I see all the time that cages should be taller than wider so gliders can glide. Well, I say that is nonsense. A glider can NOT glide in a 2 or 3 foot distance. They jump yes but they don't actually glide in such a small space. And they don't glide from the top of a cage to the bottom. At least I've NEVER seen them do it in 12 years.

While gliders prefer to be up higher, why do we keep telling people that taller is better? I would think that a cage that is 5 foot long, 2-3 foot deep and 3-4 feet tall (not counting any stands or table) would be better for the gliders and they would get more exersize in them (based on having a reptarium that was 5 foot long, 2 foot deep and 4 feet tall and set up on a table so the bottom of the rept was 36 inches off the floor). But even in the reptarium, they never glided IN the cage. So maybe people can explain to me WHY taller is better?

(I will agree that up off the ground and HIGHER is better)

No clue, I also wonder about cages that are crammed pack full of toys and cage sets and whatnot. I was going to even post a thread asking if there is such a thing as too many toys. wink

I think there is such a thing as too many toys in the cage at one time but no such thing as too many toys available to rotate in and out!

You know, T...you're right. I'm one that has told people that the taller the cage, the better they can glide and you're absolutely right, they really can't glide, all they can do is jump. I stand corrected. smile But...I will tell you that in my cage, which is MUCH taller than my other cage, my monkeys will utilize the entire height of the cage and will JUMP from top to bottom, something they never did in their other cage because it was much wider than it was tall. So...while they can't really glide, I do believe that at least with MY monkeys, they LOVE the height they have now. dunno

I think it depends on the glider, too. Some of my gliders will drop from the ceiling to the floor or jump from the sides to the floor. I absolutely agree that there isn't any gliding going on in their cages. If you get a 8-10 ft cage, maybe, but not in the cages most of us have.

I dropped by to see some cages sizes because I lost one out of the back of my truck on the way home from the car wash today. I couldn't find it so I am planning a Klubertans order.

The problem is I have 2x2x5 cages made of the heavey wire. With the shoulder problems I have been having I can't move cages alone any more. I also can not reach the back of the cages. I am thinking about going 18 inches deep and with light gauge wire. That will work for my pairs but thinking I need wider to make up for the depth with the trio.

Pulling my hair out any ideas?

Cyndie,
I have a 55x18x30 cage....more than enough space for them and I can easily reach the back of their cage...plus mine is lighter wire, so I can wheel it myself (I have Rheumatoid Arthritis so I know what you mean about joint issues like your shoulder...).

Just a wild guess on my part, I could be wrong, but I think the "taller is better" idea comes from deterring new owners from purchasing cages similar to this http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2753643

It's close to the most often recommended 2x2x3 but would it really suit a pair of gliders? Nope.

I agree with what Dancing posted above. What we did was to extend the feet of our two cages to make them stand higher. Our gliders barely ever go to the bottom of the cage anyway. They like playing at the top. They jump for sure, no gliding in the cage. That is what we have the glider room for LOL.

I have seen many many times my gliders gliding both across the cage and from the top to the bottom. Mine actually glide more top to bottom.... I swear it is a game.. the shimmy upside down across the top support bar get to the center and let go, flip over extend the membranes for the slow glide to the floor.... then run up the wall and repeat! its awesome to watch.

OMG - you lost a cage??? Melissa/ssdreamsicles made her first Klubertanz cage here last weekend. It's 16 gauge wire, 30" x 18" x 60" tall. I would suggest using the 14 gauge wire for the front panel to give more stability where the doors are cut out, but the rest is fine with the lighter gauge. I order the width wire for each panel because it is about the same price per ft, so ordered 30" wide and 18" wide for Melissa's cage. There are fewer cuts, and the edges are finished. I also bend the wire where possible instead of cutting to make it more stable.

That is one of the topics in Suncoast's newsletter this month. After reading it, I thought about all those cages packed with cage sets too. We think that the more toys we get them, the better but that might not be the case. I always try to keep an open area in the cage for my gliders to be able to move and jump around from toy to toy instead of just climbing and reaching out to get onto their toys.

CKB, my cages are 36 wide, 24 deep and 40 tall. (plus the stands they are on). I have up to 4 gliders in these cages and they do really well. (most have 2 gliders in them though, one has a single glider) They seem to do so much better in these than the standard 55" flight cages (30x18x55). They are more active in them and use more of the cage for playing.

I do have difficulty getting them outside sometimes as we have small interior doors here but it works, just have to be careful is all. For me, the important thing is to have wheels on the stands so they can be pushed, not carried outside.

The very real down side is winter time when I can't wash them outside and they are too big (to wide) to fit in my bath tub for cleaning.

If I were to make my own cages, I would definately make them where they fit in the tub! Maybe I need to remodel my bathroom and make either a big walk in shower or put in a much larger tub? Wonder if I can talk the hubby into it?

I'd have to agree with you smile my rept is 5ft 9in long, 2-3ft wide, and about 5ft tall. They enjoy the space and they'll jump and run around but I have yet to see them glide in it. As far as toys go I have their wheel, 2 foraging toys and 3 other toys plus a few spots I hang barrel of monkeys from. They also have a couple ledges that are part of the cage (one hanging from the top and the other holds the wheel. I also switch them out every so often. Like today I'll put their big almost blanket thing in there that has ties for rattles and stuff and a couple pouches on it since they haven't had it since last week.

Glad you brought this up! I was kind of confused about it myself.

For me, being someone who HAS one of the 30x18x55 cages, my gliders do just wonderfully in their cage. I agree Teresa that too many toys and clutter can prevent and restrict their movement a bit as you said in a previous post, but in terms of the dimensions and size, I think for two gliders, it's a great cage. Mine DO like to play on the floor alot, I find them running around on the bottom all the time, so for me, this is actually the IDEAL size cage for my gliders....

That does sound awesome to watch Janie!
How big is your cage? I am so curious about all this. It seemed most people were saying that there gliders dont glide in the cage... I was wondering when they did then? I know there is playtime or tent time but how long does that last? And if it is one of those small popup tents, how can they glide in there?

The ones in my avairies glide and they do it all the time. The cage is over 7 feet tall and 5 ft in diameter =)

Most also glide in the playroom too 12X15 room. The smaller cages only have room for them to jump but given the big cages they definately spread those membranes heheh

Gliding around here only happens OUTSIDE the cage. They will glide from person to person, or from the top of a curtain rod or shower door to me. In the cage, it is only jumping, even though my cages are all on the larger side (5-6 ft tall and 30"-36" wide, and minimum of 24" deep). The "magic" gliding number must be the 55" width of Janie's cage! That is HUGE!

There is actually 16% more room (in cubic inches) in Teresa's cage, which sounds like the Q16B, than the 30x18x55 flight cages due to the extra depth and width.

I am about to sell my largest cage, a Klubertanz 24"x36"x60", because it is TOO big. (How about that one, KB? grin) I have a trio in there that only utilizes about half of the space. All of my cages are on stands at least 18" tall.

Yes my ferrets and gliders have met. I was not at all pleased!!!! My ferrets are very good at opening locks, they little escape artists. I have had ferrets for well over 20 years and had 5 when suggies had come into my life 4 years ago. When these ferrets are no longer with us I will not be getting more. I love ferrets and will miss them but they are definately NOT compatible animals. We now ALWAYS keep their bedroom door closed.

When they escaped they went to the gliders cages immediately and luckily the gliders started screaming which woke my hubby and I up... we yelled and the ferrets scattered. The gliders were scared stiff in the center of the cage.... this was the only time I have ever been seriously bitten by a glider... I walked into the avairy to calm my male down and he attacked me.. tore a good long gash in my finger exposing bone!... it was totally my fault, I had locked the ferrets back up and then went to the gliders.... I should have washed and I should have known better....

Very sadly, Mikey found out the hard way about ferrets and gliders. He was at the SGGA and on the last day, called home to let them know his flight plans and found out that his ferret had killed one of his gliders. This was such a horrible end to a fantastic weekend for him.

It was a very hard lesson for all of us to witness. He had done all he could to prevent them from interacting but one escape was all it took.

I've had ferrets and gliders at the same time but NEVER let them come anywhere near each other. Ferrets are extreme preditors even though they seem to be so docile in nature.

Judge not until you have walked in their shoes and lived their lives. What you see online is only part of the story.

Lindsay,
yes, the 55 inches is the height of the cage...30 inches is the width and 18 inches is the depth...mine is just on wheels on the ground, not up on a stand or anything and mine love their cage...they use ALL of it, I hear and see them running around on the bottom all the time...if I had the room I would love to give them an aviary of some sort....ahhhhhh one day!!

Its more along the lines of what your glider likes. I know you probably wont get a few cages and try them out lol. My cage is one that I have made, It is 4ft long by 4ft tall and 2ft deep. So it is plenty big. As for having to many toys I would say no as long as there is enough room for them to glide back and forth at least a few ways.
