I am copying Bozeman and starting a thread on the "Silent Spinner" wheel.

Same idea. I want facts about injuries caused by the silent spinner and possible ways to make it safer.

i used it for a short time and i didn't have any problems directly with glider safety, but after a month or 2 of use i noticed a big problem.

i was settling in for bed one night and heard this HORRIBLE racket coming from the cage and rushed out to check on them and thought maybe the middle screw was loose or something. i checked it and it was as tight as ever, well it turns out that it snapped 3 bars on my cage. the verticle bars snapped where they attach to the horizontal ones.

needless to say i was NOT happy about that. as it basically ruined the cage that i had purchased only 6 months before.

i also did notice that it could be possible for them to get their tails stuck in the back, it seems like a very small space so it is unlikely and the wheels that make it turn are rubber so i don't know how much damage it would do but i would think it could happen.

like i said i never noticed it happening with my gliders though, but it seems like a possibility. idk

I've used the LARGE Spinners for years w/no problems. I have a few cages that refuse to run on mesh tracks & these are the only solid track wheels I will allow them to run on. I've read reviews that they fell apart after just a few month's of use but mine go on them all night long & never any issues. I do take care not to get them soaking wet when cleaning & NEVER put them in the dishwasher. I think this is important for the bearings etc in the back of the wheel. I check the back often where it attaches to the cage to make sure it's nice & tight. I choose to place the wheels where it 'sit's on the more solid horizontal cross bar so that not much pressure is on the skinny vertical bars. But my Spinners are all in sturdy cages. I have a travel cage that is all skinny bars & even though you could still 'rest' it on a cross bar I can see where the weight ~ especially from heavy running would eventually pull the welds apart. If I needed to use a Spinner in this type cage I would probably go ahead & use the stand & zip tie it down. I clean them inside the cages anyway.

Edited to add: The whir of the wheel is more of a 'white noise' but they are NOT silent. The pounding of little feet on plastic can be noisey. I can tell which glider is in the wheel in which cage while I'm in bed @ night by the sound of their pitter-pat smile

They don't hold up well. I can't think of it necessarily being a safety issue unless the colored part only partially breaks loose from the white leaving a gap for limbs to get stuck in. I got one that was hamster sized with a glider that I adopted and it only held up about a week at my house before the part that attached to the bars snapped. I think they had been using it with the stand. They used them at work for a while but they did seem to fall apart much quicker than I would have expected, usually where the the two wheel sections connect.

Yep! I had one initially as my travel wheel. It broke the 2nd night of use. I like the wheel itself - it's rather quiet, it's not slippery inside as you would expect it to be and it's a GREAT size. But, having those two parts connected and then seeing them split that morning - just made me too nervous about a finger or toe getting caught.

When i got into gliders i bought these wheels. Mine would run so hard it would snap the wheel off the part that attatches it to the cage. Im talking snap as in no good anymore. I think i went thru like 4 within a few months. I would use this wheel for travel if i had to but not perm use. Aside from the fear of a glider snapping it like mine did and it falling on then and trapping them under it is a ok wheel for travel.

I had a Silent Spinner when I first bought Gizzy, but I didn't like how he could get his toes or nails caught in the space where the white part of the wheel meets the colored part of the wheel....there's a few tiny spaces if I remember correctly, and I just didn't want to take that chance....
