His foot on the bottom of his cage. And then licking his foot. I think he might of hurt it. He won't let me get a good enough look at it. Every time I try and see he runs from me. When he goes to walk he is limping. And then keeps licking his foot. I haven't seen him bite it just licking it. I don't know how he would of hurt his foot. I am hoping the vet is in tomorrow because that's where we are going. I am hoping nothing to serious. Now I will be up all night watching him.

I would suggest you take a hand towel or piece of fleece and get ahold of him and take a look. If he is hurting, there is a higher risk of him chewing and doing more damage. You need to do what ever you have to do to prevent that. Do you have an ecollar to put on him?

Ok, he will need to be in an ecollar to prevent him from doing more damage. That looks painful and based on what you have described, (him licking it) it IS painful. If you do not have an ecollar or are unable to make one tonight, I strongly suggest you stay up with him and keep him distracted so he doesn't chew his foot or you will have even more problems and longer healing time.

It looks like he has somehow scraped it or bruised it. You will probably need to have him seen by a vet and get him some pain meds.

Do you use sand paper in your wheel? If so, that may have caused it. Or he could have friction burned it sliding down the bars of the cage. (just some possibilities).

He is in his sleeping pouch right now. All I can think of is that it is from the sand paper in his wheel. I only keep it in there 24 to 48 hours. I just saw it this evening. I have no e collar or don't know how to make one. But believe me I will be ordering the medical kit. Can I put neosporin on it. Or is that no good since I don't have the e collar.

If you want to call me, I can talk you through how to make an ecollar with things you probably have around the house. It is hard to "type" it out and make sense. My number is in my signature and I'll be up for quite a while still.

You can put neosporin on it providing it is NOT the kind with pain reliever in it. Without the ecollar, the pain reliever kind can make his tongue go numb and he could bite it.

Update: First off I need to thank Dancing for speaking with me at 3:00 in the morning. She is one terrific person. She calmed me down because I was a wreck. She just told me to breathe. Once I finally started breathing and calmed down a bit we were off to making the e collar. Now I have never even attempted to make the e collar. She walked me through it in a breeze. She was very thorough in her explanation on what to do. I take my hat off to you Dancing. Trying to explain how to make an e collar to a newbie. lol.We had a couple of laughs.

So the e collar is made. Now the fun part was trying to put it on him.The first 4 tries were no success. He kept getting out of it. Didn't have it tight enough. So I made it tighter and tighter but he kept getting out of it. He was so good. He actually didn't even move the first four times..It amazed me. Now after the 4 times he started trying to get away. He was really stressing now. So I decided not to try again. I just held him until about 7:00 am, then my daughter took over. Didn't want him licking or biting his foot.

Was at the vet this morning at 9:30. This is what was done.
Physical Exam:
WEIGHT- 95g(with bandage),EENT-no ocular or nasal discharge, mm pink/moist,HL-no obvious masses palpated,INTEG-lesion on right hind foot. No ulceration, bleeding or obvious infection. Small mild lesion on the left hind foot but asymptomatic.
Recommended: bandaging the limb and out-patient care with anti-inflamatories.
TREATMENT: a soft bandage was gently applied to the right limb leg. The toes were left exposed.
MEDICATION: Metacam
RECOMMENDATIONS: Rooster's bandage may fall off. If this occurs, you may try using the e collar to prevent him from licking at his paw. If this is too stressful, do not use the e collar. Please monitor Rooster's toes daily to be sure there is no swelling, discoloration or foul order. If you notice any of these signs please call us and let us know. So a $141.00 later and out I went.

O.K. so I gave him his oral medicine through the syringe. I don't know what's in the medicine but once he tasted it he took both his hands wrapped it around the syringe and out came his tongue. lol. He loved it. So I won't have any problems with him taking his medicine. I am holding him right now because if I let him go, he goes right for the bandage. I have a huge headache, still haven't slept and I am at work.

Have a re-check on Wednesday morning for his foot, and Sookie will be going in also for a well check.

Good job!

Caution on the Metacam. I would not use it for more than three days as it can be very hard on the liver. Metacam is an anti-inflamitory (much like Advil) and does/should help with the pain too. Glad he likes it though, that will make it MUCH easier!

I'm not sure if one of Denise's e-jackets would help or not, or if he would still be able to reach his foot. I'll call and ask her about it this evening after she is off work.

I again want to commend you on being so watchful with your gliders. That is something that might have been overlooked had you not been paying such close attention to your glider. The licking could have quickly turned to chewing and serious damage.

Hopefully with the metacam it won't bother him and he'll leave it alone. He isn't going to like the bandage though and will probably keep pulling it off. Make sure you keep an eye on him and keep us posted on his progress.

You sure showed me last night how good of a glider slave you are. KUDOS!

I am going to look up the metacam so I know everything about it. And I'm going to buy an e collar and an e jacket anyway. When you speak to Denise please let me know so I can get one. Thanks again. He's sleeping now so he's not touching it. But as soon as he wakes up he goes for it. And won't stop unless I distract him with some yogurt or treats. So it's the holding game for right now. And I love it by the way. lol. More time with my fuz butt. He is letting me pet him all over. It's great. Gotta love it.

Teresa, I have used the ejacket several times after neuters. They had no problem getting to their feet. It was awkward but they managed. I'd say an ecollar is prob the best bet here. Can you get some Vetricyn VF? It's awesome for healing!

I figured he was going to be able to get to his feet. If he continues with licking it I might not have a choice. He goes back Wednesday for the re-check. I'll see what the vet says and see how its healing. And the Vetricyn VF is already ordered. I did that this morning.

Here are some pics with his bandage on: Poor baby

Went to the vet and they took the bandage off. He said there were still some redness on the bottom still but should heal very nicely. He sarted licking his foot as soon as the bandage came off and I got a little nervous. But after the first initial licking he stopped. Thank god. The vet said to just watch him to see how he does. So he's been good so far. And he's been walking on it fine. Still watching him until it is completely healed. The vet said he is one unbelieveable sugar glider. He was so good. Rooster just sat there while the vet took the bandage off and checked him out. He was a good boy. He said that his color was great. Fecal exam came out negative. Healthy overall. 92g was his weight.

On another note, took Sookie in for her well check and she did great also. Fecal came out negative. The only thing was her coloring on her stomach. It's a little stained. So I told him I didn't know about her background and didn't know her diet overall. So with the HPW and the BML diet her coat should start to change with time. She weighs 68g. She's a little small for her age he said. Almost 7 months old. So hopefully she will start to put on some weight.

So both my babies are healthy and going strong.

I'm so happy to hear that Rooster is feeling better! Poor little guy! He looks pitiful with that bandage on his leg. Give him plenty of extra treats, Mama. smile

I'm glad Sookie is doing well, too! When you say HPW and BML, does that mean you're giving them both diets?

Rooster's little foot got a bit raw, probably from the sandpaper in the wheel. It wasn't serious BECAUSE he has such a great mom that saw something was wrong and did everything right and right away to keep it from getting bad and keeping him from self mutilating it.
