Legal or Illegal... TODAY 1/25/11 they are Illegal!!!!!!

So there are numerous vets in PA that will treat sugar gliders.... and they say they don't have to report their care smile

They also say that the law changes ALL THE TIME... I seem to recall in 2008 I asked about the law and it was only illegal to buy and sell in the state of PA but ownership was permitted... now in 2011 they are completely illegal.. as of today, remember it is always changing. I am still waiting for a phone call back from the dept of agriculuture, animal health department. We shall see what that man has to say.

But for all you PA live ins or wanna move ins... be careful, as the law changes all the time.... do not advertise you have gliders and find a vey that is comfortable treating the patient no matter what!!!

ARRGGHH!!! to PA STATE

Until someone gets a permit (is actually holding it in their hand) everyone can assume that gliders will continue to be illegal. No matter what someone says (depending on the day) at the dept of ag, it is on the books that one must have a permit. For several years, they were telling people, 'sure it's legal...with a permit'. But no one could get one, so no matter what they say, without a permit signed by the right people, you can't legally own one in the state. The only change worth paying attention to is that they no longer require a permit to own one legally (or start giving out permits again). ohwell

As long as U don't breed - you're ok owning 1 or 2 gliders - I just wouldn't go around advertising it - One nasty AG could stir things up n come and take your kiddos - That's one of the reasons I moved with my daughter to Illinois - We found a really nice vet that looked at all my Gliders 11 in all - gave them all a good bill of health and off we went -

I disagree with "as long as you don't breed, you're okay owning 1 or 2 gliders" (in an illegal state). You might be more likely to get caught if you have a lot of gliders, and are breeding them, but this doesn't mean you won't/can't get caught with just one or two. And, should you get caught, the gliders will likely pay the price.

So how can we as a community get the state to accept gliders as a pet (solely, non-breeding)?

-just fyi I am not in the state, used to be, may move in the future smirk

how can they put them down like that, that is a very inhuman way to die... how is PETA not all over that!!!!????

That just doesn't sound right, then why not just shoot or hang dogs or cats and save the money it costs to uthenize them??? (not that I agree to do it that way, it just sounds as ridiculous and painful as drowning) The burning part is a typical removal of deceased animals.

If there is proof that it is done this way then this could be one strong reason to get the law changed so that they could be permitted as pets or at least to get enough signatures

No offense to anyone involved in PETA but it seems like Dogs and cats are bigger news stories. I mean so what if someone gets rid of a few "rodents or reptiles" , even though gliders are NOT rodents they are not big news either. I tried contacting a PETA group about reptiles being treated horribly. I was told that they really wasnt much that could be done. I also dont understand why gliders would be illegal in a state where they really probably couldnt get loose, breed and ruin the eco system but laws r laws no matter how silly they seem , I guess

Whether PETA cares or not the treatment is very wrong...
As for the legality of gliders in PA... I contacted the Gaming Commission of PA and very promptly answered "Can you have sugar gliders in the state of PA?" "NOPE, they are illegal".. "no permits or anything or issued either?" "Nope, they are illegal"

I think some of their reasoning is that they are closely "related" to flying squirrels. (Just because they have the same membrane, IDK?) SO for all the people that would let them into the wild because they no longer want to care for them (sadly people do this all too often, big reason for so many limits in NYC) I think the Gaming Commission thinks that Sugar Gliders will harm the native wild animal to PA the flying squirrel.

I think it needs to be disproven somehow,
any suggestions?

I don't know anything about the flying squirrel really. I would think though, that gliders would have a different food source in general. Maybe? I don't know. If they have different food sources though, then they aren't in direct competition there. That just leaves habitat then, which is shrinking down for every species.

I believe that the flying squirrel eats just like the reg. squirrel.. not like a sugar glider at all. I am going to find out more information.
I am going to call back and ask about all the suggie owners that had gliders before the law change to illegal, what of their beloved pets then?
Also ask if they have an answer as to why they are illegal? what is the reasoning?

keep yall posted LOL wink

I know someone on FA who is having to re-home her 3 gliders because they're illegal in PA now. She has found a potential family, but they're 9 and a half hours away. I referred her here to look for a railroad, but it's so sad.

It's a lot easier to pass legislation banning a pet when one person makes a stink than it is to keep them legal. The people making the rules really don't care one way or another, because it doesn't concern them or anyone they know. It's a lot easier to just give the angry person spearheading the movement what she demands and to lay down the banhammer.

After all, we don't often petition to KEEP things legal... we only wind up having to fight for it after someone takes the first step and wants to make something illegal.

The girl on FA said that the PA example was because an "angry soccer mom" thought they could spread monkey flu and she threw up a stink or something, so they were banned. That may be just hearsay, but it would not surprise me one bit if it were true.

You may try getting enough people in PA to email or write to your congressman. This tends to work a bit better during election years.......funny how people listen a bit better when they may have something to loose or gain. If enough potential voters voice their opinion on the law then maybe it has a chance of being over turned. You are probably facing an uphill battle but it may be a battle worth fighting.
