I just found out my glider has cancer. I found lumps on her neck and the vet said there were three all together they did a biopsy and said it was cancer and that it was two types. i dont want to put her through surgery and the vet said that in all the cases of cancer they die anyway even if the lumps are removed it would only maybe give her a little more time i dont want her to suffer at all but i also dont want to put her down too soon i know animals hide pain well i want to do the right thing.
this is my second glider my first Basco was the sweetest and he died after 2 yrs of back leg paralisis they said he was having trouble absorbing calcium.now this glider is about 5 1/2 years old i thought that this glider was a boy also his name is Sir Didymus and i was told it was a nutered male and I just found out at the vet it has a pouch and is a female it was the only news i could laugh about that day.
I am wondering how common cancer is in gliders and if inbreeding is to blame at all I got my gliders from a pet store that seemed to be educated in gliders but who knows where they get them and if the breeders are being honest
thanks for listening or reading i guess

Basco,
I am so sorry about your glider. It's a horrible thing to lose one, and cancer is a dreaded disease in any living thing. I lost my Georgi last November to cancer, and it was awful. We are here to support you in any way we can. Give her extra love and kisses, and if the time comes, help her make that journey as only you can. We are here for you.

I am sorry your first post with us is under such tragic circumstances. Please register and join us.
Take care,

I'm so sorry that you must both face this.
I'm not sure if cancer is a common disease in sugar gliders, but I have read about a few cases.

Our thoughts are with you!

[:"blue"]This is always so heartbreaking for pet owners especially when the final decision may be left in our hands. I am so very very sorry you are having to go through this.

It is my hope that you have complete confidence in your vet and can look to him for guidance in the days ahead so that your little one does not suffer needlessly.

We are here for support in any way that we can. [/]

thank you everyone it is nice to have people out there who understand. I wish I had found this site sooner. didymus is still doing well she is running around and eating. my vet said to call her next week and see how things are so I will do that.I am giving her kisses and snuggles and I am happy to have this time with her. When my first one Basco died I didnt know what was wrong whith his back legs so I took him to the night emergency place and they at first thought it was from an injury so they said they should keep him over night and give him anti inflamitories but he died that night and I felt like a bad Mom I couldn't stop pictureing his face in the cage when I left and I said I would never do that again.so anyway at least this time I will be with her until the end when ever that may be
thanks again everyone for all the support
Randi

Look at that face! She is so precious! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/heartpump.gif" alt="" />
You have some very tough decisions ahead of you. It's so hard...the unknown. Treasure every moment you have with her.
You're in my thoughts!

What a cute picture! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

I know how you feel about Basco, also. I left my Mattie at the vet's w/pneumonia...she was rushed in as an emergency and they took her so quickly that I never got to say goodbye. On my way back to bring her food for the night, they called and let me know she had just passed...I never got to say goodbye...it's a feeling that will haunt you.

I am sure Didymus knows you love her, keep up with the extra snuggles and kisses....and know Basco is over the Bridge waitng for you to join him, and watching over you and Didymus, and she will have a friend when it's her turn to show her around the Rainbow Bridge.

Take care,

I'm so sorry about your little one. You will know in your heart when it's time. Yes, they hide illness well, but you'll know when she's suffering and it's time to let her go. You might do some research, diet can do miracles. Darcy is a great example of that. Humans have had miracles from diet as well. She's precious in that little hat, Santa couldn't ask for a cuter little helper!
Hugs to you both!
Chey

if she is not suffering i would just let her enjoy life. if i were u i would contact the lady with darcy who has a glider with cancer living many yrs since her diagnosis. all things are possible, even that the vet that did the tests and said she had cancer . the test might of been a miss diagnosis too. ever think of that. many people have had a mammogram and told they had something wrong and there was a lump and it was nothing. i even know people that were healed so just give her a variety of healthy foods and the lump might just one day dissapear, give her spring water. and lots of fresh fruits etc mine like stoneyfield farms organic yogurt in strawberry

Didymus may be stronger than the cancer! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/littleglider.gif" alt="" /> Lots of love to your wee one <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/heartpump.gif" alt="" /> She's a lucky girl to have you there for her - for a very long time, I hope.

Maybe a second medical opinion would be in order?? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nixweiss.gif" alt="" />

Randi,
I know how you feel about your other glider. My 1st glider Sampson had an accident and went into shock. I brought him to the emergency vet right away and that's where he passed. I still haven't forgiven myself that I wasn't there for him, and I'll always have that what if feeling inside. You're making a good decision having her home with you, at least she knows that you love her very much. I'm so sorry for your sad news. I know words don't take away the pain, but you 2 will be in my prayers tonight.

thank you everyone very much. I actually did talk to the vet that delt with Darcys cancer she explained alot to me but unfortunately Didymus has three lumps and the lumps are growing so it is a different type, but on the good side she still is eating and running around although last night she was making alot of noise even for her so we will just have to wait and see again thanks for your support, Randi
