Boo, I have a sick baby frown...my poor peanut Ruthie. Basically, she's been making that "spitting into her hands" noise that gliders make when they spit and then groom themselves, but it didn't sound right to me. She was doing it so hard/intensely that she was half crabbing and jerking her head forward pretty hard and licking around her mouth like she tasted something bad. It reminded me of a cat trying to cough up a hair ball. Plus she wasn't even actually grooming - just making the noise HARDCORE. She did it for the SECOND time on Tuesday at around 6pm - she had already done it once before that day about 2 hours earlier but she seemed fine so I chalked it up to randomness or maybe a bad taste in her mouth. I talked to Val and she said she sometimes sees this in gliders who are developing a tooth abscess and she also mentioned a respiratory issue could be cropping up, so I decided that if she did it again, I would take her right to the vet. Days passed and nothing UNTIL today (well yesterday techincally being it's after midnight), Saturday, she did it at around 3:00pm. I immediately called the vet and explained everything. Two vets there see gliders, Dr. Mike and Dr. Karen, but it was Dr. Mike's last day (boo!), so they got in touch with Dr. Karen, who said to bring her in for 7pm when she would be starting her shift (my vet clinic/hosptial is open 24/7, THANK GOD).

My mom and I drove her down and we did a UA, fecal, physical exam, and most importantly, x-rays of her head and chest to look for issues in the lungs or abscesses in the face. Not so great news...she has congestion in her left lung frown The vet diagnosed it as being either bronchitis or pneumonia, which of course made me panic slightly. She pointed out on the x-ray where the congestion was, and yeah, you can definitely see it. She said because I noticed the "off' behavior so quickly, we caught it early enough that it hadn't affected her breathing or oxygen levels. **Important lesson new people: GO WITH YOUR GUT! If something sounds, looks, or feels off with the gliders that you know well, there's probably good reason for you to be thinking that way!** I said in my first post in the emergency section on another forum that something didn't feel right to me and thank God I went with my instincts here.

So Baytril it is...carmel flavored since Baytril tastes GROSS. Thank God Ruthie loves the flavor! If she takes a turn for the worse, we'll go right back down there. I have Dr. Karen's PERSONAL email for any questions and for updates - I LOVE MY vet. Get this...she brought us into an exam room with a computer and she was on ASGV LOL!!! She said she was one of the first vets to ever sign up there and she is A FABULOUS vet - we've been seeing her for almost 5 years now. She looked up the dosage for Baytril on there. She knew all about HPW Complete and she does very thorough exams - she was with us for over an hour, she's great smile I guess this could also count as Ruthie's wellness exam because she had a fecal and UA, plus I always get x-rays done on them anyway (no sedation) to check bone density. I'll bring Gizzy down for his exam as soon as Ruthie is healthy again.

New people, another important point: learn to handle your glider at the vet. The vet tried holding Ruthie first because Dr. Karen LOVES gliders and Ruthie was NOT having it, squirming and nipping. I took her, and she was such a good girl for me - stayed still while the vet listened to her lungs and palpated her tummy. She even let the vet open her mouth a tad to look at her gums. It helps the vet SO MUCH if they have both hands free to exam your glider(s) and you learn how to properly hold them during the exam. Plus, it's so much LESS stressful on the glider if they are in hands they feel safe with.

I guess I would love it if you guys could say some prayers for my girl and send some positive vibes our way. She's eating fine (like a pig actually), took her medicine perfectly, is playing normally (although she's wiped out tonight from the car ride and vet visit) - there was nothing to alert me to this EXCEPT the INTENSITY of that sound. Totally normal grooming sound, but it just didn't sound right and when I watched her do it, didn't LOOK right. We all know how well gliders hide illness and injury, so knowing what's normal for your glider can be a matter of life and death sometimes, literally.

I wanted to mention really quick that if she's not better after the 7 days of Baytril is over, Dr. Karen said she's had a TON of success giving small exotics Chinese herbs as a way to help sorta cleanse and de-stress their bodies...how cool is that??? Dr. Karen...love her.

Oh my goodness poor baby! This is excellent advice! Your gut instinct is a powerful thing, my husband's dog just 6 months or so ago didn't do anything particular except not charge the door when I opened it. I. *knew* in my gut something was wrong. After a lot of tests we found a blockage in his tummy. No reason for me to really have thought it. Saved his life based on instinct.

Its an amazing thing your instincts, never ignore them!

Your sweet baby will be in my prayers~ sending lots of good vibes your way! hug2

What a GREAT glider ma! Always trust your instincts. If something doesn't feel right take them in to see a vet. In this case it was a move that caught an ill glider early so treatment could start. Its always a smart move!

Thanks for the prayers everyone. I can tell her sleep cycle is still a bit messed up from the vet visit, so she was all hyper for about an hour at around 11am, and then she settled back down. I picked the right flavor for her medicine (the choices were carmel - the one I picked, watermelon, banana bread, and molasses - they were out of tutti frutti)! She LOVES it! She licks up every drop, which is such a relief! I just want to know that she's going to be OK - I know gliders are much more resilient than people give them credit for, but I also know their respiratory systems can be pretty sensitive, ya know? She hasn't made that scary sound since yesterday, so that's good news.

I appreciate all the prayers, my little girl needs them right now frown Poor baby!!

Erin, I'm glad your babies are enjoying the Sissy, that brightens my day smile

ETA: Elena, I always get so excited when I see you post!! smile I hope everything is well with you!

Hey Chrystal,
Ruthie seems to be much better. She has not made that sound since the 2nd day of taking Baytril, so that's been a relief. They both have appointments for August for wellness checks and another x-ray will be done at that time to look at her chest (plus I get them both x-rayed anyway without sedation to look at bone density and look for crystals/stones). Her appetite is normal, so is her energy level and personality, her eyes are bright, ears are perky - everything seems to be going well! That sound though - it made my stomach sink and my heart pound and it was a huge gut check - I could not arrive at my vet's soon enough!

My vet has been amazing, as usual. I have her PERSONAL (not just work) email and she answers within 20 minutes everytime. She's simply wonderful and has provided me with a ton of reassurance through all of this.

Thanks for thinking of her, she's her bratty little self wink
