Here's the whole story: I agreed to glider-sit for a friend of mine while she and her mom were on vacation. Earlier this past week (as this all started on the 8th) Rocky had had a leg amputated. The vet that the owners took her to isn't the most knowledgable vet when it comes to gliders. So when Rocky began mutilating one of her rear feet, the vet decided to cut it off. That was Monday. Friday, the owners left. Saturday, I went to chck on her, feed her, and all that. She had pulled the bandage away from her wound, and had chewed out all of the staples that were holding her together. I freaked out, along with a neighbor who had come by to feed the cat. I called every vet in this area, and either they weren't open, or didn't deal with "those things" (I had to bite my tongue with that particular woman...). So I wound up going to Springfield, which is an hour to an hour and a 1/2, depending on traffic, away. They gave me two choices: Either have her put down, as the infection was so bad, or pay for the surgery. I paid. A lot. Luckily, the vet technician who was helping me has 4 gliders of her own, so she knows something about these critters. I left, and got a call a few hours later form the vet. The surgery went fine, Rocky was recooping nicely, and even eating (she didn't really eat Friday night). And now Rocky's living with me for the next week until the owners get home and I can ask to keep her.
Now here's the thing - The amputation was probably pointless. Animals chew on things that hurt, they're trying to get rid of it. So she was in pain when she was chewing her foot off. The vet they took her to didn't really check anything. She saw how bad the foot was, and decided the best thing to do was to amputate. Rocky may have a spinal injury or something to that effect, because her other foot doesn't work real well either. But there was no X-ray done. the vet told the owners that she had extensive nerve damage (let's see, she's chewed her foot practically off, so I'd say that's a ringer...). When I took her to the emergency vet in Springfield, the vet told me that she had a seriously nasty infection, and a great deal of dead tissue that had to be cut away. So now she's got an e-collar on to keep her from attacking the staples again, and she looks pathetic. She's a sweet baby, a complete lovebug (complete with the love bites) and I've fallen in love with her. Especially after spending over $400 on her so far. But that's her story. She's doing so much better now, not lethargic like she was, and eating like she hasn't eaten in a week. She was being fed babyfood and dry trail mix, along with a few fruits and veggies, and now she's on the BML and seems to be perking up. Just please have your vet really check things out before making a big decision like taking off a leg. And don't doubt all the people in the world - There are some of us who will do anything to keep an animal alive. Even if it isn't theirs

I am pretty much speechless - that little guy didn't have to lose his foot (leg) and ......

Well, kudos, hugs, kisses, etc to you for coming to his rescue!!! Keep him with you! Rocky deserves the love and attention you obviously have to give him!

OOps- sorry, Rocky - you little babe, you! ***feeling horrible for calling her a boy***

Punky,
I am just so happy that you were there for poor Rocky and were able to help her in all the ways you have. You are a true glider angel! I hope Rocky continues to heal quickly, and keeps progressing, and that her other people realize what you have done and allow her to stay with you forever. Kudo's to you! You are a wonderful person!!!!

Thanks guys I was so close to tears on my way home Saturday - I was positive she wouldn't make it through the surgery. The vet was afraid to put her under, she was so far gone. But she made it! She's such a doll baby, and she's getting more active by the day. She even bit me today lol, not something to usually be happy about, but it's something as opposed to the nothing she was doing when I took her to the vet!

I am so happy for Rocky!! Good for her! She obviously has a strong will to live or else she wouldn't have made it. I think it's great that you did what you did for her; and it's horrendous what the vet did. When I think of all of those people out there who are trained to help but care more about money than animals, it makes me so mad!!!! However, it is people like you who help restore my faith in humanity. Good for you!!! And, you spell your name the same way I do!!!! I will keep both Rocky and you in my prayers tonight.
God Bless you-

Thanks again for all the wonderful prayers She's doing so well now. She bit the vet this morning. It turns out she has HLP, and now that she's on the BML, her other foot is beginning to show signs of movement and her tail is starting to move some. It really wasn't needed to cut her foot off. But *sigh* when a vet doesn't do an X-ray... grrr...

What a wonderful person you are...and what a sweet glider!!!

Have you talked to your friend, and are you going to be able to keep the little angel? I'm hoping they will let you keep her because of all you've done for her. Keep us updated and give Rocky a big kiss from me and my gliders!

I'm now to the point that if they tell me I can either have my money back or keep the glider, I'm keeping Rocky. I'm a little bit of an animal fanatic And I've fallen in love with her, as much heck and she gives me.

Well, I'm able to keep here (most of ya'll probably read that in the thread in Glider Talk), and I just want to thank everyone for the prayers and words of hope. Lord knows I needed to hear it. She's doing wonderfully, she's moving her other back leg and curling her tail, and there's been some muscle build up and calcium build up in her hind end. Maybe one day she'll walk like a (semi)normal glider again Thanks again guys!!

This morning she pushed off her e-collar, which I had thought was pretty tight on. She ripped out her stitches, and had mutilated herself to the point of no return - She basically ripped out her rectum. There was blood all over her lower half, and she was leaking feces pretty badly. I took her to an emergency vet up in Springfield, and the doctor said they could do the surgery, and while she would live through the surgery itself, there was a 'slim to none chance of her making it afterwards.' So I had her put down. I can't tell you how much I cried, and I'm still crying now as I type this. I tried so hard to keep her going, but I'm now thinking that there was another underlying problem. She didn't go for the stitches where her leg used to be, only the stitches where her cloaca and what not were. The doctor gave her a sedative first, and I held her while she fell asleep. While she was falling asleep though, she kept licking my thumb while I pet her, I guess letting me know that it was ok. Maybe thanking me for not letting her go through anymore. She's better off now though, I know that. She's playing with all four legs, and nothing hurts, right? But I can't help but wish she was still here. In the short period of time I had her, I fell in love with her. Honestly, she became my favourite. And I miss her terribly. Thank you guys for all of the kind words while I was trying to get her to keep for my own, though the time was too short. I'm not going to be around for a few days - It's sounds stupid, but I'm really torn up by this. I almost hyperventilated in the docs office I was crying so hard while she died. But thank ya'll again.

Oh hunny, I am so so so sorry.......(((((((((((((((((hugs))))))))))))))) I know it hurts so right now, you went thru so much together, but try to think of her as she is now, healthy and happy and whole. She had so much more in her last few weeks than ever with your care and love for her, and that is the best gift she could ever have gotten. She will be your little angel now, and always a part of your heart, and death cannot take that from you.

I am just sitting here crying here with you, I am so, so sorry

This little glider has given you love that was unconditional. Rest well tonight...that Rocky is free of pain and is whole again. Her brief time with you was close to heaven and now she is there as you helped her cross to the other side which was the greatest gift an owner can give their pet when the time is right.

I hope you will find another little glider...much like Rocky...who will grab your heart as she did.

Take Care.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Try to take comfort in the fact that you know she's happier and pain free where she is. She's up there gliding and having fun, now. You did all that you could for her while she was with you and you did what she needed in the end. Sending (((hugs))) your way.

I'm so sorry about Rocky, Punky. I know she'd already made a special place in your heart, and even though she's no longer physically with you, that place will stay.

You tried so hard for her. You are a great mom, we know it, you know it, and she knows it.

Sending (((((((((((((((HUGS)))))))))))))))))) your way.

Breaks my heart to hear about Rocky. They can really get your
love in a short period of time. I think gliders are smatter
than we give them credit. They seem to know when we are trying
to help them and when we love them. At least Rocky had the
comfort of knowing she had someone who loved her deeply.

Thanks for the sentiments guys. I've never put an animal down before, so between that and how attached I got to Rocky, and how badly I wanted her to live... i'm still a little puffy around the eyes I think Felix realized I was having a bad day. Last night when I brought he and Laci food, he jumped on my hand and licked me. That's the first and only time he's shown any sort of 'like' towards me. Unfortunately, I started crying again. I'm a sap when it comes to animals. But thanks again, and Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

Oh, Meghan! Tears are just streaming down my face. I'm so terribly sorry for your loss. Rocky loved you deeply, and definitely felt your love for her, in the short time you cared for her. She'll always be with you (and us), having touched our hearts as she has.

I am soooo sorry for your loss of Rocky. She IS in a much better place now even though that doesnt make YOU feel better. You made a very VERY UNSELFISH decision while you were at the vets office and I applaud you for that. Most of the time we are too selfish to let our loved ones go cause we know the pain that we ourselves would have to face and instead we cause them to go through more pain just to appease ourselves. You making that decision has proven just how deep your love for that little angel was. I know the pain of loosing one to making the choice of helping them along. We had a sheperd/wolf for over 15 years, battled cancer with him along with many other problems and in the end he loved us so much he wouldnt let go and we had to take him to the vet to be put down. He was in extreme pain, all of his bodily functions had stopped literally overnight and in the am all he could do was lift his head, nothing else worked. So my heart definetly goes out to you in this time. You will surely be in my prayers.
