Phillip is getting ready to sell this house since now he's pretty much going to be in NC for awhile and I won't be able to pay for this house by myself...

We had the realtor in yesterday to give us the suggestions needed to be done to put it on the market... we pretty much got really good reviews... but she said as soon as she walked in the door she smelled cat pee and then realized after she went downstiars it was the "caged animals"..... *sigh*

Now, I think she's being oversensitive and full of it and probably doesn't have more than a goldfish.... but nevertheless.. it's not going on the market until I correct the "issue" she has...

I already spot clean the cages daily, clean the trays as needed, sweep at least every other day, and do my rotation of cleaning so they don't overmark.... I think I do a pretty [censored] good job.. does anyone have any ideas.. do you think maybe a few air fresheners upstiars would help? Could I put anything downstiars (I already have an ionic breeze but that's all that is down there right now).. I would hate to spray febreeze every day down in the basement and hurt them...

I have to please the animal dislikers that may come through....

You could try placing open containers of baking soda in various places... just make sure the kids can't get a hold of it. Try air out the room as best you can. You can also sprinkle the baking soda on carpet (just like carpet freshners) and leave for an hour or so and them vaccume..this helps a lot

When you know someone is coming to look at the house throw a batch of cookies in the oven and switch the coffee machine on!

We won't always be home tho.. I work and he's not here... I'm sure some of the showings will be during the day or on the evenings I have class....

Their room isn't carpeted (b/c it locks in odor) but I will have to look into the baking soda thing...

When we sold our last home I would put some vanilla on a cookie sheet and turn the oven on LOW about 30 min before they came. It made the house smell wonderful.

Also, I've read that you can take bounce dryer sheets. Personally, I would run them through the dryer first so the gliders won't get sensory over load, but place them all around that room, hidden from view of course. If you have an air conditioner vent...a couple in there so when the air comes on so does the 'fresh' smell.....

Oh Tonia, you msut be so sad having ot move ) : Maybe you should try this part of Ohio for awhile. We could be partners in crime!
I've seen commercials for those air fresheners that send a puff out every however many minutes. Never had one but it would at least take care of itself when you were gone. I'm personally a big yankee candle fan. That's all you can smell even when you havent' lit them when they are still new... Concord Grape has a strong smell that should hide a lot. I seriosly doubt you have a odor issue but non glider people may smell it???

I'm not really that sad.. Not sure where I will be moving to yet, but this house is too big for me anyway LOL.

I bought some of the febreeze ones that have dual scents and they switch back and forth.. i put two upstairs and one on the very far end opposite corner of the gliders in the lower level... i can smell them instantly... hopefully that will make a difference.

you can smell the glider in their room b/c males that aren't fixed.. well sometimes can get a little mark crazy... but she said she smelled it when she opened the door and the gliders are on another level in another part of the house... i really think she didn't smell it then.. but when she saw them thought she'd say she smelled it right away.. but that's just me....

I love the air freshners that go automatically. You can get them at walmart. they are like 8 dollars. they smell great and the freshness lasts.

Anyone know if the febreeze air freshners taht you can set on low or high would be alright in the back corner of the sugar glider room? The room is the size of a bedroom and the three cages are against one of the walls.

I'm not sure about gliders, but I am getting an Eclectus Parrot so I've been doing TONS of research on birds. Birds are very sensitive to environmental conditions such as if you burn something or overheat something in a non-stick pan it can kill them or I've heard that air fresheners do the same thing. However, the makers of Febreze are VERY concerned about the safety of their product on animals. They have something on their web site about it. Anyhow, they've been doing studies of bird owners and have no documentable evidence that Febreze has harmed any birds. They are a great company and since reading how concerned they were about even the thought of their product harming an animal and what they're doing to research to make sure it does not happen, I will forever be a supporter of Febreze!!! I actually used to spray it directly on my dog. When Febreze first came out, the package even said you could spray it directly on your dogs, but they've since removed that I think. Anyhow, I think if you sprayed it on the carpet and curtains, etc., you'd be fine if you just did it lightly.

We have an eclectus too and I know febreeze spray is fine... I would assume the air freshner plugins they have (i have it set on low) are good too but i just wanted to know if anyone had any issues with them... i have one next to their room but was wondering if i could put it in their room.

I just went through this for the past 7mos . The only thing that worked was a total spray down outside with the hose (yes, I even did it in winter ) clean once a week, the trays cleaned daily, as well as a quick wipe down...even then, there were a *few* complaints. Thank goodness we are in our new home now and close on the old one later this month.
It wasn't any fun being a clean maniac 24/7...but ya gotta do what ya gotta do I guess .

so just double the amount of time i normally do everything LOL...

let me see if i have this right..
**hose down outside once a week
**clean trays daily and wipe down daily

i understand what you mean Karin.. i have asked friends that don't have animals if they smell anything and they have even told me no until they walk directly into that room in front of erwin's cage.. there is no way they are smelling it at our door which is up a floor on the other end of the house

I use these in my house. They really don't have to burn that long before they fill the house with the sent of your choice. It last for several hours and even when it is capped you can still smell it. Good luck selling the house.

Wow Carrie.. those are beautiful... not sure if Phillip wants to shell that out or not so we'll see how many issues people really have... like I said.. this is the first anyone has ever said the main floor smells like animal and I really think she's making it up but I'll do what I can.

Anyone want a one floor (with a finished basement as well) house in beautiful Goodyear Heights in Akron, OH?

Good thing is, if it doesn't sell by September, I am moving out anyway so we can fully clean and air out the place then.... but hopefully it will sell.

You could try boiling cloves in a little pot of water. the smell isn't overwhelming, but might help to cover up the glider's smell. it's rather pleasant, actually...

actaully- bake cinnamon sticks and cloves on low heat in the oven for 5-10 minutes before any showing- smells like apple pie was just made for several hours, and you can reuse the pieces over adn over.. and it doesn't smell like you were tyring to cover anything up...

Hmm, interesting post, since I am also a RealtorŪ, but that is PART of your Realtor's job... honestly, I suspect she is just full of it, because I have been to your house a handful of times, and I have not noticed anything like that. Granted, maybe on the outside, if neighborhood cats are prowling around, but inside, dear, I think you are "safe."

Now, what we do here (and you and I both have beautiful hardwood floors) is do a full washdown... John and I both swear by Clorox and damp mopping - gives the house that "old-fashioned clean." Speaking of which, it's time we washed down our walls, something we do every spring-cleaning (running late this year).

Pick up all loose clutter, and "de-personalize" the house as much as possible - you want any potential buyers to "see themselves" in your home... THEIR things... where they MIGHT be.

I am really surprised she didn't give you a "list of things to do" - I always have with my past clients. One thing that's kinda cool - and super easy to install, is the Airwick "sniffers", which are about $10 at Wal-mart... you can set them to spray every 9, 18, or 30 minute intervals. That should help. Stick to the "homey smells" mentioned above, although, here, I prefer lavendar ('cause I am so hyper, lol, it helps keep me calm).

Turn ALL the bright lights on, your prospective buyers will, and look for any flaws... anything that could draw attention to itself, and take corrective measures. Windows should be nice and clean - let in as much natural light as you can. Buyers (when I have been a buyer's agent) will look for reasons NOT to buy... get around this by showcasing all of the positives. If you have AC (can't remember), keep that running... nothing is more refreshing than a nice cool house on a hot summer day... wash down any doors, around light switches, and if you have a garbage disposal, chopping up and grinding lemons makes your kitchen smell nice!

If I can give you any other pointers, just let me know! Best of luck!

She said everything looks fine.. just keep tidy... I don't have time to do full wash down so I hoping it can wait til phil can help me wash walls.. i just don't have time.....

I can't take all the personal things out as we still live here but after the yard sale this weekend hopefully there will be a lot less... we pretty much have nothing but boxes in the two bedrooms so once those are moved they are easy to imagine.. the living room is pretty impersonal now too as is the living room and kitchen... my room is the only one that has junk.

thanks for the advice cyndi.. i ended up getting the febreeze noticables b/c they are save for the gliders and when i walked in from work yesterday afternoon the first thing i smelled was that awesome morning rain scent... it was nice... and i have to admit i think it's helping the gilder room too tho i am not the best one to judge that...

I did all that Cyndi, and it STILL took 7mos. to sell....everything but the lemons..didn't have a disposal at that house. The one good part is, most showings are when the glider's are sleeping, so they don't take the attention away from buyers looking at the house . Good luck wished in your selling and move!

We don't have a disposal or AC... I never wanted to put AC in and never got around to the other. We have a gorgeous old house in goodyear heights. Bad part is... the value of our house went down b/c the school levy failed and 200 employees are being let go and most of the programs cut to the point that the only sports left are VARSITY high school (no j.v., no freshman, no jr. high)... we have open enrollment and are really close to other suburbs.. but it stinks. We are willing to let it go for practically nothing which is a good thing.. I just hope it sells.

Thanks so much for all the advice everyone... Cyndi.. you gonna come clean my house this weekend? I heard you were stopping by to do that LOL

hahahahaha, who is that who is telling on me, I wonder? Could her name start with a "K"?

Actually, a lot depends on market conditions, T, and that can change at any moment. Your best best is to make sure your property is priced competitively. One of the questions I'd have asked your (ANY) listing agent is what her performance record is: a good agent would not hesitate to answer this question, and if s/he CAN NOT, I'd keep looking. When I was actively listing and selling (now, all I do is teach pre-licensing and continuing education courses for licensees who wish to maintain their licenses), my record was selling a home within 90 days at 96.7% of list price.

One thing that I did notice is "Price Reduction" in a home not too far from where you live (that could be for ANY reason, but it does make a prospective buyer wonder).

Your house always seemed cool to me - that's why I wasn't sure.

Property values fluctuate, sometimes a lot in a very short period of time. Once, within two months, we were talking about $20,000 - in just TWO MONTHS! Supply and demand.

Karin is right, showings, for the most part, are when gliders are sleeping. A few times, I had late showings, but those were rare. Evening, in a Realtor's life, is spent on contract negotiations... presenting offers, counter-offers... blah blah blah.

I think your house is fine, actually. I didn't see too many non-essential items (good thing I am not selling, lol, I have TONS of that kinda stuff).

Now, if "my maid" would get off her rear... I have some housework of my own, lol.

Aw, man, Tania...I'd LOVE to buy your house. Don't know where Goodyear Heights is, but I love Akron in general (as long as the neighborhoods are safe). Someday I hope to buy a house in Boston Heights/Sagamore Hills/Northfield. Someday...

Good luck with the sale!

Good luck! ours didn't sell because the market is SOO bad.. when it was on the market there was 16* the inventory to houses that sold in the busiest months of the year and there are 35% more houses and even fewer buyers this year and our view out the back sucks! and I didn't want the house for sale while we were dealing with the wedding this summer... or any of the other hassles involved..
