I just found out that my boyfriend has mono. Poor guy, he's just miserable. As a precaution I moved the gliders out of our bedroom last night and slept in the living room with them. They come with me to work, so I dont have to worry about them during the day. Do you think there is any chance my babies could catch this? It is generally contracted by sharing drinks or through mucous (the kissing is outdated). He doesn't prepare their food or anything, and I do all the playing with the girls, but I just want to make sure they are safe.

I would just use precautionairy measure such as washing hands frequently with anti bacterial soap and NO KISSING the gliders. While for the most part, the "kissing" part is outdated, the virus that causes mono is present in saliva so in theory, could be passed on to the gliders. Since they are so small, it would take a very little amount of bacteria/virus to cause problems for them. (this is going on the assumption that they could catch it, which I don't know if they can or not).
Since he doesn't have much contact with the girls so far, I would keep it that way until he is over this.

I could have missed the pain But I'd of had to miss the dance

Yea, I think we will just play it safe and keep the girls away from him. Luckily their cage rolls, so its easy to move it into the living room. Luckily I am able to keep them with me during the day. He actually ended up going to the ER his temperature is up to 104 poor baby. Luckily I am out of work in an hour and can go wait with him. He is waiting for them to start an IV to rehydrate him. I hope he doesn't have to be admitted. My Grandma lives near the hospital, so she is going to babysit the girls while I'm there. Luckily I just got their travel carrier and I bring it to work with me.

Well, keep in mind that Mono is in the Herpes family of viruses. Herpes is forever. This family of viral infections doesn't really ever go away, but remains in the host's cells lifelong. Chicken Pox, Herpes Simplex, Mono, the whole clan doesn't usually ever leave.
Shingles is late re-activation of childhood Chicken Pox. Herpes Simplex I and II come and go periodically with re-occurring blisters. And people with Mono shed active virus periodically throughout life - for years and years. That is why many people with Mono don't recall an exposure and where they caught it. The actual incubation period of a new infection is a long time, as well.
So, unless you want to dump the boyfriend, you are wasting your time to think you can avoid exposure. And the next boyfriend is likely a shedder as well.
But there is good news - this virus likes people and doesn't frequent other species much. But isolation won't work unless you isolate forever. And if you've ever had Mono, the likelihood is you already have shed virus and exposed them.

I read that if you have mono you will only have symptoms once and be a "carrier" forever. Thanks for the info schlep! Very interesting. I am still keeping the critters away while he is still so sick, I asked the doctor what he thought about it maybe getting to the critters, and he said he wouldn't worry about the mono, but sometimes a second infection can occur, and that is what you need to be on the watch for. I also posted on my chinchilla forum and some on there had had mono and also said keep an eye out for a bacterial infection as well. Right now it is okay, since I am the one doing all of the bonding and care with the suggies, he has not even gotten to hold them at all yet. I always have them on me. LOL
