(The following is being sent out by Martins and they have asked me to please pass the word on so all their customers see this.)
Martin’s Cages, Inc. 4554 Marietta Ave. Columbia, PA 17512 (717)684-1864
May 31, 2011 To our valued customers,
You are receiving this letter because you have purchased a Martin’s sugar glider cage from us some time between October 2010 to present.
We were notified that sugar gliders were becoming ill and some were passing away in PVC coated cages. Some of these sugar gliders were in our PVC coated sugar glider cages.
We are very saddened by these losses and illnesses. We are pet owners ourselves and do understand what you are going through if your gliders are affected.
We have been trying to research this and come up with answers and unfortunately cannot come up with answers quickly enough. We are not sure if it is the PVC coating on the cages or if something else is causing this problem. There are gliders becoming ill in other cages, not just Martin‘s and cages built from wire using a wire manufacturer other than the wire manufacturer that we use. We are not saying it is definitely the cages making the gliders sick, we’re just taking the steps to make sure your glider is safe in case it is a PVC coated wire problem.
At this time if you haven’t had any problems with your sugar gliders becoming ill and you have purchased a PVC coated cage please remove your sugar glider(s) from the cage.
We are working on a new line of sugar glider cages. We were not comfortable placing a recall on the cages and sending out new PVC coated cages since no one knows what exactly is the problem.
We will soon have available our sugar glider cages made in powder coated wire. This will take a little time since we don’t powder coat at our facility but as soon as the new powder coated sugar glider cages are available we will be happy to replace your existing cage with a powder coated version of the cage model you purchased.
It would be helpful if you could please e-mail us at sales@martinscages.com once you receive this letter so we can put you on the priority list to have a new powder coated cage shipped out to you. Please put “cage replacement” in the subject line and include your name and current address.
Thank you!

Makes SO MUCH MORE SENSE to me than the way (PPP) Perfect Pocket Pets is doing it! I really don't trust replacing an affected cage with a cage made of the exact same material! I'm sad that Martins took so long to make this statement, and it is regretful that they seem to have been pressured by (PPP) Perfect Pocket Pets's actions into taking action for themselves. (Why is a reputable cage company waiting for a mill broker to take the lead??). However, I think the *way* they are saying they'll take care of the problem makes TONS more sense!

Alden, PPP is not sending out the same wire replacement cages. That would be counter productive now wouldn't it? What are the cages that (PPP) Perfect Pocket Pets is sending out made of? Is it pvc coated wire, or..?

Sara, the cages that (PPP) Perfect Pocket Pets are sending out are indeed PVC Coated HOWEVER, it is from a totally different manufacturing company. One that has had NO cases of any issues, unlike the others... I applaud BOTH Martins and (PPP) Perfect Pocket Pets for stepping up and doing right for the GLIDERS and the glider owners in this case. Doesnt matter why someone is doing it, or how they are doing it, the fact of the matter is both companies are being proactive to make it better for the GLIDERS. As I told someone on the phone today, NOBODY is to *Blame* here, NOBODY (including the Manufacturing Companies) did anything to cause harm intentionally. Nobody is saying anyone HAS to take a cage from (PPP) Perfect Pocket Pets that they are generously offering to HELP out... they can continue to leave their gliders in the pop up dog crates or aquariums or go down and buy something else while waiting on replacements. But the help has been offered, and it saddens me to see the ONLY ones that seem to be *nitpicking and complaining* or passing judgement are those that dont even have any gliders affected. Time to put your emotions and likes and dislikes aside folks and do what you see these two companies doing....Working towards trying to make things better for the GLIDERS and leaving the PEOPLE out of it. Just sayin.

I'll be the first to admit I'll never be supportive of (PPP) Perfect Pocket Pets but I give them props for stepping up and doing what's right in regards to this situation. I'm glad Martin's is stepping up and doing what's right now.
