i hope i spelled that correctly! "spoon full of sugars" is selling this product,i ordered some,& would like to know how to feed this. would i just sprinkle this on all of their food?
they want me to give only a tiny bit @ first, until they get used to eating it,& then increase amt over time.
anyone else here feed this? would i put this in their meals(food), or could i also add it to the diet. we're on candy's blended diet, & will be contacting her, but was just wanting to know from here if anyone else is feeding this

I am not a big fan of just adding things to a glider diet because it looks good or just because it is something new being sold.

I am also reluctant to add any thing to glider meals using the 'sprinkle it on' method because it is impossible to know how much you have actually added, whether the first glider to the food gets too much or if the last glider gets none. Random dosages of anything just makes me uncomfortable.

If you feel it is necessary and want to add it to the Blended diet mix, determine the measured amount you would feed daily and multiply by 60 to get the amount to add to a batch of the Blended diet. It would then be evenly distributed in the diet and each glider would get an amount proportional to their individual appetite.

This is your decision, but I do not think it is necessary.

Josefine, what is this product for? Is it to boost the immune system, or help with the liver function? I am just curious to know if it is for an ill glider or just preventative for health issues or...

I remember of buying the tablets many years ago, for weight loss and it did work. What I bought was from the health food store and was for human consumption.

Connie I also bought Spiraluna for human use, the product I got was to help with immune system. I would love for 'spoonful of sugars' to reply to this post too if possible. Will you ask them josefine? It will be nice to know. thumb

I have never even heard of that stuff until now. I am also curious as to what it's purpose is.

I personally wouldn't add it to a good diet if your gliders are healthy. As long as they are on a good diet then they should be getting the nutrients they need. Adding stuff could throw the diet off and have an ill effect on your gliders. Unless a glider experienced vet has recomonded it I wouldnt use it. But like I said, that's just my personal opinion. If you decide to use it I would really check into it first.

i have tried to send them an e mail for some time now, & my computer (or their site) isn't letting me. i need some type of 'product key', of which i don't have.
she is from florida, & her last post here was in dec of 08.
her site is sort of 'new', new to me, anyway.

Spirulina is a very beneficial blue green algae that is safe for consumption.
Please follow the link above for more information, as the post contains information from many different sources and I'm not sure if we are allowed to copy them over to GC or not.

I have been adding spirulina to my glider diet for about 2 years on the advice of Dr. Walsh. The decision was made to add more green foods and more plant proteins to my diet and fewer animal proteins. Spirulina is just one of the green foods that I add to my diet now. I am very pleased with the results for my gliders in terms of activity level and overall general health. I have also noticed that minor illnesses (infections, etc) are overcome more quickly since switching to a green diet.

Celeste began selling the spirulina because there are many of us who add it to our diets. (Please note that for me personally, I am NOT adding it to a diet such as HPW or the blended diet. I feed a green diet that is not a "modification" of these other diets. I cannot speak for others). It is best to investigate and research any new ingredient and discuss it with your vet before adding it to your diet. The "Ingredient Checklist" section of The Sweet Spot is set up to help others in this research. This is where the link above will take you.

It's one of the ingredients in Naked Brand Green Machine juice which I started adding to the diet I feed many months ago and I am very happy with it.

Jackie_Chans_Mom, thank you for the information. I hope that Ottomom responds to this thread as it will be great if we, who are feeding the blended diet, can add Spirulina to the diet of our fur butts as we have one guy who is exceptionally small and he will benefit from the added immune system booster.

As I stated above, I do not know how much to add if mixing into the Blended diet. I do not know what dosage you would use.

It appears many folks are using various "green juices" in their diets that contain Spirulina. I did find a breakdown of the Naked Brand Green Superfood Juice and 32 ounces contains only 2600 mg Spirulina. 1 oz raw Spirulina is 28 gm (nutritiondata.com) so 2600 mg is 0.09 oz or 0.18 TBS (abt 1/2 tsp) in 32 oz.

If you choose to add Spirulina to the Blended diet, I have no clue how much you would use. I do not know how much is too much. One comment in the Sweet Spot discussion mentioned that some parrots developed itchyness due to Spirulina
http://thesweetspot.forumotion.net/ingredient-checklist-f60/spirulina-t386.htm

If you feel it is necessary and want to add it to the Blended diet mix, determine the measured amount you would like to feed daily and multiply by 60 to get the amount to add to a batch of the Blended diet. It would then be evenly distributed in the diet and each glider would get an amount proportional to their individual appetite.

I do offer Odwalla Green Juice now and then along with my glider's dinner but I consider it a healthy treat. I do not plan on adding to the diet or feeding it on a daily basis.

i fed it last nite for the first time, i didn't add it to the diet, but sprinkled less than 1/8 tsp. into the meal, stirring it in.
this stuff is really fine, & messy!!
the kids did seem to scarf down the food better than they had in a long time, but they still didn't eat all of their supper.
i plan on sprinkling it into the meals each nite, just a bit,& hopefully i may now have something that my babies will eat.
it has been over a year now, that my girls would ever have eaten most all of their supper.the boys evidently are following their lead.the first 30 days (quarantine time) my boys ate everything, now they are as picky as my girls.
i feed them w/the same goal that everyone else does that is a member here, or of any other forums.
this is to feed them as nutritiously as possibly. i am forever throwing more food out than what they eat.

Josefine, I know you have the health and well-being of your gliders at heart! We first met at Suz's glider gathering, and I watched you fill your gliders' dish with over twice the normal portion size. You said you just wanted to make sure that your babies had enough! Are you feeding the 2 teaspoons of blended diet, 1 tablespoon of veggies and 1 tablespoon of fruits the diet calls for? I'm just wondering if you are throwing away more than they eat because their bellies are just full. How are your gliders' weights? Have you noticed any weight loss? How about the condition of their fur and overall health?

These are just some thoughts! I too feed the blended diet. My gliders have been eating extra lately, possibly because of the change in seasons. I have also ordered from Celeste. She responds quickly to emails. Make sure you are using the correct email address!

I'm going over to TSS to read about spirulina now. I was just talking to a reptile buddy about that tonight. He dusts his crickets with it before feeding his chameleons and other reptiles. I'm always up for learning something new!

Hi everyone...sorry I have been working hard on getting orders out and have not been on the forums much lately! Josephine...yes the Spirulina is MESSY! It is an utra concentrated fine powder and clings to everything!

I have been adding a teaspoon to my double batch of blended diet right now and I don't feel that it really throws anything off because it is a fine powder and does not add volume to the mix just plenty of "good for you" anti-oxidants, fatty acids, plant proteins, etc... main function is to boost the immune system.

I am going to be trying out a veggie relish with the Spirulina mixed into it as well to see if my gliders will eat it that way too.

Nancy, i was putting in more @ that time to keep 'em pacified b/c of the trip.i feed 4 ice cubes of food,& 2 tsp of the blended diet. i have 4 gliders,so,I've been feeding 1 cube per glider.
they eat just enough to keep their weight the same each week.
i put less than 1/8 tsp onto each ice cube,& defrost the cubes,& fold the stuff into the food.
i will be one to probably try anything that someone has found that their gliders love to eat, & it would be nutritious for them.
Celeste,i sent you a pm earlier, did you get it? i couldn't tell if i sent it correctly.

I have not fully read/researched this but just on my first looks, I am concerned about the iron content. It has 44% iron. Iron can prevent calcium absorption. It also has 12% salt. Another concern?

Now those percents are percent of recommended daily value but recommend for who/what?

Dancing - those percentages are for a human adult on a 2000 calorie diet.

The 3% calcium is not a remarkable feature either. That translates to 30 mg calcium in 1 oz (28 gm or 2 TBS) That is 5 mg per teaspoon and would not change the ratio of any of the recognized diets.

Thanks.

But then I have to ask, if it doesn't change any of the ratios, and the percents/amounts are so small, how is such a small amount benefiting the gliders?

Like everyone else, I'm always looking for healthier ways to care for my gliders.

I understand from the posts on SweetSpot (links in above posts) that this is felt to have other beneficial health properties. I have just not seen anything that defines how much is appropriate to add to glider diets.

Many people are using the various 'green juice' products in their own personal glider diets - to some degree for the benefits of the Spirulina in the juice. It is however a very small part of the 'green juice'.

My concern is - we have no information on how much is beneficial and how much is TOO MUCH.

I cannot assume that adding 1/2 tsp of the powder is safe without some input from a vet with respect to the benefits of this product and the safety of adding that, or any other amount.

=/ I feed spirulina to my saltwater fish. I guess I just have an issue with feeding 'fish food' to the gliders.

It may not be a concern but how can feeding algae, which is not even a close relative of anything they would eat naturally, beneficial? Maybe it is, and I'm mistaken, but just some food for thought. smile

Also, high amts of Iron in humans causes constipation. I assume it would work the same way for gliders.

My concern is - we have no information on how much is beneficial and how much is TOO MUCH.

Candy
Do you have this information about ANY of the things you feed your gliders (i.e. protein, iron, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, vitamin A, vitamin B, vitamin C, vitamin D, etc, etc, etc)? If so, please share it with us.

Lets face it, none of us know what the nutritional requirements are for gliders. None of us have sound laboratory science to back up the diets we feed. We are all just doing the very best we can for our own.

If you feel you like what you read about spirulina and want to add it to your glider diet, then by all means, discuss it with your vet.

I have looked at the amounts of a number of nutrients in the Blended diet, compared to HPW and BML since there are no recommended guidelines.

Val, I just asked this question on SS also - Do you use the Spirulina powder or is the amount in the Knudson's green juice enough in your Green Variation diet? (Spirulina powder is not on your list of additional supplements you use in the diet.)

If you are using the powder in your diet, how much did Dr. Welsh recommend adding on a regular basis.

My diet recipe is posted on TSS.
http://thesweetspot.forumotion.net/glider-gourmet-f76/val-s-green-variation-t86.htm

The powder is not listed in the list of extras on purpose.

I will not comment on whether the powder is high in sodium and iron as I do not claim to know just what the nutritional requirements of gliders are. I wish someone DID have that information, but for now I will have to trust my own research and the advice of my vets and pathologists.

Oh, and it is Dr. WALSH, not Welsh. I only correct it because people get so confused between Dr. Walsh and Dr. Welch (both of whom practice in Tulsa and see gliders).
