To make a long story short - Originally my ex and I had 4 gliders. Upon breaking up we split them - I took two.

This weekend I picked up my ex'es 2 (Baldric and Brooklyn)- a year and a half after the split. The male was neutered on Friday so of course I had him on me and was watching him very very closely. The two new (but not really new) ones have been getting a lot more attention because they're scared and I haven't really seen them in a year and a half... yeah.. I guess I haven't been a very fair glider mom. frown

Bijou is my BABY! She's almost 2 years old and might have bitten me a VERY few times the first week after I got her. She was 8 weeks out of pouch and bonded VERY well to me.

This morning I was cleaning cages and when I was finished I took Bijou and Bugsy's sleeping pouch out with both of them in it. Bijou came out and latched on to my thumb and would NOT let go. She split my thumb wide open and her face was covered in blood. It's unbelievable how deep this wound is!

I am heartbroken! She's never ever drawn blood before and hasn't bitten me in nearly 2 years! When she stopped she looked almost sorry. She let me wipe the blood off of her with a damp paper towel. Maybe she realized how upset it made me because now she's being her usual sweet self.

Anyway - I'm just venting. Tonight Bijou is getting A LOT of mommy time. How angry she must have been to do that!

In the meantime... it's STILL bleeding (and I am still sniffling), 45 minutes later!

Could it just have been a fluke and she just mistook your finger as prey, perhaps just coming out of a deep sleep?

Happy Valentines Day right??

wink

I doubt it.. she totally knew it was me when I was trying to get her jaw open to get my thumb out of it and trying to unball her from around my thumb to get her back in the pouch.

I was cleaning ball pit balls earlier, so my hands probably smelled a bit like bleach and vinegar, but no... she knew it was me.

She was just mad. VERY mad.

I guess I should be grateful that it was me she bit into and that the newbies are in quarantine so she can't get ahold of them for another 26 days. I'm thinking introductions will have to be handled VERY carefully!

Did you smell like the other gliders, perhaps?

Possibly...

I had just finished wiping cages and walls down. Then I removed all the 'hard toys' and soaked them in bleach/vinegar water, and put all the fleece in the washer except the pouches they were sleeping in.

If I smelled like anything I'd say it would have had to be bleach and vinegar. I suppose there could have been a remainder of 'strange glider scent' clinging to me somehow.

The male that was neutered on Friday has a VERY strong scent. I'll be glad when that goes away!

I have had something like this happen with my glider Paisley. She put 2 puncture wounds & bruises on my leg. She smelled on my fleece pants where my other glider Sophie had set & ate mealies. This set Paisley off beyond belief. I was heartbroken too.
This may have happened because she smelled another glider on you?

Awe just reading that makes me pout. I've been bitten really really hard before by one of my girls. Of course, the non-nippy one. It was hard to get it to stop bleeding, several hours even. I ended up putting a pressure bandage on the bite (a ball of tissue on puncture and bandaide over it).
I think it hurt my feeling more than my finger. Just the other day she did it again, now I have nerve damage on the tip of my pinky finger. She was on that last knuckle and would not let go - the psst didn't work and I had to "blow" her off. I'm hoping with a litte time the tingling and numbness will dissipate and my finger will be back to normal. I think Izzy is entering her "terrible twos" or rebelious teenager years.

I'm sorry that happened to you, that must have been upsetting frown...remember that gliders' nosesm and sense of smell are amazingly sensitive so all it could have taken was one small whiff of another glider on you and boom, it could have set her off. You're still a wonderful glider mommy, especially since she's back to being her sweet self smile
