My Kira was just diagnosed with a tumor in her belly. I have also been in contact with Donna (super, super friendly and so nice to get back with me and share all the info about Darcy, as I'm sure you experienced). She was giving Darcy oral pred. which Kira was already on, we are waiting on the VAL syrup (ordered), and I have switched her to Darcy's diet to help keep up her weight. As of this week, her weight is up and her energy and activity level is up as well! Don't know what will happen, but at least I feel like I am doing something for her (and isn't hurting her). If you want to talk, IM me and I'll send you my phone #. I wish you all the luck with your little guy.

The breeder told you gliders couldn't get cancer? I thought all mammals could, and probably some fish and stuff too. Hmmm. I haven't ever had a glider with cancer, but every one of my ferrets has been lost to cancer rather than old age (4 so far and I am down to 2 ferret children). :-( My understanding is that it appears to be a genetic predisposition in some of them (as a side note, they all happened to come from the same "ferret farm" even though they were all rescues from different places and were very different ages, based upon the brands on their ears). Unfortunately, what triggers the cancer to start is unknown. Of course, that is only what I have read about ferrets but I don't know specifically about sugies.

I actually talked to a lady yesterday that said she has had 4 male ferrets and she had found out that if you neuter them to early it will triger cancer, but I've never herd of gliders getting cancer. I'm glad to know it now though.

That's good to know about ferrets... I have very little history on my children so I don't know how old they were when they got neutured. Just that they all have the farm brand on their ears. :-( Hopefully the last two will be able to have longer lives! I would imagine that it could be the same for suggies? If they get neutured too early can it trigger cancer? Why does it do that? Something with the immune system or something? This is one of those days that it would be nice to be a scientist. Or know a few good ones at least.

Kira is a girl, so neutering (spaying) doesn't even enter into the cancer equation with her. She does have a history of hormonal imbalance/problems (which might relate to the neuter theory, I guess). But I don't know that one even has anything to do with the other in her.

The posts about neutering causing cancer caught my eye. I am not a vet nor am I an expert on ferrets, but I am a zoology grad who has spent a lot of time interning with vets. From my experience talking to vets, usually neutering animals greatly REDUCES the risk of cancer. Part of it is the kind of obvious reason that by removing parts the animal cannot get cancer in those parts. Also I believe there is some research that surges or imbalances in hormones may trigger cancer (cancer=uncontrolled growth of cells, and hormones can regulate cell growth), so many vets I have talked to feel that neutering also reduces cancer risk in that respect. There very well can be literature in ferrets I've never heard about, but in general everything I've heard about neutering and cancer is that neutering reduces cancer risk and in general reduces the risk of other possible health problems.
