I have a trio. One girl was 8 wks oop and the other was 12 wks oop when I got them. They are now approx 7 & 8 months old (the other glider in the trio is a male he's about 6months old).

The younger of the two girls, Sookie, recently went to the vet b/c she had a puffy/swollen face and some bite marks on her nose. At first we all thought she had an abscess but the vet could not find one once he sedated and examined her. So we were left to assume that somehow she got hurt and it got infected and the other two were 'over grooming' her, being a little TOO helpful! And that is where the puncture wounds came from on her nose.

Sookie has been seperated and on meds for two weeks now. She is now done with her meds and looks like herself again. So I figured she could go back with the others now. Poor little girl has been in a smaller cage all alone.
As soon as I put her in there, she went straight to the pouch with the other two, dove right in. I thought, 'yay, she's happy now.' UNTIL..the crabbing and hissing began. All three ran out of the pouch and then Sookie was just sitting in the bottom of the cage, I was standing there, thinking 'what the heck..' and Piper, the older female, jumped ontop of Sookie and they started fighting!! i had to get Sookie out!!!

The male is fine with her, he loves both of the girls.
I don't understand why they're fighting! They've been together for a long time!! They've only been seperated for about two weeks. I wouldnt have even believed they were fighting if I didnt witness it!! frown

I tried getting in the tent with all three of them and Piper chased Sookie and jumped on her again. So that did not work...

I don't know what to do...Any advice or suggestions as to what could be causing this behavior? I've never experienced this before. And Piper is such a sweetheart to me...I just don't understand...

Hey Nicole! I'm sorry you're dealing with this. frown sounds as if you just need to do a small re-intro...not a big deal and it shouldn't take long. Gliders are funny that way and she's been out of the cage just long enough that they aren't quite sure about taking her back.

Do tent time...take them in and bring loads of treats. When they get near one another (ANY of them), treat treat treat...if they sniff each other...treat treat treat...if they groom one another...treat treat treat...and so on and so forth. Show them that by accepting the other, it's a happy thing and they get a yummy treat for it! Also..have a pouch handy, a CLEAN pouch, with no one's smell on it. Back to basics here...you're kind of starting with a clean slate. They may chase one another, they may make noise...this is all normal. They may even wrestle a bit...there IS a difference between vying for position and fighting/balling up so pay attention to that. Obviously you don't want to let any fight go for long, but if they begin the wrestling, make a loud noise or wave a piece of fleece over them. If they separate and run, they were not "balling up" - only exerting their dominance over the other one. Although you don't want to let this arguing go on for a long time, it IS okay to let it happen a few times because it's their way of making things right between them all.

Bear in mind that it may not happen right away, but once they seem to be doing okay - checking each other out again, etc. - introduce the clean pouch in the middle of the tent. Again, loads of treats. If one goes in, treat. If another goes to the mouth of the pouch, treat...you get the picture.

Good luck!

Thank you Aimee.
Based on what you've said, I believe they're wrestling because they roll around for a second and then they seperate and run. Sookie will continue to approach Piper over and over and every time Piper will hiss and chase her or jump on her, then Sookie will run. My boy, Ozzy, goes right to Sookie and starts licking her, she started climbing under him and they had their tails wrapped together, like holding hands..it was too cute.
I will keep trying.

Thanks again.

You're welcome. Yep...sounds like they're just getting to know one another again and trying to establish some boundaries with this forgotten newbie. smile Continue to work on it and let them have time together. My guess is that they'll accept her before long and everything will be as it was. smile

I hope everything goes well for you...I know it's hard to be patient because you just want them to be one big loving family again, I would feel the same exact way...keep at it, I definitely don't think this is a situation where you're going to end up with incompatible gliders at the end....I think they're just figuring out the dynamics again....keep us updated!

What you are experiencing is not unheard of, and a simple re- intro like Aimee suggested should do the trick.

One thing I would like to add here is to keep in mind that whenever you have to separate a glider due to illness or injury, you can allow supervised playtime every night as long as the illness is not contagious. This usually helps preventing re-intro's being necessary.

Unfortunately trios with females that are not sisters have a much harder time of working out. People tend to worry about intact males together, but they don't think about two females together with a male (neutered or intact). I've found that my females can be as aggressive as my males towards each other. In fact, I had to re-arrange my cages because my trio sisters were throwing a fit about Mausi (who was single at the time) being near their "territory".

You can always try to re-introduce everyone (it might be better to introduce the girls without the male around at first) but make sure that you're prepared to keep them separate.

Good luck!

I tried tent time with just the girls last night and at first I thought we were actually getting somewhere. Sookie was in the pouch and Piper ran in there. There was some crabbing and hissing, but it stopped pretty quickly and they were just sitting there next to each other, doing nothing. I gave each of them a couple of treats and everything was great until Sookie darted out of the pouch and then Piper came out too. That's when the chasing began. After that it was right back to the chasing, wrestling chasing routine we've had EVERY night for what, the last 4 nights, i've lost count...

Sookie is also biting like crazy. She's always been a little nippy at times with me, but now she's biting me for no reason, ALL THE TIME. She approaches me, sniffs my hand, and bites me! She was sitting on my shoulder and bit me in the side of the neck!! IT HURT. She left a red mark, but didnt break the skin. She's gotten terrible lately. I can't hold her at all! frown

grrr, it's so frustrating. But as Dory would say, "Just keep swimming, just keep swimming, swimming, swimming."
So I will keep trying, trying, trying...I just needed to vent.

You're getting there, Nicole, but I understand your frustration completely! Bandit was like this with Penny....he was just NOT going to let anyone come between him and Mommy. sounds to me like Sookie is being a little protective and is mad at you. That's okay, she'll come around. In the scheme of things, four or five nights isn't much at all so continue to be patient (I know, it's SO hard!!).

I have a suggestion. The cage that Piper is in - is it small enough to bring in the tent? If so, I suggest bringing it in the cage as it is - don't take anything out except the pouches. When you bring it in, leave the door open on it and hang the neutral pouch on the outside of the cage. Let the girls explore, but more importantly, let Sookie explore the cage and everything in it. Having Piper's scent in there may make her feel a bit more at ease and more in control. I did this with Penny's cage and it helped. Having the neutral pouch on the outside will allow them to crawl in if they want. Again, if they sniff it, treat. If they go in, treat. If they go in and stay, treat....and so on. Just another option to try for you as you go through this.

Thinking of you hug2

I am just curious, is your boy neutered? I didn't see either way when reading the thread.

I remember when Tara Saturngirl had to put her Sophie and Coopie back together, it took months, but the good news is that they are currently a happy couple again thumb
Good luck and keep at it smile
