Hello, I'm new. I tried breeding for the first time this spring and we have 2 little ones that were oop yesterday. One of them seems to have a birth defect on its back above the tail - a large bald spot that goes down into the skin - It seems the mother is rejecting this little one as it is in their pouch home but is making lots of noise. Also, mama comes out without this little one but not the other. so I'm wondering what to do. I'm not set up to wean the little one and I wonder if I should just let nature take it's course or try to save it??

Well the decission is yours. Me personally I try to save all the joeys unless they are badly deformed from parents who have already tried to reject them.

If the joey that is left in the pouch has a strong cry and is loud then he is getting plenty to eat, however if thye are leaving him for long periods and letting him get cold then that is not good.

It isn't all that normal for a momma to carry around her joeys, so the one that keeps coming out with her must be holding on tighter.

Where are you located. Perhaps there is someone near you that would be willing to take the injured joey and hand raise it?

Judge not until you have walked in their shoes and lived their lives. What you see online is only part of the story.

I could have missed the pain
But I'd of had to miss the dance

I live just outside Portland, OR. I would love it if there was someone available who could help. I don't have the resources at this time to handle it.
thank you,
Jason

I was just reading Sil's reply more closely. So perhaps the mother has not rejected this little one. She is not leaving the baby for long periods and she still licked his face after I examined him for a moment and put him back. I'm trying not to bother them for more than 2 minutes a day but still trying to keep tabs to make sure all is well. So I may be overacting a bit. I just felt alarmed and sad for the little one and in a little over my head. Thx for the many kind responses and I'm still open to connecting with someone who lives near me and has more expertise. For me, this raises the question of the value of any life whatever the person's or animal's needs are. thx again,
Jason

Glad to hear the baby is doing well. Make sure you check for any new marks on the baby. Also check and make sure the baby is always warm and has milk in it's belly . You can check that by holding him up and seeing if there's a little white spot in his belly I believe.

It is very easy to over react, I know I did the first few times I had joeys. The wound does concern me though. It is not normal for them to have open wounds on them.

I would read up on how to hand feed the joey just in case she is rejecting him and get prepaired. If you are unable/unwilling (not saying you are just stating my oppionion for others ) to save the lives of joeys I personally think you should get your male neutered so you don't have to deal with rejections any more.
