So first things first, I am in Georgia and my gliders were givin to me in August of 2010. Since becoming a member of this website I have come to learn that gliders are illegal in some states. I have researched Georgia Department of Natural Resources and this it what is says: "Sugar gliders are legal as pets if the owner possesses valid documentation that the animal originated from a source inspected and regulated by the United States Department of Agriculture." I have NO idea where the sugar gliders came from before they were givin to my husbands brother and then to us. I just want them to have a FOREVER home and don't know what to do! Any advice will help at this point..

Is there any way you can back track and find the original owner? Can you talk to your husnands brother and ask where he got them...any information he can give you can help in locating the original owners.
I am sorry your going through this.

Hey there! I'm from GA too, Augusta area. Unfortunately, You are not "legally" allowed to keep them unless you have that USDA document in your hands. Which means we can't rescue gliders in-state either. If you don't have the paperwork then they have the right to take them.It is a really really lame rule. Have you taken them to a vet? (I think you may have issues with is) Personally, I would try to track the owners down and see how far you can get. There really is not much more you can do than that. Maybe you could contact DNR. But chances are if you do that, then they will tell you to get it across state lines. Again your main concern is the availability of emergency/ vet care. Best of Luck! Let me know if I can help you out with something!

I thought about trying to backtrack and see where they came from but these are the joeys that came off of my brother in laws gliders. Does that make a difference? I also thought about trying to get a clean bill of health or something so maybe if in the future I ever had problems I could say well, there is nothing wrong with them you know?

Are you saying that the gliders you have are the joeys of your brother's breeding pair? Need you to give us a bit more info so we can help you.

Okay I will start from the very start lol, I know I can be confusing when I get upset! Sometime in early 2010 my brother-in-laws friend gave him the 2 glider a male and female. We know who my brother-in-law got them from but are lost after that. Anyways, while my brother-in-law had them they had 2 joeys which he gave to us. And so we hve Gimli and Boo. My brother-in-law is not a licensed USDA breeder though. So I don't know where to go from here..Sorry, I know it's still a little confusing/ story of my life!

Okay what you are going to want to do is call your local USDA office and explain it just like that. As in order to be USDA Lic he has to have 3 or more breeding pairs, which cleary your BIL doesnt have also did you pay him anything for them? See here in KS if that had happened it would be no big deal I know that GA is a bit more so that is what I suggest you do. Do you know if the pair your brother got are from a USDA Lic breeder?

We didn't pay anything at all. He just gave them to us. I'm not sure if they are USDA lic. or not. But I am trying to find out right now as we speak. Which is turning out to be a bit difficult. Do you know if there a local USDA office here in GA or do I have to call the one in NC? Thank you so much for your help!

Give me just a second and I will double check for you. Okay the number you want to call is 919-855-7100 this is the Eastern branch and they will be able to help you with this. Also even if you don't know if the person is lic as long as your brother has their name the USDA can run a check and see if they are lic. Will be keeping my fingers crossed for you!!!

I found out that the guy that originally owned them got them in FL. Im just trying to find out the name of the place now. So i guess my only problem is now that my gliders are joeys off of the ones purchased in FL. Will this matter?

I don't know those are questions you will have to ask the USDA and GA Fish and Wildlife group. I wish I could give you more help but truthfully those are the two you need to talk with. Make sure to get everything wrote down if they will send you something in writing great. If not make sure you write down who you talked to, what time it was, what number you called, their extension if you have it.

The USDA has date of acquisition paperwork (I may be using the wrong term so I apologize if I am) but basically, if you go to the website, print the form, you can enter the information you have from the breeder that sold to your BIL's friend, the transfer to your BIL, then another form for the birth of the joeys, etc, creating a paper trail from them to you. Then, if the USDA does come knock on your door, they are going to see that you've got paperwork of the source of the gliders. Your other option would be to get them out of the state into a USDA licensed breeder or rescue home and that home would know the paperwork you would need to get the gliders back into the state legally. It boils down to the paperwork.

Jessica, just creating a paper trail does not satisfy GA requirements. The date of acquisition paperwork still has to be filled out by someone with a USDA license number. However, getting them to a USDA licensed breeder/broker and then having them create the paper trail needed is a possibility.

Thanks for the clarification Dancing! I thought if there was enough paperwork from the original USDA breeder that would be enough but you're right, it has to START with them, not just go backwards to them....otherwise we'd have a lot of joeys getting attributed to a lot more breeders, right?!
