Mary's Beloved Petey has crossed the Rainbow Bridge tonight cry cry cry
Petey meant the world to her and she is so heartbroken. He was bring treated for an anal infection and had a fatal reaction to the Torb. I just don't know what else to say right now as this is very upsetting. I just talked to Mary this afternoon about Petey. Please pray for Mary.

Thank you, Pat for posting for me and thank you for the kind words to everyone. Petey was a broken glider when he came to me on April 5, 2007. He had five homes, had been physically abused and was terrifed of everything. I was still very new to gliders when I took him in, but I knew his aggressive behaviour (he gave the girl I got him from 27 stitches) was out of fear.

I was so proud of him at the vets yesterday, he did not even crab. Even when I was holding him up spread eagle for an ultrasound to make sure his bladder and everything looked ok.

This is part of a video memorial a friend made for me when Roo, Petey's cage mate and love of his life, passed (Nov.5, 2008, from an inoperable kidney stone. They only got just over a year together, but they loved a lifetime's worth and Roo helped Petey to become more confident.) It is only a small part of it (the original is on my old hard drive, which I need to get everything off.) But Petey is in a few pics. The only peace I have is they are reunited again.

I will be having a full necropsy done. I want to know (if possible) what happened. I know it is possible he had a reaction to the torb. I just know within a minute of him taking it, things were not right, and got worse as time went on.

Pat is right....love your babies, you just never know. I was telling a friend yesterday when I brought Petey into my family, I made him a promise this would be his last home, that I would never rehome him and he would die here. Little did I know it would be last night.

I fly you my little Petey Pooper.....you stole mommies heart from the second I met you and you took a huge piece with you. Be good, kiss Roo for me and I will see you again one day. You will never hurt or fear again my sweet angel.

Btw, my avatar pic is Petey. He won pic of the week with that pic...I named it 'Bless Me', as it looks like he is praying. This is how I will always remember him.

Thank you to everyone. What I am about to write
is killing me to say. I had to take Petey yesterday to my regular dog vet. He has seen gliders before, including mine. My reg. glider vet was out for personal reasons until Saturday. I had called there first. When I went to the vet, I told him Petey had had torb. I have heard the phrase 'make sure to get torb for pain' so many times. I had always thought Torb, Butorphanol and Buprenex were all the same drug, I had never questioned it. All these years. So, I told him 'yup, Petey had had torb.' He didn't, it was Buprenex, which is a completely different drug, less sedating. That being said, Torb is a drug used with gliders....but in some cases it can cause a deadly drop in blood pressure and this is most likely what caused Petey to pass, based on how it happened. Dosage for torb was correct, but he had never had it, I was mistaken. He had a reaction to it. Saddest part of it, is there is a drug that counteracts the torb and supportive care is administered as well (fluids, even meds to help blood pressure increase, although usually the counteractive drug is all that is needed with fluids). I saw within a minute Petey was reacting 'different' but I put it off to him just feeling odd, maybe hallucinating a little, which can happen on any of these meds. But he had ever reacted that way, and certainly not that fast. The vets was open for one more hour when I gave him that drug. I didn't know he was having a bad reaction....I thought he had had it three other times. I messed up and my actions in the very least contributed to his passing. I could have had no way of knowing he would have a reaction (even if he had had torb before....anyone can suddenly have a reaction), but if I had only called and said 'something is wrong'....I doubted myself and it cost Petey his life. It kills me to say it, but I have to let people know. I have so many times heard the drug 'torb' suggested, but I have learned it can be a very lethal drug in some cases, sadly in Petey's. Buprenex is a different drug. I wish had just called back to my reg. vets first and asked what they gave him in the passed. He would be here now. I don't know how I will ever forgive myself. I thougth I 'knew' what I was doing. I didn't. Petey trusted me with his life. My vet trusted what I was saying (and he had no reason to question it, as it is a drug normally used on gliders, but it had not been used on Petey.) I am writing this as a word of caution. If you ever give torb to your glider, and you see a reaction that you question, even if you have used it before...call your vet. I could have possibly saved his life if I had done that....if I had gotten the counteractive drug in time. Please know your gliders, love your gliders and triple check everything. I don't want Petey's death to be in vain.

Petey I am sorry beyond any words I could ever say.

Mary, Petey's death will not be in vain. I will be on the alert in the future, for such a reaction and will, in fact, ask my vet for something besides Torb. I wasn't aware of the risks with Torb, until now.

I am so sorry to hear of Petey's passing. He sounded like a really great little guy. At least he was able to know love before he moved on.

The information you posted is infinitely valuable, I will make sure I request something other than Torb, should a vet ever suggest it for one of my gliders. Thank you so much for sharing your story and for saving Petey from a much crueler fate.

I am so very sorry for your loss, Mary. hug2 I know it's easier said than done, but please don't blame yourself. I KNOW in my heart that Petey doesn't blame you and has nothing but love and wonderful memories of his life with you. You did think you knew what you were doing, I'm sure any one of us would have done the same thing. hug2 Thank you for the caution and know that you and Petey will be saving others the same heartache because I am sure that every single person reading this will now question their assumptions about the pain meds given to their own gliders. hug2 hug2
