract the boys with mealies or just play…

Jett – as far as I have noticed there is no waist discarded..

I fed live pinkies for the first time the other day, lets just say wow. I think frozen works just fine. ANYWAY.

My girl gets pinkies once a week, she is the only one that likes them. She doens't like chicken or egg to much, and I'm not into feeding crickets, so it's a trade. Everything gets eaten. My males don't like them, Pik just likes to pick them up and carry them around while Togepi chases after him. Zeebo just smacks them and walks off. So I just feed one to her and Pik goes about his business with his veggies.

I still feed a regular meal but the pinkie nights I don't give extra treats(mealies/chicken/dried fruit) during the day. I figure is she isn't as hungry, it's not a big deal, but if she is, then she can eat. I don't have any problems with her weight, they are very active with there wheel and have plenty of playtime.

I would think that because your is healing and what you consider small, it won't hurt to have it all.

Is it okay to give pinkies to a female if she has a joey in pouch? And is it okay for me to feed her live pinkies?

If you can stomache live pinkies, yes. As far as I know, it's GOOD to feed pinkies to pregnant and nursing mommas. It's extra nutrients for them since they are being taxed with caring for another.

pinkies are a good extra source of protein/calcium for nursing moms. My girl gets them everytime she`s pregnant, only frozen though, I don`t have the heart to feed live ones.

I could tolerate feeding live ones but how often do I feed it to her? Can my male have one too?

Your male can have one...in fact, if he likes them, better give him one or they could fight over it (my male got one every time our pregnant/nursing mom did for that reason, lol). With a pregnant or nursing mom, every nutrient needed to produce that new life is taken from mom's body...particularly protein and calcium. Mice are excellent for the added protein requirements, and we fed extra yogurt and Ensure with a slight amount of extra calcium while she was pregnant and nursing. If you can stomach cutting one in half for mom and dad to share, fuzzies are actually higher in calcium (they're just big) because their bones are more solid (which they also eat)..so they have a better CA:PH ratio. We fed either 3 pinky mice a week, or 1/2 fuzzy split between mom and dad three times a week, throughout pregnancy and nursing until the joeys were weaned, if that helps. If dad is eating them also, expect him to get a little pudgy for awhile, lol, from the extra calories...with mom it all goes to the babies and maintaining her own levels at the same time.

We used Petco's frozen Mice on Ice (guaranteed free of bacteria or parasites)...and served frozen. My guys didn't care and just ate them right up...we called them mousesicles. The frozen makes handling them a lot easier.

I've always been scared to feed mine pinkys because I would think they would eat their babies thinking they were pinkys!! (If they would hurry and have babies) But it looks like you guys don't have that problem so maybe I'll get some. Are they at the pet store because I've never seen them for sale?

LOL, Kat

Here at Petco, they keep them in a small freezer near the fish (why near the fish I have no idea)...they should be able to direct you to where in the store they are. Mice on Ice also has a website..I don't think they can be shipped (could be wrong)..but they might be able to direct you to someone in your area that has them if a petco is not available. PetSmart here doesn't carry them, but I don't know if that's true in all areas.

Here is their website: miceonice.com

I don't know why that link isn't working properly (I think it's their website)...here's another...and yes, they can ship. This one might give more site navigation options, or you can do a search for miceonice.com and it will come up with most, if not all, of the pages on the site.

I've used Mice on Ice. I went in with some other friends and got a large shipment (you have to do that, or it's not cost effective, since you're also paying for shipment with dry ice). I would recommend them.

kindof but
Quote:

(why near the fish I have no idea

They probably keep them near the fish because they only have one freezer and the freezer probably also has brineshrimp and other frozen foods for fish. Could be!!

Back on topic... they will not think their joeys are a pinky mouse. They smell totally different and our gliders are alot smarter then that! One of my mommas actually ate her first 2 joeys, then the last 3 joeys I gave her pinky mice weekly and she raised those 3 joeys with no problems.

What's a fuzzy? And do they have live pinkies at PetCo? I know a pet shop that has loads of live pinkes in the Brandon area (which is 30 mins away). But we ever hardly go there.

A fuzzy is a baby mouse that is 3-7 days old. A pinky is called that because when mice are born the have no hair and are pink. A fuzzy is the baby mouse right after the hair has started coming in.
