Atm I am just doing research, so this is all hypothetical, but, if/when I get my gliders, I would prefer to be able to custom-make my own reptarium to fit my space and be able to make travel reptariums, and housing for more gliders if I were ever to need it. I've seen something on here about someone who makes them to sell, and a few people who have made their own. I am pretty crafty - my mom and I are always coming up with new contraptions for all area of our house when we can't buy exactly what we are looking for. Anyone know what kind of/where to find the mesh material - something that is durable as I have heard that the quality of some meshes isn't that great anymore, and the basic instructions for making one? Thanks in advance! Kim

You can make the frame out of PVC easily enough. The hard part is the mesh. I use PetDFence that you can get at Lowes. I haven't seen any online tutorials, but, if you have a sewing machine that can handle heavy fabrics and are comfortable putting in a zipper, it's not too bad.

Awesome. Yeah, the mesh is the biggest snag I've had so far. I've looked up the landware hardware net and cloth and how to make a cover out of those, but you have to use tons of zip ties?? yikes. I would much prefer to use a sewing machine, and I'm sure I'll end up using it for more then making a reptarium. Some toys would definately be in order! All this research is making me so antsy. Its hard to remind myself sometimes to take my time with it and not just jump right in. I have found myself spending hours on here looking up stuff. lol

http://www.metroscreenworks.com/shop/pet...=2&sort=20aNot too bad if you buy bulk, if not be prepared to spend about as much as you could have someone make it for you. The screening isn't cheap but holds up much better than the thin original rept screening. HINT, double stitch ALL seams, I am preparing to repair 2 covers now because they weren't double-stitched and the seams have come apart.

How much of the screen do you guys usually use to make your reptariums? Is there a roll size you usually buy or does it depend on what size reptarium you are making?

The stuff at Lowe's comes in 4ft by 7ft rolls, about $25 a roll I believe.
What I buy depends on the size. I made a travel cage that is 20x20x30 and didn't need nearly what I needed for 30x30x45.

Ok ill have to look for that size roll.
If I use the screens the cover won't be machine washable anymore right? silly question probably, but I'd rather ask then find out when I try to wash it and it breaks my machine :O
If not its simple enough to spray it off in the shower.

more questions:
If I use the PetDFence screen will that hold smell the way that some of the PVC coated meshes will? It says its made of fiberglass so im hoping it won't.
Second, is there any way to put a door on the front? I thought I saw something about a door made from a plastic bin with the bottom cut off. or if there was some way to make a door made from a PVC square on the front - maybe supported by the PVC usually running through the middle. Just cut the screen so that its a flap and then add a zipper. That would probably be the biggest downfall for me: no easy access door :/

I have not had issue washing the PetDFence in the washer, as far as wear on it or smell. It WILL collect any fleece pills that wash off, so, don't wash it with your cage sets. And I had trouble getting mine into the washer, but, I had a itty bitty cruddy washer so that might have been my problem there. The PetDFence isn't fiberglass at all. It has a polyester thread core, it's the same type of material fleece is made of, just a different process of making a material versus a coat-able mesh. (Oooo I made a new word!)
You can put a zipper in however you like, I personally like having the zipper be the whole front side like a refrigerator. I have no problem putting any size toy or wheel into the cage and the larger ones I can get into completely with my gliders.
