My male glider (Bilbo) also has a penis retraction problem . I doesn't seem to bother himI have tried to keep it moist. He was retracting it after I moistened it, but tonight I noticed that it is dark on the end. He is urinating and pooping with no problem. After reading some of the posts about SM and necrotic tissue, I have decided to take him to the vet in the morning. I have only had to take my gliders to the vet for checkups and periodontal problems before. So, this is new to me. Anyone have any idea what the cost would be for partial penis amputation?

Hi, I moved your post to its own thread so it doesn't get lost.
When you say the end of his penis is dark, how much of it is dark?
Has he shown any signs of messing with it?
Has he made any strange noises while paying attention to it? Such as a combo of a hiss/crab/cry like he is fighting with another glider but the only one there.
If so, get him into an ecollar right away.

If any part of his penis is discolored (either white or black), it needs to be removed by a vet as soon as possible. Also, have the vet run a C&S not only on his urine and stool, but also on the tissue from his penis. Also, I would suggest a blood draw to check liver and kidney function. I have lost 2 gliders in the past month or so and thier illness was brought to front by necrotic tissue on thier penis. This could be the start of a very serious problem and your vet needs to make sure he covers every possible angle...

He hasn't been messing with it. And he made no sounds when he peed and pooped on me last night. : ) Four days ago I was woke up by his crabbing really, really loud. It turns out he had caught his foot in some loose threads in his pouch and couldn't free himself. I got him loose and he seemed to be okay. The next day was when I noticed his penis being out all the way. I didn't have any KY so I just splashed some water on it. It retracted all the way. The next night it was the same thing, but it didn't seem to retract all the way - this time a little bit stayed out. When I checked him later in the day it was still out a little bit and I put more water on it. The next night (last night) I noticed it was dark at the very end. I called the vet this morning and have an appointment later today. I will keep you posted on Bilbo's progress. Thanks for the posts.

I just returned from the vet. Bilbo had to have a partial penis amputation. The vet said that the next 72 hours will be critical to his recovery. I had to move the girls' cage to another room so he won't get stimulation by their sounds. The vet also said that the muscle that retracts the penis is swollen and she gave him a shot for it -- she said that if the swelling doesn't go down he still won't be able to retract all the way. She really scared me the way she talked. She also made me feel like it was my fault -- I was really upset before I went there -- and more upset when I left. She is a very informed vet for sugar glider -- but her bedside manner needs a little work. The vet said that his foot is a little infected but it will be okay with the prescribed antibiotics. The vet also prescribed pain meds for him. I will keep you posted on Bilbo's progress. Harriet

I'm so sorry he had to go through that. It isn't your fault. It happens to the very best glider moms. It happens to the worst too but it is only the good ones that care enough to seek vet attention for their little gliders. You are doing good. The pain meds should help. Have an ecollar handy and ready just incase you need to put it on him. If he shows any attention to the penis or his foot, don't risk it, put the ecollar on him right away. It is better for him to be a little stressed and uncomfortable then for him to self mutilate and do more damage. Once he has healed, I would suggest having him neutered so that he doesn't have the hormones raging that could cause this to happen again. It will be a long 72 hours for you. If you need to talk, you can call me anytime. My home number (when I'm not on the computer) is 913 471 4993 and my cell number (but I get iffy coverage) is 913 544 8090. If you have any questions or just need someone to talk to, don't hesitate to call.

Thanks Teresa -- I really appreciate that. I will probably be calling you --- you seem very knowledgeable about sugar gliders. Around here there aren't many owners. At the vet today the nurse said that they see on average 2-3 gliders a week. BUT when I went to pay my invoice -- 3 of the nurses there wanted to know what was in the pouch, they all said they had never seen one. Also, the nurse and doctor said that the diet I am giving my gliders is not good enough. Every night I feed them: a meat, yogurt and fruit/veggie. I also leave a few pellets or dried fruit in the cage all the time. I explained that I had tried to feed the leadbeaters diet and none of my gliders would eat it. I told the doctor that I tried the leadbeaters 2 days in a row and offered my gliders nothing more -- and they would have starved if I just kept giving it to them. I have tried a few of the recipes I found online and they wouldn't touch any of them. When I left the vet they gave me a list of diets to try -- all of them contain egg and that is the ingredient I believe my sugars won't eat. Do you have any suggestions? Another thing the vet mentioned was full spectrum lighting for the sugars -- she said that they should receive at least 4 hours of this lighting each day. Ever heard of this? Thanks again, Harriet

Well, there are other diets besides BML. Have you considered the Suncoast diet? (zookeeper's secret/ insectovorefare) This diet may work out well for you. Take a look at the diets links and see if you can find a diet that will work for both you and your gliders. As for the full spectrum lighting. No, I don't believe this is necessary (I've had gliders 9+ years) providing that they are in a room that gets natural light during the day (so their internal clocks don't get off). What the vet's concern may have been is the lack of vitamins and calcium in your diet.

Yesterday Bilbo had his final follow-up with the vet and he 'glided' through with flying colors. He is doing really well. But I am sure he's glad I won't have to wake him during the day for his meds. : ) A few days after the surgery I made the Leadbeaters again -- and my sugars still don't like it. They only eat a little bit of it. I have however taken some of the tips from this website and give them mixed veggies chopped really fine -- and they love it. They eat it all. They tended to pick and choose when the pieces were bigger. The same with the fruit. I haven't tried the Suncoast diet yet -- but I will give it a try. I will let you know how it works out for them. Thanks for all the advise. Harriet

That's great news that Bilbo passed his follow-up exam with flying colors. It's great that you took him to the vet when you did. Even though your vet lacks bedside manners, maybe you can add her to the Vets Database (if not already in there). Yes, BML (and even SunCoast) are not the only good diets. There are modifications to BML as well as modifications to the basic leadbeaters mix (e.g., Judie's, PML). You can find these and other good diets on the diet page. Gliders do need a proper blend of all nutrients, including proteins, fruits, veggies, calcium, and vitamins.

Harriet... I noticed you mention him getting his foot stuck in some loose threads, and I was wondering what kind of pouches you were using? Now that Bilbo is fine with his genital problem, I want to make sure that the inside of his pouch has no exposed seams... that can be very dangerous. Please feel free to PM me, if there are exposed seams or rips in your cage pouches I would like to send you a few safer ones.
