One of my co-workers asked me if my girls know their names. I told her that I didn't think so at this point but I can't really tell since they don't pay much attention to anything I tell them anyway grin

This really got me thinking, so what about yours?

A few of mine don't pay any attention, but at LEAST 4 of mine respond to their name. Either by looking, or gliding to me when I say it. smile

My oldest definitely knows her name. It's cute cause in the morning I'll wake up and walk into her room and softly call out her name and she'll pop her head out. smile She's not even fully bonded but she does respond pretty well to her name.

None of mine :\
It seems like they have a short term memory so it just doesn't seem possible for them to learn trick or names.
The reason why I'm saying that they have a short term memory is because I know someone who got bit by one before because the two males got too close to eachother, their cages used to be close to each other, I had it close because I was hoping to combine the two groups. One is a neuter male.
But instead they fought and tried to grab each other, when my friend tried to stop em, the neuter one bit him and it was wild. But right after he stopped, he went on my friend's shoulder like nothing happened. The next thing I know, he's like his best friend.
It's weird.
It might of been because he was in a fight or flight mood and it could of been like an on or off switch... but not sure....
I'm sure they do know your scent and sound.

My 3 boys know their names when their being good or want something. When their being bad or just want to do their own thing they don't even hear me. Gliders to me are like 2 year old children.

i don' know if they know their names or if it's more a vocal recognition.. i have my two girls every night when i get off work i go in and say hi my girls and she looks at me like hi mommy.. wheres my food. theyre the only ones who really responds other than stewie.. soon as he sees me he jumps on the door wanting out lol.
i think at least with mine it's a vocal and scent thing.

They most definitely are able to learn names, and tricks.

I have soooo many posts about this. this is the most recent one where she showed she responded to her NAME, not just my voice
http://www.glidercentral.net/ubbthreads/...his#Post1019354
if you check out my glider link in my siggy I have a site where I put up videos of her coming to me and even some tips on training. it absolutely is possible to train them.

when "name training" use a soft voice, and do it everyday. must be consistent!

Sure they do! Not only their names, they actually recognize words and sentences and associate these with actions. Like for example if Gizzy ever gets on the glider floor, I will call out and say "come Gizzy quickly" and he KNOWS that he is in danger and will find any and every way to get to me in less than a second.

Mine sure do. But they are like cats they only come to me if they feel like it. Sometimes they make me come and get them. shakehead Other times they run because they know its time to go back in their cage so another cage can come out. Smart little buggers.

Awesome! I will check all this out now.

How very interesting to hear everyone's thought's on this. Maybe mine are still in the "terrible two" stage and hear what they wanna hear cause they sure do hear the opening of their pine nut and mealie containers. wink

Awh, reading this post makes me hope that my girls learn their names someday. I picked very different sounding names on purpose, hoping they'd learn them!

My boy does. I have too many nicknames for the girls; I think they are pretty confused. They seem to just come when I call in general. But the male definitely responds differently to his own name.

One of my gliders definitely knows his name but I'm not sure if the other does. He's contrary. They both know certain phrases, their favorite being "chicken time" when they get a chunk of chicken. When I say "chicken time" they both run back inside their rept and wait on the specific shelf where I give them their chicken.

Each morning, after all mealies have been fed and they've gone to snuggle up in their pouch...I walk in and say "where's my littlest monkey? Where's mama's littlest monkeyyyyyy???" And my little Bug pops her little hands out of the pouch, waiting for me to pick her up.

Hmmmm, since her name is Bug and not Littlest Monkey, does this count? roflmao

Ive only had the boys 3 weeks but my bigger boy Baka already seems to respond to his name. Manu, he just ignores me unless he is getting a treat. Typical male...only way to get a response is if there is something in it for him, lol
