Oh Elaina, I didn't expect this update. Poor baby back in that terrible collar...sigh. I'm sorry. I'll be continuing my prayers for Chuckles.

One step forward, 2 steps back....cha cha cha This is NOT a fun dance for either of you, I know. (Knocking very very hard on wood) I've been doing the same dance with Minka since early August with a mating wound. I finally resorted to taking her to the vet & saying "all right, I've had enough & I need YOU to help me"...as of today, there's a very small, skinny scab (for GOOD this time, please ) on her shoulder. Elena, I seriously and honestly wish that an emergency jacket would work in this situation.....but I know it won't UNLESS I'm misreading and Chuckles has nothing more than a stub for a tail. I'll just keep sending hopeful and positive thoughts to you both & wait for updates as they come.

Chuckles Update: I can't even tell you all how MAD he is at me! He refuses to eat or drink if it is offered by me. I've had to get Chuck involved because the little stinker will eat and drink for him. I'm glad that he is but man it hurts my heart that he thinks I'm just doing this to be mean or something. He refuses to even look at me and turns away if he even hears my voice. But he'll soon learn that he has to deal with me cause I'm not backing off. This morning I got a real good look at his tip and he did mangae to groom it until the tip of the bone was exposed. Just by having him back in the collar overnight the wound is again starting to close over the bone. Another complication tho cause when I checked his shoulders one side is again looking a little matted. And this is with extra mole foam being added to the edge that touches his neck. So I'll be keeping a very close eye on it and keeping it and his tail covered in Vetericyn. Sadly that's all I can do because I know if I take off the collar again he'll just head back to his tail and make it worse. Denise sadly the ejacket won't work as he still has enough of a tail to do it damange if not in a shot glass style ecollar. He and I are in the collar for the long haul and we will both make it thru this.

Elasticon is a very sticky adhesive bandage that is like an ace bandage with sticky on one side. You can use it to hold the straw on the tail.
I would not close up the end of it, that would allow air to get in.

I'm also on the team of "not fond of straws" for tail issues...ANYWHERE on a tail. OK, so you leave the end open so the tip can heal and so forth.....but what's going to stop trapped moisture from becoming an issue halfway up the tail? Uh uh, just not a fan of something that has been tried and ended up in a MISERABLE failure.
And the idea of attaching a splint TO the e-jacket just can't work....the e-jacket ends at mid-body about where his pom would be anatomically....and the back legs would be restricted no matter what. The "committee" in my head says the splint concept might have a chance of working....let me throw out their thought: popsicle sticks on either side of the tail with moleskin (or molefoam?) to cushion the insides...with a thin layer of Vetwrap covering the whole contraption. Hmmmmmmmm......
Are you following my thoughts, Elena?

In theory LOTS of things work.....in practical application, well things just don't turn out as well. There's only ONE WAY to find out for sure....and that's to give it a test run around the block. In my head, the splint WILL NOT work until his upper body is restricted. So.....I'll ask you to take a measurement for me. Get a piece of string and put it around his chest under his front arms...then make a knot & slide it off of him. Put your index/middle/ring fingers in that loop & tell me how many comfortably fit in that loop (if you need to include your pinky finger too, that's fine).
You still have my cell phone number (I hope).....if you don't, I'll check back in a little while for your answer.

Oh....easier way to measure....make a slip knot, put a big loop over the way Denise described, tighten to where it needs to be, then mark that spot on the string with a marker, then you can loosen it back up to get it off. Then slide the knot back where you need to be. That way the knot is already in it, you're not trying to tie it on a wiggly glider.

Chuckles Update: Well Chuckles is still very upset with me but he'll at least take a few licks of the food I offer him. I have Chuck doing most of the feeding because Chuckles will eat more for him. Guess this is just Chuckles way of showing me he's really upset at me because I put the ecollar back on him. Makes me sad that he is behaving this way and I wonder what this is goin to do to the bond he and I shared. But the news doesn't stop there. Chuckles does have a small sore on his shoulder again from the ecollar. Worst part is I can't take off the ecollar yet because the skin on the tip of his tail is receding and the bone is sticking out. Call the vet as soon as they opened this morning and we are headed over to Quincy tomorrow. I'm snowed in today or I'd be headed out there today

Hang on, help is on its way... there's an envelope coming your direction as fast as the Post Office can get it there (which is DISGUSTINGLY SLOW in my books ). Sent you a PM with more details. I can't do a thing about you being snowed in (it's falling pretty good here, too, right now) but I can tell you that I'm with you in spirit. And Chuckles will forget all the "torture" you're doing on him right now...eventually. But you don't give in ONE IOTA, momma sometimes has to dish out some tough love and this is your day to do it.

Thanks for your support everyone and hugs I soooo needed them! With your help Chuckles and I will hang in there until this is all over. I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place and am having to weigh the lesser of 2 evils. I know having the ecollar on him will continue to make the sore bigger. But on the other hand if I take it off he'll go for his tail which now has the skin receding and a bone sticking out. So taking it off just is not an option. I called and talked to my vet today and she told me to keep it on until I can get into see her tomorrow (I'm snowed in or you know I'd be headed out to her now). She did tell me that it's likely that she'll have to take off more of his tail and so we'll need to stitch it again. So we'll still need him to be in an ecollar after that. She said we can treat the sore on his shoulder while he's still in the ecollar and work more on it after we finally get him out of it if need be. She feels the sore is not the biggest issue at the moment his tail is.

Guess this is just Chuckles way of showing me he's really upset at me because I put the ecollar back on him. Makes me sad that he is behaving this way and I wonder what this is goin to do to the bond he and I shared. It may strengthen it, you know. When Foehn tore off a nail a month after we got her, we of course were worried sick. My wife held her for hours so he wouldn't climb or injure herself further. In the end all was OK, but Foehn really seemed to know that she was being cared for and we think that strengthened the developing bond. Chuckles' situation is more traumatic, of course, but I bet he knows that you are taking care of him, even though he may be upset with you at times. Good luck!
