I'm watching over my girlfriends sugar gliders at the end of the month till she gets back from Fl, and she insists they get as much attention as possible (No problem! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> )

So, I was thinking a fun way to pass the time and play with them is to teach them a trick or two.

Now, I've taught our family dog how to bark, play dead, hop on her hind legs and roll over. But gliders aren't your average household pet, and I don't expect them to respond in the same manner.

Has anyone here ever "taught" their glider how to do anything on command? I figured it would make sense to teach them something that has been successfully taught to another glider.

I think it would be AWESOME to get them to bark on command, jump, do something they do naturally all while havin fun.

Any ideas?

Hi, I've been working on teaching my little ones to "jump" They do have a tendency to learn, however, they have a short attention span, but rewarding them with a treat, a kiss, and a praise they will repeat the game....I will place one or both in a high place, stand back, clap my hands together and say "jump" they will align themselves, focus on the target and away they go.....toooo cute, then they will run down my leg and back up into the tree and do it again thier gliding distance is increasing along with confidence. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/heartpump.gif" alt="" /> Also, I've got them to "stand up on their hind legs" to get thier mealies it is way to cute to see them both standing just as straight as a stick after they've eaten a mealie they will stand up for another one! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yelclap.gif" alt="" />

Yes, I have taught one of mine to jump, too. Both of mine respond very well to praise. However, they are independant little critters and do what they want to do when they want to do it. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

I started a link about this a few days ago. Four of my gliders "wink" on request. They do it for me, and other people too. It is so funny. Here is a video of Savannah winking.
Savannah Winking
They also jump when we ask them to, and come to their names.
They moved the link to page 2 post #596111 "smart Gliders- tell me what your gliders can do." I know they are a lot smarter than we give them credit for. I bet we could come up with some pretty cool tricks if we put our Glider-Loving minds together. LOL

Same here!

Did she usually wink on her own, and slowly respond to you asking her, or was this something you taught her to do?

I can't wait to get them! (Peeka and Boo)

I think one of the firts things I'm going to do is have them respond to their names. I know it's not really a "trick" , but it would be a very important step developing a connection between verbal commands and actions.

I'm thinkin the best way to do this is to only say their names when I bring them food (as they would come to you during feeding time anyway). Then slowly start saying their names before I even show them food, and treat them when they come to me. Over time they will learn when their names are said, it means "Hey, over here guys! Thatshould be pretty simple.

Next, I thought it would be REALLY cool to teach them how to fetch. I'm not sure how I'm going to go about doing this, as I haven't seen any of them play in that manner. They have taken a liking to a feather on a string (like what you get for cats). Boo will chase it if you run it in circles on the floor, really cute to watch! Maybe I'll try and put that together with something else to have him do something exciting to watch <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yelclap.gif" alt="" />

Any other trick ideas?

The winking thing started with my Savannah. I would hold her looking at me and she would stare up at my face. When I talked to her she would start to mimic me by moving her mouth. Then I'd mimic her when she was eating (which I love to watch and to hear them "eep eeep eep". So I decided Id try winking at her, and I saw her close both her eyes at me. So I kept doing it and when she winked only one eye, I just flipped and kissed her and gave her a treat and was laughing. I called the kids over and she did it again. I think she loves the reaction she gets. When we go out, people love to look at her so I started asking people to ask her to wink and wink at her, and she just did it, and again, loved the reaction. I had to see if it was just a fluke so I decided to try it with the other gliders (all Savannah's daughters). Sydney winking
The way I know for sure they are smart is that the baby (OOP May 14th) does it on command too.

Ella winking Thats why I started the post I wanted to see other people try to teach theirs. The "trick" to it is to have them at a calm time. When they are able to just sit and look up at you calmly, eating a treat maybe, but you need their full attention.
All my babys know their names and respond when I call them individually. I did it exactly the way you said SuggahDaddy with food treats. We feed mealworms out of the cage as special bonding time every day, and call their names as we feed them the worms one at a time.
I just added video of them on my photobucket site. go to www.photobucket.com the username is sugar_glider and the password is vanna.

That is the cutest thing I have ever seen!

As far as my glider "tricks", both of mine will glide to me or my boyfriend on command, I tap on my shoulder and they will glide to the spot I am tapping.

I have been working on getting them to bark on command, but have not yet been successful. I have started by saying "speak" between barks and then praising them. The only small success I have had was them barking a little longer than usual....they don't bark very often so its hard to practice with them....but ya never know, they seem to enjoy the game when I do get the opportunity.

My bf thinks I'm nuts, I have to agree.

If you are Nuts than Im the whole nut tree! LOL. My husband really isnt into the Gliders, which is fine because I doubt I'd share anyway. In fact my kids each have their own Gliders. Diva belongs to my 12 yr old daughter, Cinnabon is my rescue male that I couldnt give up. He is HUGE (not fat) and is my oldest sons (age 15) Glider. My youngest has Sydney, and Savannah owns me. Our newest addition is CinnerElla, and I had two people who wanted one of Savannahs joeys, so she was supposed to have a home, but I fell in love head over heels...and the day she waved to me (by accident) Ella wavin picture I decided she was staying. Vanna has another joey in pouch (maybe twins, but this time I cant keep them or my husband will likely move me into the glider cage. that may be where I belong anyway.LOL.

This is SHESADIVA...I just wanted to let everybody know I finally got my own sign in. I was using an account I set up for both my daughter and myself, so I'll be using this (thegliderlady)login from now on both here and at the USGN.
Is anyone trying to teach the "wink?" If so, how is it going?

In my searching for a mystical/mythical name for my little one, I came across this...

" Mitmit " - A mischievouse Hungarian Being, quite small, whose favourite game is to wink at people from the bushes.

HAHA!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/roflmao.gif" alt="" /> I thought it was cute at the time, but now that I know you can train them to wink - oh, man, am I going to have fun with this!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/multi.gif" alt="" /> Thanks for sharing the videos!! So cute!!

Guess what??? After I replied to your post, I went and pulled out one of boys. And he was calm. Since it was during the day. he was staring at me and I told him to wink as I winked at him. He just stared at me and did it back!!!! lol <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/roflmao.gif" alt="" /> I asked him again like 4 times and each time he did it!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/multi.gif" alt="" /> I am going to try again during the day when they are calm again, to see if he will do it again. It is the cutest thing in the world! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/heartpump.gif" alt="" /> I think everyone should try it to see if you have a winker! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

This isn't a real trick per se, but it's cool to me nonetheless! I just managed to potty train my second glider. I take a small travel cage into the tent with me and they go in that. I would just toss the poopies that would accumilate into the cage. They eventually got the picture and now use it instead of me! Yay!

So, I'd definately say they are trainable. They probably won't fetch but I'm sure they can learn to do little things <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yelclap.gif" alt="" />

Suggiekiss.... I am so happy to hear this. It not only prooves they are intelligent but that they can learn to do behaviors not normally part of their natural routine. Thank you so much for trying this because now we can tell with 100% certainty that Gliders respond to praise, love and treats.
As for the trick part, I dunno, but we teach our dogs to sit, fetch or lay down on command and although these are all natural behaviors the dog will do on their own, we only lable them "tricks " when we get them to do these things on command. To me winking on command is a "trick" but whatever label we put on it I think winking is a very cool trainable behavior.
My gliders are also potty trained to a point. As soon as I get them out of the cage I walk over to the trash can and they walk to the end of my hand and do thier business. When they are done they walk up and into my shirt or their pouch and off we go, Savannah comes out of wherever she is and goes to the end of my hand when she needs to go potty wherever we are but the others arent quite at that point yet.

our potty training is just so they potty before i start carrying them in my shirt for the day. when we started *potty training* I would take Savannah on the edge of my hand and over the trash i'd kind of hold the end of her tail up which helped speed the process so the droppings actually drop. now when i take her out and go over to the trash can she automatically goes...my one tip is when training get the glider out of cage when they are just waking up or still sleeping, that way you know they will need to go potty then take them to where you want them to eliminate.
