Chris, My patients who take the human form of Clavamox do complain of the taste, sometimes diarrhea, and sometimes upset stomach. It is one of the more harsh oral antibiotics on the tummy that I use. It could lead to loss of appetite, but much more often the weight loss I see is from the infection itself. In fact, once the antibiotic is on board and addressing the infection, appetite and weight gain usually rapidly improve. There is nothing obvious to me in amoxicillin or clavulanic acid that should impair growth and development other than loss of appetite. If the amoxicillin/clavulanic acid was acting as a mild cathartic, it is easily explained the a small weight gain could accompany the end of the Rx. So could a ramping up infection now that the antibiotic is removed.
The info that the wet fur returned 3 days after stopping the med is pretty good evidence that Clavamox was not eradicating the infection, only impeding it. Amoxicillin (the active antibiotic in Clavamox) is a "cidal" antibiotic (kills bacteria, as opposed to others that are only "static" and not killing but slowing, like erythromycin or tetracyline), so my first thought is that there might be an occult nidus of infection somewhere that was not addressed by the antibiotic course.
For example if your appendix bursts, you'll be sick. The body will wall off the pus and infection. You need surgery to clear the abscess. If an antibiotic is given, you may lose your fever and feel better, but not all the way better, and you cannot clear out the abscess with an antibiotic. As soon as the med is discontinued, overt signs and symptoms recur. Some stool bugs quickly develop resistance, so it doesn't have to be an abscess, but the germ in question obviously isn't gone.
I wonder if the identification of the bug was by microscopic gram stain only, or was the complete genus/species ID done? My recollection was that you grew Klebsiella and Strep on a full C&S. Never heard which strep. Although Klebsiella would usually be addressed by Baytril, one would guess many streps would succumb to Amoxicillin. But enterococcus and some of the stool cocci can be quite resistant and real buggers to kill. Did you ever get specific culture results and antibiotic sensitivities?
You have really gone above and beyond, and I hope you get the improvement you and your friends deserve very soon.
