I don't know how or what went on but one of my glider's top front tooth is loose. Is there something I am doing wrong? I feel like it is what I do when I make their meals at night. I make bml and mix in a bit of yogurt and a bit of applesauce. Is that something I should not be doing? Should I put more calcium in his diet? I already put calcium in the bml but am I not putting enough? I would love to get input on this matter. Thank you!!

Unfortunately peridontal issues happen. It could be that your glider bumped their mouth, or had something caught between the teeth, or has a slight infection...it's hard to say. I would recommend a vet visit this week. An x-ray may be helpful to see if there is any abscess or infection in the root of the tooth where you can's see. Also if anything is caught between the teeth, you vet should have the magnifying, goggles to see what is there and remove it. If caught soon enough it's possible that a round of antibiotics can tighten the tooth back up.

Bml was made to be fed as is. Don't add anything or take anything away or it changes the nutritional composition of the diet.

As for the loose tooth, I would probably let a vet take a look at that as its not normal for your glider's teeth to loosen or just fall out. (At least not that I'm aware of.)
Also, I would take a look around his cage and double check it for safety. Its possible he went to do a divebomb from the top and hit his face?
But yeah, he needs to have it checked out.

I will take him to the vet on wednesday. While I am cleaning his cage, I will look. But I have been trying to be aware of anything and everything I can with him as much as possible. If I do notice anything else when it comes to this, I will try and take him in tomorrow since today is a holiday. But he does not seem to really take notice. Or he is doing what gliders do best which is hiding. It is really hard to tell. But I don't want to sit there and mess with it if may make the situation worse.

What do you mean by hiding? Right now, he should be sleeping, which is normal. But how does he react if you try to see him or take him out? Is he acting differently than he normally does?

Well when they first start to have issues, they hide it. But no, he has been acting the same, nothing different when i hold him and play with him.

I really do think that a vet visit is in order, sooner than later. You just don't want to take a chance of it possibly being an abscess that could turn worse, get into his bloodstream, etc. Just my opinion.

Gliders only have one set of teeth. They don't have "baby teeth" that get replaced by "adult teeth". So having a loose tooth is NOT normal.

You shouldn't be adding calcium or mixing in yogurt and/or applesauce, for starters. Follow the recipe to a TEE, don't make changes, you can offer yogurt/applesauce as treats, and I would definitely try to get to the vet within the next few days.

I tried to get him in today but they were booked and i have him in a hospital cage right now and he has an appointment first thing is the morning. He did not lose the tooth overnight and i have already been trying to baby him.

Went to the vet and she tried to see if any of his teeth were loose and she didnt see any. But just to be sure, i should continue bulking up calcium.

Ehh...I would be a little wary. Too much calcium can be just as harmful as too little. As long as you're feeding the diet correctly his calcium levels should be okay. (Barring any underlying illnesses.)

When you examined his tooth the first time, was it visably wiggling? I know my little girls (human girls lol) get very excited all the time and tell me they think their teeth are loose. When I try to wiggle them, what they've been feeling is just the pad of their finger moving. It kind of fools them.

If you are feeding BML, there should not be a calcium issue. And calcium usually isn't the cause for loose teeth.

I'd be more concerned about lack of vit C, periodontal issues or other infections.

Some infections or parasites can cause the body to not absorb the calcium being fed.


Can you be more specific in what you are feeding? What in addition to the BML mix are you feeding? What types of fruits and what types of vegies?

Ive had two gliders randomly lose an upper front tooth...;my Riker, who is 8 1/2, and Clotho who is about 5...Riker's no clue but suspect he hit/broke it on something...vet had to remove the necrotic root when it started infecting his upper jaw. Clotho, it broke or something and healed over fine..no other dental issues. If the tooth does have to come out (infection), the dental gel used for rabbits that hardens inside the socket (it has antibiotics in it, and dissolves as the socket closes-but I dont have the info on it exactly on this computer) If you do a search here on Lyah, you may come up with what the stuff is. Riker had it and so did another glider of mine, Lyah, who had repeated mouth infections and ended up losing all but a few of her teeth...but that stuff in the sockets helps them heal beautifully. However, frequently with diet it isnt' the front teeth that go first...its usually something else...I would still post all your diet though, as you never know...if youre following an established one and using the vits//mins that shouldn't be it....but I dont see the following info also...how old is the little one?
