I am hand raising a male joey, (since 4 days OOP) and he is now 18 days OOP but does not have all his fur like I see with pics of others his age. Is there a reason for this or am I doing something wrong?...mostly has no fur on his belly. I'm worried!!!

I'm sure he is just fine. Hand raised joeys often look really scruffy until they are eating and grooming on their own. Normally their parents would keep them all clean and fluffy. It is an art form that us humans just have not mastered for them.

I'm in south east Kansas. About an hour south of Kansas City. 20 miles north of Ft. Scott, right off of Hwy 69.

Some joeys also come out with only a little peach fuzz, especially if they came oop a little too soon. Also, hand raised ones can look pretty rough and can also lose a little fur. They also take a little longer for their fur to fill in like regular joeys. If you have any questions on hand raising feel free to pm me. I have had experience hand raising. Its a lot of work and can be VERY stressful. Just a little tip...use a baby toothbrush to groom the joey a few times a day. This will help fluff the fur up a little and will also teach it how to groom. They really enjoy it too!

I forgot to add that the fur on their bellies is usually the last to come in. So I wouldn't be too worried if it doesn't have any on its belly. I hope you are able to post pics soon. I can't wait to see it! I love little joey pictures!

Brandi, thanks for all that info! I just think he looks scruffy. he does groom himself with his back feet...it's rather quite cute to watch him do this. I am using 'SUZ' Joey Formula from her website so I hope he is getting the right nutrition for fur growth. yes I will post pics!

Brandi is the best when it comes to hand razing joeys. I know she was a very big help with me and my triplets even after I lost 2 of them. I don't know what I would have done with out all of her help and she doesn't care how many times or how late you call, text or email.

I am using 'SUZ' Joey Formula from her website so I hope he is getting the right nutrition for fur growth. Handraising a joey is a tough job, but it's all worth it in the end! Are you using the Brisky's supplement or the Wombaroo milk replacer? Is he gaining steadily? If so, just keep doing what you are doing! If not, you may want to consider the Esbilac puppy formula. The joey I'm currently feeding is thankfully able to stay with her parents between feedings, so we didn't have to go through that scruffy stage, just a dangerously scrawny and dehydrated stage. Please post pics when you have a chance!
