I've only had my fuzzies a little over 24 hours. I was planning on leaving them alone in the cage for 2 days, but I was noticing their nails were getting caught on the fleece an awful lot to the point that I was having to help free them.

My husband and I took them into the bathroom to try and clip their nails. This is one thing I haven't read up on yet. I think I did everything wrong. You tell me...

First my hubby tried holding Sophie while I gave her a treat. (Because she seemed the most willing to come out of the pouch.) He had a hard time holding her still and she started to get aggravated so I decided to hold her in my hands and clip, still too squirmy, and her nails are so sharp they were digging pretty deep into my skin. Painful! She no longer had any interest in that treat whatsoever.

Next I put her back in the pouch and tried dropping treats down to her. But she burrowed down to the bottom trying to get as far away from me as she could.

I didn't even attempt Jack. He ended up eating all the treats I dropped in there. I don't think he had a clue what was going on.

I did manage to get one nail clipped - the one and only toe that I actually managed to get a hold of and clip before the foot pulled away. I think it might have been Jack's.

AND the backs of my hands look like I tried to do handstands in a brier patch. Fun times. shakehead

I will either wrap them up in fleece like a burrito or leave them in a pouch and remove one foot at a time and clip the nails.

I hold the pouch shut to keep them from biting me, I have a couple that don't care if I do their nails and I have a couple that will draw blood during nail clipping if I am not careful.

How do you keep hold of their feet when they're being so squirmy?

Don't let them fool you. Although you always have to be careful, you can hold their little hands and feet more firmly than you think. They'll try to pull away or squirm, but without squeezing or pulling, hold the hand/foot firmly and clip.

Oh, and as a side note...when you begin time with them in their pouch, rub their hands and feet as much as you're able so that they can get used to having them touched. This will help with nail trimming. smile

Let me know if I can help.

The holding and rubbing feet part is really, really good advice. When I am holding my girls in their sleep pouch during the day, I will reach in and grab little feet and hold them and rub. At first they would try to pull away but now they are getting used to it and letting me do it.

Mandi~ I havent done this yet as I cant find one around here but I was also told to try using a glass nail file. You only have to go over the nail twice. That sounds EVER so much easier to me. Im (almost) looking forward to it.
lol! Good luck!

Two of my six think I'm performing Chinese water torture on them when trimming nails - Penny and Bug. The others, they sit and allow it to happen. It all comes in time...they will get used to it the more you do it.

Mandi...if you need help, please shoot me a PM and we'll get together and get it taken care of. I'd hate to see them get caught on anything!

I'm very new so bare with my ignorance... Do their nails have to be cut or can something like the "Nail o matic" accomplish that?

I'm not sure what the "Nail o matic" is. dunno

You can use Trim Trax in a Stealth Wheel and I know they have an insert for the Wodent, as well.

But yes, even if you have the inserts in the wheels, it doesn't mean you don't have to trim their nails.

One other thing that helps a lot with the nail clipping...don't do it at night when they are waking up...do it mid day when they are passed out. They are still tired this way and less aware of the process. It's not always a great help...but it does help.

We personally use the pouch method. We pull one leg out and close the pouch around the arm...clip the nails and then move to the next foot. Also, start with the hind feet. It seems to be universally less stressful for them and then they understand you aren't out to hurt them after you get those done.

Good luck with the next trimming.

Matt

One other thing I forgot...we don't use fingernail clippers for this process...we use a pair of Cat toenail clippers. They are also used for lizards and birds. They are smaller and look like a tiny pair of scissors with a notch in the tip. Place the nail int he notch and clip it. These make life MUCH easier. Also you can see around the nail tip better and makes it possible to see that you are clearing the finger better.

So I picked up a glass nail file, and I'm trying to file their nails while they're asleep in the pouch. I don't know if it's the resistance but they keep waking up and jerking their feet back. Sophie also bit me at one point. Do you run the file back in forth (like you would on your own nails), or just in one direction over and over again?

You can just run it a couple of times and that should be sufficient. It's normal for them to pull their little hands/feet back. Hold firmly but gently...it's okay if they tug a little bit. They're stronger than you think. smile
