I have been using Lemongrass (dried) in the bottom of the trays in my glider cages for 2 years now as a natural room freshener. It is wonderful for "hiding" smells, and it also acts as a deterrent for any "pests" that may be in the house.

I have never seen any ill effects of using it.

Before I offered it to others, I did lots of reading on the internet and a few "natural healing" books. The books I read were about cats. As there are no natural healing books targeting sugar gliders. I used cats as the target animal for a number of reasons. 1. I have a cat that desperately needed natural healing. 2. unlike other domestic pets, cats are very sensitive to natural oils, and so I theorized that if it was safe for a cat's system, it may not be harmful to a glider's. Especially since we all commonly use euc with our gliders. And we know that euc is definitely toxic, and smells waaaayy stronger than lemongrass does.

Now I never suggest using lemon grass to feed to gliders.

Even though I searched and searched for information on the toxicity of lemon grass, on-line searches are not 100% thorough. Things are missed, not indexed by a search engine, overlooked, not available one day and are the next...

I had a member here inquire via PM about Lemongrass, and with any question that is posed to me, I go with what I "think" I know as well as do a new search to see if I can find/learn more. I did find some more info I didnt find last time.

So I want to share my PM response here to be "reviewed" on the forum buy our members. If most feel this is an unsafe product to use, I would want to know!

Here's my PM response:

I have not been able to find it on a sugar glider safe list, but it is listed as nontoxic for other animals. Found this in regards to cats http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_8014/is_20100118/ai_n48680200/

lemon grass info in general http://www.drugs.com/npp/lemongrass.html
http://www.helium.com/items/1507071-uses-for-lemongrass

I found one reference to the toxicity to small animals here: http://en.allexperts.com/q/Rabbits-703/mites-fleas-lemongrass.htm, but I believe this is in reference to the oil extract she asked about and not a dried product.

Many plants are considered safe, but the extracted oils are concentrated and wouldnt be safe for ingestion.

Keep in mind too that we use eucalyptus leaves in our cages which are highly toxic, many think they are using the euc as a food, but the gliders dont EAT the euc.

How is use the lemon grass is a very small handful sprinkled in the bottom tray, to help mask any odors. I would not intentionally try to FEED it to them.

Perhaps I should start a thread on it and see if we can gather more information?

What does the cumulative knowledge of our members think?

I am a horticulturalist and have been using fresh lemongrass and eucalyptus in my cages for my old and current gliders for a long time. It is totally safe, and is not at all related to the onion family which is not safe for gliders.
