I use puppy pads at the bottom of my reptariums, and today I discovered some brownish colored urine spots! What does this mean?

If a glider is healthy it's urine should be clear and not smell too strong. I would say you need to take your glider to a vet for a check. Have you fed anything different in the past few days? Has there been any behaviour changes or have you noticed any hissing or difficulty when trying to pee?

If it truly is the urine, it should not be brown. I know when my kidneys shut down many years ago, mine was the color of beef broth. I know gliders have different anatomies, but it sounds like a vet check is in order.

Please do address Lorna's questions so we can be more sure.

I haven't fed anything different. They are on Priscilla's diet. In the last batch, I used okra, carrots, and corn. I used mango, green seedless grapes, asian pears, kiwis, and maybe something else. Last night I fed them the batch with scrambled eggs, also with a few mealies (from grubco) for a treat. They have been eating this same batch for a couple months. I make a huge batch (some with scrambled eggs, some with boiled shredded chicken, and some plain for mealie nights) and freeze it so it lasts a couple months. It takes me hours to make. Of course I also spread the pet glider multivitamin on top.

I have not noticed any of them acting differently or hissing when they pee. Tonight I will watch them very closely, and plan for a vet check for all in the morning! As a side note, I am using the last of the chicken batch tonight and will be making a whole new batch of everything (egg, chicken, and plain). (ALL FRESH) Veg - carrots, corn off the cob, green beans. Fruits - mango, papaya, kiwi, green seedless grapes.

Is there a chance that the batch has gone off? I don't think cooked chicken and other meats are safe after a certain length of time.

Have you done the pinch test for dehydration? Where you gently pinch the skin between the shoulder blades. If it stays in a tent shape or goes back down slowly it is a sign that he is dehydrated and needs to see a vet soon.

Try watch him when he goes potty tonight and try tell if it is urine or runny poo. I think either way you should take him for a check up as gliders are very good at hiding illness until it's alomost too late to save them .

Have you noticed any hissing or crabbing while urinating? Or any behavior changes (e.g., lethargy)?

Since you've been feeding the same diet and this is just happening (right?), I'd say a vet check is definitely in order.

I have not noticed any hissing or crabbing while urinating. I have not noticed any behavior changes. Yes this is just happening. As I said, I will be keeping a sharp eye out tonight! They are not dehydrated. They drink plenty of water, not to mention their meal is very moist. Any ideas what could be wrong? What kind of tests need to be run?

I made the last batch on 4/9/06 so it is a little over two months old. It stays in the freezer, and I break chunks off.

I also thought to check my wheat germ, as I have had it for over 6 months. It says best before 12/13/06, and I do keep it refrigerated.

Sorry about my post asking what you answered above. I hadn't read it yet.

It sounds like the only possible cause might be old chicken with freezer burn perhaps. Everything seems to check out as far as your diet, the fresh fruits and veggies you use, their hydration levels, their activity levels... One test I know to ask for is a C&S (culture and sensitivity).

The wheat germ needs to be refridgerated after you open it. Have you kept it in a cupboard or was it in the fridge??

I put it in the fridge right after I opened it the first time, and that is where it stays. Do you think I need to take all 5 in to the vet? Last time I took 1 to the vet for a check, it cost $50. I'm closing on my very first house on Tuesday, and I don't even know how much I need to close. Not to mention I still need to buy a fridge and such. But, my animals cannot take themselves to the vet so it is my responsibility. They depend on me, so they come first!

Better safe than sorry. I would have your baby checked by the vet. Like said above a urinalysis should be done with a stool check.

Gliders hide their illness and if there is something wrong you may not know it until it's too late.

You're such a great, responsible glider slave! I would think, unless you can isolate who is making the brown urine, and especially if they haven't had a wellness check in awhile, I would try to take them all in.

Congratulations on your new home!

The best you can do is watch each one really close and see if the problem is with one or all of them. Have a few paper towles ready and try put it under each one as they go potty. This will give you a better idea of what your dealing with as in if it's urine or poop issues.

Please keep us posted as to how they are doing. But it really does look like one if not all need to have some tests run. If you talk with your vet about the billing most are happy to set up a payment plan if you have a large bill... maybe this will help you out some

Sending lots of (((HUGS))) to you and all your kids.

Ok, I will try to isolate which one is doing it. I will call the vet first thing in the morning and take them in. Thank you all for all of your help. I will let you know what happens!

We are very exited about our house!! The gliders will now have their own room!

Well, I didn't notice anything wrong with them last night. No more brownish urine on the puppy pad. I took them to the vet this morning, and of course none of them wanted to go potty before I went or while I was there. I took the freshest piece of fecal matter from their cage with me. They did a fecal float and said there was no presence of parasites. They did not do a urinalysis. They didn't even weigh them. The most I got out of the visit is that I will not go back there again. There wasn't even a vet there that dealt with gliders. Yes, I did call beforehand to see if they treated gliders, and they said yes. So, I will do playtime individually this week and see if any of them show any signs of sickness. I am also making a new batch of food today. I will be making a smaller batch so it does not stay in the freezer as long, just in case that had anything to do with it. I will also be searching for a more knowledgeable vet.

I'm happy to hear that you didn't see any more brown urine on the puppy pad, but you are doing the right thing by keeping a close eye on them for the next week.

I'm sorry to hear you had such a poor vet visit, I had a very similar experience myself before and it's pointless when they don't do anything or tell you anything.

The new fresh batch is good. Keep us posted if there are any changes.

I would still check with your vet, and have a urinalysis done. While POOP may change color according to diet....except for certain medication side effects, pee normally doesn't. When you said "brown"...first thing I thought of was blood (it will show up that color in urine). So please get into the vet-if something is going on in there...even on an on/off basis-and it's waited upon, by the time the problem is obvious it could be too late for your little one.

I am doing playtime individually and putting down puppy pads to see if any are still peeing brown. This way I can tell who is doing it. If any continue to do this, I will take the individual(s) to the vet.

sounds like you've got a good method of narrowing down who might need help. Keep a close eye on them, and good luck finding a better vet, if you don't already have one lined up.
