Misty, I have not heard of HLP affecting the front legs. Do you have a bit more information for us? Have you taken her to the vet? Please contact Val Jackie_Chans_Mom She will be able to help you. A slow onset of HLP is often due to diet, while a sudden onset is due to other issues such as bacterial infection or parasites. HLP is treatable if it is caught early, and needs to be diagnosed and treated by a vet.

Yes, Metabolic Bone Disease can affect any bones. It tends to visibly affect the biggest bones first, which is why we see it in the hind limbs most often, but it can affect any bone.

So, my question is what is the treatment for HLP? Is this treatment only something the vet can treat?

Yes. A proper vet visit (with x-rays and sometimes bloodwork) is required to diagnose MBD/HLP. Other tests are required to determine the cause of the MBD and then treatment is required for the cause. Here is much more info: http://thesweetspot.forumotion.net/t1231-hlp-mbd-treatment-and-cure

I don't think its HLP is what my girl has cause her issue started all of a sudden with NO warning... I will be taking her in tomorrow to see the vet... But what happened is she woke up the other night a little clumsier then normal next night she lost all movement of her fingers on both front hands. her tent test is good she is eating lots and I am making sure of it she is not losing weight she is a 106gram glider her coat is healthy looking her pee and poo is normal in color she is on HPW PLUS diet with fruit and veggies she is jumping fine and using her back legs perfectly she still runs on her wheel but not as fast as she use too her cage is slit up in to several levels with lots of hammocks incase she climbs up and falls the bottom of cage is padded with fleece incase she falls pouches top to bottom and on floor level where she is currently staying at the moment Her cage mate seems to not be affect in any way she just can't grip with her fingers anymore no swelling, no discoloration, no super long nails they are all trimmed and she does not seem to be in any pain at all she lets me feel her hands and move her fingers and message her hands and it doesn't bother her she seems to like it.... o and when she sets on her back legs to to eat she loses balance and falls forward and lays on her elbows and eats the food she has in her hand and she holds her food like if she is praying with it, that describes best on how she eats with no movement in her fingers. I hope the vet can figure out what this is tomorrow I am super worried and I can't take my mind or eyes or hands off her I just want to love on her and let her know its ok...

It could be a toxin, as well - I remember reading about similar symptoms in other gliders (they stopped using their front feet and/or lost grip) and in some of those case it was an environmental toxin, so worth checking with the vet about as well as possible dietary or infectious causes. On the environmental toxin side - have you introduced anything new into their living environment recently, new toys, new dishes, how old is their cage (is it pvc coated wire, mesh, or???). Just some things to think about. Please let us know how the vet visit goes when you can, we will all be thinking of the two of you.

If the gliders are on the HPW diet... do not see how this could be HLP from a dietary issue. With two gliders in the same cage... with the other glider appearing not to have symptoms... it would seem questionable as to the illness being linked to a toxin. Could be a bacterial problem/parasitic problem that is causing the HLP like symptoms with loss of balance and muscle weakness. Please update this thread once you see your vet. Good Luck and sending Get Well Wishes to your little friend.

Please do let us know what the vet says. It's important in case something like this happens again in the community. Good luck.

Both of my vet office's can't see her till later this week the soonest is on Wednesday at 1:30pm she has not gotten any worse and seems to be getting some of her energy back but to answer some of the questions above there cage I just got last year it is a Exel cage so it's powder coated wire... no new stuff in there cage they haven't used before I plan on contacting Val here as soon as I get a moment to do that ~I moved Tiva and her mate to my back up cage that I know is sterile and put all fresh bedding in and made sure to make it super padded in case she falls and there is lots of hammocks to catch her if she trys to climb. today I am going to take apart there huge cage and clean it really well in case there is some thing toxic on it that may be causing the complications for her. Still her cage mate seems healthy and normal thank you everyone for your thoughts... Sugarlope ; you said you read threads before with similar issues of loss of grip in front hands, do you have a link to it I would love to read it and see what happened with those gliders...

UPDATE! Tiva update; vet did a full exam, she determined that Sativa does NOT have any parasites or bacterial illnesses. But Sativa does have neurological issues, balance issues, dizziness, basically all signs of toxicity. which the vet is questioning the culprit to be a all natural flea spray I used on the carpets last Monday, I did clean the cage down afterwards but I must have missed a spot the flea spray says its animal safe but it's not all animal safe, the clove oil and cinnamon oil found in it can cause the symptoms above but those symptoms can lead to liver failure. Tiva was given a injection of Atropine to help clear her body of all toxic-ens. I must give her the rest of the injections over a 3day period and then see how she is doing... the neurological issues may or may not clear up, but only time will tell.. but if these shots don't seem to help then the next step is probably testing to see if her liver is working correctly. The doctor didn't want to over stress her by doing a lot of test today so we are taking it one step at a time.. Tiva has gained weight since this has happened she is now at 110grams she was 106grams when her issues started on 8/11/11 I will keep everyone posted on her condition, now all I can do is wait and keep my fingers crossed for her that she will pull through this and hopefully be able to have the use of her fingers again. I feel so stupid right now for putting my baby in this situation, if my dang dog didn't get flea's in the house I would have never sprayed the carpets

Don't beat yourself up, there is no way you could have known. I am praying that the neurological symptoms will clear up completely. Thank you for being so brave to post this, I am sure a lot of members will learn from this.

Tiva update;
I have good news my girl is improving a little more in her grip but she can hold her grip for about a minute before her hands get weak and she lets go but either way she is at least trying, and her strength is much better in her arms, back & legs she is able to squirm out of my hands lol this makes me happy but it still does not get her out of the woods yet, still the chance of liver failure or damage so one day at a time but today is a day to celebrate with her <3

I'm glad she is doing better! Don't blame yourself, accidents happen! She sounds like a very strong-willed glider.

UPDATE MY BABY GOT'S HER GRIP BACK 100% now to wait till the vet opens so I can tell them last night I put her back in her huge cage to see what would happen, and she scared me at first cause she slept in so late but it was worth it I guess cause she climbed to the top over and over and was hanging from toys, hammocks, running and jumping and grabbing with ease like if she never lost it and she was so FAST! over all improvements seen energy back to 100% grip 100% frisky self 100% strength 100% +plus some bright eyes to bushy tail hands are warm again grooming herself much much better and now she is getting her snuggle on with her cage mate with chirps and hisses lol now today is a day to celebrate even more, gonna have to find a nice treat while I am in town just for her

Oh my gosh, I am SOO happy to hear that she is doing better! Sorry I haven't gotten back to your post sooner. As for the toxin threads, I can't find any that I was thinking of specifically, but, I was thinking of threads like the plastic wind spinners ( toxic coating) where the glider did better once the toxin was removed. As well as some of the recent cage posts, again, if the glider(s) were removed early, they started doing better. Gliders are pretty resilient little ones and I am just so glad that she has shown so much improvement!

I'm so happy to hear that your little one is doing better! I thought I'd throw in here, my friend used to live with her Mother-in-Law who owned 4 or 5 cats. The cats had fleas and even though she tried diligently to keep them out of her living area, the fleas made it in. She did some looking around online and found a site that said fleas have a serious aversion to lavender. She tried it and said the issue cleared up very quickly. I just checked the Safe Woods and Plant Toxicity chart and it says lavender is glider-safe. So it's something you could consider in the future.

They also do not like lemon grass or eucalyptus. Also, get a few flea traps. They work great to catch the fleas in the home.
thank you for the advice Jill I will be putting all of these to use euc will be here in 3 days and sugarlope it is ok if you ever see a thread similar I would love to read in the future but thank you for trying to find the old thread *HUGS* o and last night I wish I could have found my camera cause Tiva was obsessed with bracelets putting them over her body and tail carrying them all over the cage. I would take the bracelets away and she went over to the chain of C- links I had hung in there and she was trying to tail carry the chain around lol so I gave the bracelets back and she just went bonkers it was so good to see her excited to be able to play and grab onto the bracelets to put around her chubby little body so she can carry them
