I have had my sugar glider for a little over a year now and I'm thinking about building a cage for him and was wondering what some of your opinions are and how in the world I can build one like the supplies and instructions. Thank you.

There are several people here on GC that have built their own cages and love them! I think it's both a matter of personal preference AND your gliders behavior. If you have chewers...then regular cages would probably be a better bet. But if not..then I think you can do pretty much anything!

Here's one link for you that I know of. I'm sure others will chime in, as well!

If you go to the website justforfuzzies.com then click on OTHER, you will find a wonderful PVC cage with step my step instructions with pictures, also has a list of supplies you will need. Many of us here have this cage, including me, as it is very popular with suggie owners. Good luck!!

If you do build your own cage its so rewarding.BUT get a good pair of plyers! It will save your fingers when your fussing with hundreds of zip ties. Also watch the clasps for the doors the eye hooks are easy to escape from.
Heres a pict of my cage, and yes I used the just for fuzzies lay out with a few tweaks of our own.

What do you recommend for securing the doors better to prevent escapes? I am thinking about building my own cage too but I was worried about making the doors secure enough.

Also, how much does it cost to build the homemade cage from justforfuzzies?

Nice cage GeorgiaandDonald. I have one sugar glider and I know the cage I have know is big enough for him but I just want him to have a bigger one so I can put more toys in there.

I literally just finished my cage tonight from this design.

http://www.glidercentral.net/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/topics/935221/How_To_Sugar_Glider_PVC_Cage

Using pliers for all the zip ties would have saved my hands frown
It's a good looking cage and probable cost me under $50, but took my like 6 hours to cut the pvc, cement it together (optional I know but I'm gonna have to carry it outside to clean every week), netting wasn't all the easy either. You gotta prune away any little sharp bits.

I make things all the time so this wasn't that frustrating but could be difficult for a beginner. I used the thin wall pvc because its lighter and still plenty strong.

It cost me around 130- 150 to build, but keep in mind I have black PVC not white theres about a $2.00 per stick difference, we also used the non zink screws n washers, along with a rope light for the top, and I used special zipties inside the cage for toy hangers. There zip ties that have a round circle on the head of the zip tie, thoes run about $5 a bag. I have seen some build there cage for $75 or so. But for me the extra expence for this cage and its size was so worth it. I have yet to see a cage on the market I like as much as I do this one. Plus were planning an add on to this cage soon! Ya cant do many upgrades to a standard metal cage..lol.
As for securing the cages I used 2 eye holes (not the latch side) and a clip that looks like a question mark, it has a lil lever that you slide down and it closes it..if you zoom in on the photo of my cage you can see one on the bottom door. I dunno what its called. Sorry but this sustem works great!!!

I recently built a 4'x2'x4' cage from pvc. It cost me about $80 for everything. If you want specifics just send me a tab. I built mine as separate panels so that if I move or need ot take them somewhere I can take it apart easily.

I was also thinking about building a reptarium like one that Sugar_Mama made in housing 101 but the only problem with that is I would love probably 2 shelves in it.

When making a cage what size PVC do you use I was looking at Lowes website and they have some that are 1/2"X10' and such...which kind should I get?

Im wanting to build a PVC cage from justforfuzzies.com but Im trying to think of a way to build shelves for it so I can put food dishes at different levels and so I could put their box up higher. I have thought of a few ways but nothing that I think would be real sturdy.

Shelby...think about the pvc coated shelving you would use for closets and such. It would have a stand, and you could turn the shelf upside down so it had a lip on it, as well. Just a thought. dunno

1/2"x 10' is just what youre looking for, though i used the 1/2"x5' cos I have a small car tounge
i would go into the store and compare the 1/2 and the 3/4. i considered using the 3/4 because i figured it'd be sturdier, but we didnt have the extra money at the time.

You should also figure out what connectors you will need- if you get bigger than half inch PVC you'll need to make sure you can easily get connectors to fit it. We special ordered some online when we built our cage, but our cage includes a stand for the poop tray..

Here are some pictures of mine. I meant to post them but I forgot where I put my camera... it was on the tripod tounge

My little guys love it. I still need to fill it out with toys, but it's easily 4 times the size of their old cage.
