Okay, I know about "pet insurance" and that is not what I am looking for. I have 14 adult gliders, and due to recent events in the community (Linsey and Alicia) I have been thinking hard about getting my gliders insured in case of disaster. Kinda like adding them to a renters policy... but State Farm laughed at me and wouldn't add them. frown I am interested in disaster coverage, just in case something terrible happens in the home and harms the animals... Does anyone know of a company who would provide that?

That's terrible that they wouldn't add them. frown You have a lot of money tied up in your gliders, I'm sure. It seems only right to want to insure them. I hope someone has some ideas for you because my husband and I are at a loss as to what to suggest to you. Perhaps it'd be better to go the way of small business insurance?

If I am getting the qeustion right , you are not looking for pet insurance, but insurance in case of a disater to cover the gliders!!?? In that case then I don't think you will be able to find one, but google it & see if anything comes up.. The best thing would be to get pet insurance or to ask them what you are looking for..

How does small business insurance work? That might be the way to go...

I'm so sorry they laughed at you.. X_X I really think that's BS! Ugh, people.. I Don't know how to go about it honestly, my mother or boyfriend have always dealt with that, not me.. but.. they ARE an investment and in some ways almost a small business, I don't know why they wouldn't.. or why SOMEONE wouldn't..

home ins etc wouldn't insure pets like that. In fact be careful, they could drop u and not insure ur home if you approach them if they know you are breeding exotic animals out of your home as it is an insurance risk to them depending on the insurance company. insuring small businesses without living beings is one thing, however insuring a living being is another. they would likely insure the non-living things within your business such as if you vended, but i do not believe animals/pets would be insured.

i think this was one of the other insurance companies listed on another forum. "pet plan breeder ins" you could try them. they are UK based but serve the USA. i don't know very much about their policies and what they cover. There is also insurance for animals like horses yes, but they are also not considered an exotic pet. so i would just look around. may or may not be possible i don't know. what i do know is home ins etc will not cover pets like nadine is looking for.

Contact Kylah. She knows how to do this. Her sn here is kyro298....I think...not sure about the numbers. But you should be able to do a search for her. Yes your gliders CAN be added as they are personal property in the eyes of the law, same as if you had an expensive jewelry set.

You could be setting yourself up for a huge increase in your homeowner's insurance trying to add your gliders as personal property. Homeowner's insurance does not cover other 'pets' but if you are going to claim them as 'assets' for their value for breeding purposes, your insurance may want more information about your use of your home as a business.

You would probably have no trouble insuring them if you incorporated and purchased a commercial policy covering the gliders as business assets. Either way, the cost of a policy insuring the lives of your gliders could be very costly.

What if you didn't tell them they were being bred? Just add them as property like you would if you had expensive jewelry or something? I personally refuse to work with state farm anymore because my husband's truck got broke into and a whole case of cd's were stolen along with his watch and they refused to cover it. So we now use USAA. I have thought about adding my gliders as personal property. Ill let y'all know what they say when I call them.

I must weigh in here. I am a licensed Insurance agent in Indiana & have been for 15 years & own an Insurance Agency with my family. The first thing you have to understand about insurance is it is regulated by the state that you live in. In fact, there are only a couple insurance companies in the U.S. that operate in every state so what may work for a person in Ohio may not work here in Indiana. The second thing is just because by law your pets are considered your personal property(which technically is true) does not mean your homeowners insurance has to cover them. In fact, live animals are absolutely EXCLUDED on the property section of your homeowners insurance policy & cannot be added. You can however add a floater or "schedule" to cover the value of all of your cages, wheels, & other accessories, but it is not cheap. Usually $3-$5 per $100 of value. The other problem is by doing this you are informing your agent that you are running a business from your home which can raise your homeowners insurance rate by double or triple. You could probably by a commercial insurance policy(bop or business owners policy) to cover the value of the animals &accessories. The base rate for a BOP starts at $500-$1,000 per year & that's just the liability portion of the policy(which you do not need). To add the animals to that policy would make your rate, well let's just say not worth it and you would have to pay that rate every year. You could probably find somewhere on the internet a pet health insurance company to cover them if they got sick, but most of those are a joke & not worth the $. I highly doubt you will find a reputable company to pay you a replacement value on gliders. Yes you can buy such a policy on horses of high values from specialty companies, but there are alot of horses out there for the companies to spread the risk out. Also, those horses have to be branded a easily recognizeable & usually have a specialty micro chip implanted so the insurance company can easily distinguish one horse from another. Gliders arent big enough to implant & would be very hard for an insurance company to tell apart. Most importantly, gliders individually dont cost enough to warrant insurance which is another reason why companies dont offer to insure them. You would have to have a whole lot of gliders to have this concern at which point the business policy might not be a bad idea. It wouldnt be worth the money to insure 6 or less gliders there just wouldnt be enough value to justify the expense. I personally wouldnt insure pet gliders. The money cant really replace your pet. I will do some research at the office on Monday & see what I can turn up.

I did a little checking at work today. Im an independent agent so I represent 53 of the 401 total insurance companies that sell property insurance in the state of IN. Out of all 53 I have 1 company that has any pet reimbursement coverage. It costs $5 a year per pet(up to 2 pets per household) & covers up to $200 per pet in the event of fire, theft, wind, or collapse. So basically if I had my house insurance with this company I could pay $10 extra per year for my house insurance & that would cover Baggie & Mucee(my 2 gliders). In the event of a loss(say fire) & Baggie & Mucee die, I would have to have a letter or receipt from the store or breeder I bought them from(in my case Peggy) stating their replacement value. Both of mine would exceed the $200 each so I'd get a check for $400. Again this isnt worth it, but Im suprised that i found this. The kicker is, this company's homeowners rates are so high, you would lose $ because you wouyld pay well over the $400 per year to get your home covered with this company. I did find out that on show & race horses they take DNA at the inception of the policy for identification purposes & all horses of $10,000 value & higher are implanted with a gps tracker by the insurance company.
I did find a pet health insurance company that will write vet coverage on sugar gliders. They only sell in 6 midwest states with IN being 1 of them. Im not sure of the cost because i wouldn't be interested. I would much rather pay as I go if I ever need it.

I'm really sorry I hadn't seen this thread until now. For the record, we are in Colorado and as stated, all companies and states will vary. Our particular company is American National Insurance. Here's the thread with the info I received from our underwriter at my husband's company a while back:
