So it finally happened, one small moment of forgetfulness, and that's all it takes. I found Daddy in the toilet today, long gone. Although I always take care to close the bathroom door, just in case, I must have left the lid to the toilet open, because there he was when I got up. Poor baby, I hate to think how he must have struggled. In addition, his mate, Sugarmomma, has a baby in pouch. She is not tame at all, so I'm not quite sure how to help her through this. Please give suggestions as how best to comfort her, and Please, please, please, don't forget to close the lid!

I am so sorry for your loss. It does only take one small moment of forgetfullness. Please remember it was an accident and don't blame yourself. As for his mate, just keep her close, pay her alot of attention and maybe give her more treats. You said she wasn't bonded well, well, now would be a good time to start with daytime pouchbonding and nighttime playing. Keep her company as much as possible so she won't be lonely. I would wait until after babies are oop and weaned before thinking of adding a new mate, as a new mate may just cannibalize babies or stress mom out too much and same happen. Once her joeys come oop, just be sure to keep an eye on them and her, and be ready to help if she needs it as Dad is not there now. Once babies are with her, she won't be as lonely as she will be right now. I am so sorry. Good luck.

Actually, (and I hate to contradict Bonzai!!! Or say the exact opposite but) if you get a new male while the babies are still in pouch, the new male will accept them as his. They won't have their father's scent on them, so the new male will step in and take over like he was the dad. If you do put another male in there, I'd make sure it was a tame one, or one that you can bond with. I have a female that is terrified of humans, she crabs when I even go near her cage, no matter what I'm doing. But, her mate is a sweetie, we're working on taming and bonding with him, as long as I leave her alone, I can take her babies out, I can take her mate out, I can even pet her from the back. But, she cringes away from me, she is just petrified of humans.
If you know she has a good history and not an abusive one, you should be able to bond with her, it may take time, but you should be able to progress, even if it's little tiny baby steps! I'm so so so sorry about Daddy. It was an accident, don't be too hard on yourself!
Hugs!

Thanks to you both for your support and suggestions. My bf admits he was responsible for the lid, but it hardly makes me feel better.. Maybe Momma will let me console her, I will do my best to make her feel less alone. This is her second joey, the first set was twins, and they did great. Looks like pouch babies are coming to work!
Thanks again,
Tam and and

Hey if I am wrong, contradict away!! lol. That is nice to know, because I was always under the impression that they would not accept babies that were not their own, even tho I always wondered how they would know...it's not like they can get a paternity test at Petco...lol. Thank you for setting me straight on that Chey I appreciate it..

paternity test from petco...that is funny. working in social service i deal with human paternity tests all the time.

Tamalama: so sorry for your loss, accidents happen and the best thing to do is keep SugarDaddy close to your heart and learn from the mistake.

Sometimes it would be nice if they could get a paternity test at petco wouldn't it! Make things simpler sometimes!!!
Tamalama, hugs, sweetie. We know and you know you did all you possibly could. That's all that matters. And they know you did all you could and you would never hurt them deliberately.
Take care, give yourself and the little mom a few days to mourn and calm down. She'll be ok. And in time, you will too.
Chey

i think this is off topic, but i have a male who is int he fostor program, and he takes in abandoned babies and raises them(except feeding which we do). Is it because he is nuetered.

I am sorry for your loss, i'll be keeping you in my thoughts, and best of luck with the babies.
