During playtime, my daughter had given Tira a treat, and a few seconds later Tira looked as if she was choking...and spit out a clear liquid. After I ran over to see her...she looked as if she was choking...again spit out a clear ball of fluid. Is this normal? Should I be concerned she is ill? or a choking episode?

Please help if you can!

Karin,

What kind of treat was it? Do you think maybe Tira was not throwing up or seizuring? How is Tira acting now? If she continues I suggest taking to the vet. Let us know your baby is doing. Hope it passed and was nothing serious.

Hey Karin,
I would assume that if she was choking that she would not be able to spit out anything, Cause her airway would have been restricted. Was she breathing alright after she spit ? It sounds to me like she was just having a hard time getting that treat down. I would just make sure she is eatin ok and that you give her plenty of fluids. If she continues to spit clear fluid, then I would take her to the vet asap

Hi, if it were me-being a total panic freak with a hyperactive sense of urgency this is what I would do...Go to www.gliderhealth.com
and call one of the listed emergency advisors (some take call any time of night)if she is acting or looking "funny".

What you were seeing was vomit. Gliders do not vomit unless ill. She needs to be seen by a vet at least by tomorrow (Saturday). I would not wait till Monday.

Please update the board as to his findings.

Sorry to hear this. I know you must be so worried. I had a feeling it was vomit. Praying that your baby will feel better soon. Please keep us posted.

Take a water bottle with you. Keep giving her fluids.

Karin,

Is she still throwing up? Can your vet see her in the morning. The main thing right now is to make sure that she stays hydrated (if she is drinking plenty of water, she should be). I'll see if I can round up some help.

Karin,

I've sent out a call for help.... If you cannot find a vet willing to see Tira then hopefully she will be alright until morning. If the throwing up has subsided, hopefully that is a good sign. What kind of treat did she eat before she started to throw up? I'm doing a search as well, will be right back if I find anything helpful.

Karen-thinking about you and Tira and sending healing prayers and positive energy your way. Petunia and Jojo are willing to donate all of their Saturday treats if that would help. If your vet is still too sick to see her tomorrow, maybe an assistant would be knowledgeable enough to do a sub-q shot?

I talked to Ken....there vet would see the glider as he is on call. But it is a two hour drive.

Ken says, you are in the Chicago area....I would check out the vet links first and if no one there then start calling every vet in the book. You are near a large metropolitan city...you should be able to locate a emerg clinic who will admin fluids to keep her going till morning.

Let me know how it is going. For now NO APPLE JUICE unless you dilute it 50/50 with pedilyte or water. Keep her warm.

Karin our vet will see her if he's on call. If Dr. Sampson is on call I would not go to him. I would tell him that you need Dr. Howenboken (Dr. H) since it is a sugar glider and ask him if he can reach him to get him to the vets office. Their number is (815) 537-5147. This is the cel phone they use at night when they are on call.
Tira and you are both in our prayers and thoughts and let us know if we can do anything. Big hugs coming your way.

Karin...it sounds like Tira has gotten the date lodged in and partially blocking her esophagus and is attempting to dislodge the date with her described actions-( "throwing up about 5x" & "moving her mouth about 100x a sec" ) If the esophagus or airway were totally blocked in this amount of time, suffice to say, she would be in more dire condition..sounds like she needs to be seen by vet to dislodge the portion of the date that is partially blocking her pathway. If she could, she would expel it herself, but at this point, she's likely only able to regurgitate a portion of fluid she is ingesting and the date is remaining in place. The vet will likely use a flexible and narrow device to insert in her esophagus to dislodge the date. I'm no expert, but I have seen Kira react in a similar manner to this with a piece of watermelon this past summer and when she was able to regurgitate the piece of fruit that was blocking her pipes, she was fine...she did the same thing with the hands and mouth movements, and the vomiting of clear liquid balls until the blockage was completely eliminated. Keep us updated, PLEASE! Wish you could do a glider "Heimlich" on her! The vet will be able to get it out though!
