I just e mailed an australian vet who owned gliders. his oldest lived 19 yrs he said never feed avocado because it contains glycosyeds a harmful ingredient to gliders in australia they feed for veggies corn, tomatoe, and brocolli we must be doing something wrong in this country for them to die younger. they also feed wombaroo insectivore diet along with fruits no supplements of any kind. thats what the vet did with his gliders.

Any info from this vet on what a good "fattener" might be? My vet says my babies need to put some weight on.. I thought Avacado might be good since it is higher in fat than most other things. I thought Wombaroo and insectivore were two different things?

There is a Wambaroo Insectivore but it's for birds. http://www.wombaroo.com.au/insectivore_rearing_mix.htm

Several Aussie vets have & still are owned by <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/littleglider.gif" alt="" />'s & I have personally spoken with several thru the yrs, amongst other OZ care-takers of "CAPTIVE" <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/littleglider.gif" alt="" />'s & most do not feed supplements, especially in the excess amounts which is instructed to be fed in most USA <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/littleglider.gif" alt="" /> diets.

Wombaroo Insectivore cannot be shipped into the USA at this time. A special import/export permit is required & it would not be cost effective for Geoff - I have spoken with him about this product many times in the past.

The Wombaroo mix has vitamins in it so it is a suppliment. I follow the Healesville sanctuary diet that has a nectar mix that has calcium and vitamins in it. This is used by many zoos in Australia. Our diets are very different than what you guys use. I do think we don't have as many additives and the diets here are more natural. I think sometimes trying to give gliders healthy diets we may go too far and cause health problems. It does seem to be less health issues associated with the more natural diets.

I have fed avacado to my gliders for 3 years now with no problems. It is the pits and the skin that is toxic to gliders and should not be fed and when feeding avacado it should be limited as it is a very fatty food. However, it does contain the good fats and when I had a problem with weight gain on my Bear my vet gave me a recipe to go by and to feed to her, which did include avacado to add weight and it worked wonders. There are also different types of avacados, american, spanish, european ect...maybe the ones in australian are different than the ones here.

I would not jump the gun and state that ALL of them are bad as this could cause a panic.

I'm sure that is the case, Jett. Since gliders are from Australia, it is probably much easier for y'all to get hold of their natural food items. Pockets is well known for her efforts to research just how you guys over in "Oz" feed your gliders, especially the zoos over there.

One of the reasons that Bourbon saw the need to modify the original Leadbeater's staple food to make BML (Bourbon's Modified Leadbeaters) was that the ingredients in it were too hard to come by for the average glider owner in the states. At least that has always been my understanding. I actually don't know the exact recipe for the original Leadbeaters.

As for avocados, I feed them in moderation and my furkids love 'em! That's one of the few foods that I can almost guarantee will be fully consumed by morning if I serve it.

I think if I stopped giving my gliders avocado every once in awhile, it would be the same as if I got cut off from Starbucks (lol) - its an occasional must have for happiness!!

tomatoe, and brocolli boy bet they had some loose stools and gas.

We DO NOT have wild caught gliders. Things are different now. NO one has all the right answers and we do what we can and what is best for the glider.

whoooh a sigh of relief. My little roos love avacado. I dont think they would forgive me if we stopped feeding it once in a while. i mean its like Christmas when they smell that avacado, and they do eat every little drop. I just wish there was a way to save avacado since I feed it so sparingly, I wish I could save it. We arent guacamoli eaters here. Thank you for clearing things up because I was really worried.
