Hi everyone,
I was wondering if there's any way to encourage a glider to tail carry. I know my boy can hold a bracelet with his tail for quite a while, but my female doesn't curl her tail up enough. I've read that you have to find something they want to carry. So far, they've got bracelets, fleece strips and blankies, branches (both with and without leaves), monkeys, and leaves. I don't have access to milk rings personally, though I have asked my students to collect them if they remember (but they're high schoolers, so... haha). Any other ideas for things to provide or strategies to try? Thanks!

I believe that if they are, they are...not sure if there's anything you can do to actually encourage them, other than offering them lots of different things that they would be able to carry around. dunno

I've read that tail carriers tend to teach their joeys to tail carry. Sorta one of those parent taught skills. I've never had tail carriers~ course I only caught zinger carrying anything once lol~ it was mostly in his mouth like a dog lol~

I imagine you might be able to teach a glider to use their tail.. would take time, a strong bond (comfort letting you touch their tail)... and even then they may never get it. I think my zinger has potential. He curls his tail perfect and has superb nesting instinct. My karma corkscrews her tail but takes no interest in toys.. and my twinkie always held his tail straight lol~ as did his parents.. so I'm not so sure they'd have ever got it really.

Depends on the glider I suppose but I've never tried to teach a glider to tail carry so who knows~

I have a stock pile of milk rings I could send you! Different colors even lol! We go through milk like crazy in my house (2 kids~ love their milk smile )

My girl loves plastic ringc. at the dollar store those big clunky rings. I think few gliders carry and most dont. so your lucky to have one..I whould start with reset toys and see if they knock all the toys down.then maybe put all the toys on one side of the cage one night.I dont know i never heard of trying to train them, but anything is worth a try.keep us updated..and good luck

They LOVE their reset toys! All the straws are removed, monkeys are down, etc. Tater has no problem carrying stuff with his tail - he lets me put bracelets on it all the time and he'll hold them for a while, but i can't get him to do it on his own.
SGQ - I would love your milk rings! Pm sent!

It is my belief that tail carrying is an extension of a natural nest building behavior. I don't think that they tail carry just because they can - they do so in order to get things into their pouch/cube/hollow/whatever they sleep in. So, for me, the issue becomes encouraging this nesting behavior.

Here is a thread about just this thing:

Sometimes it take a long time for them to start to carry things. My Magoo started to tail carry after he was 4 yrs old. So just because they do not do it now does not mean then never will.
He takes the plastic bracelets to his pouch.

For gliders I have seen that never seemed to carry anything

I usually take a milk ring and dip it in milk, and give it to each glider in the cage, the gliders that do catch on teach the others.. I have found that they like to keep their own ring and will wear it around their waist so the others can't get it..

Are milk rings safe? I'm intrigued by this thread...I've tried to get my suggies to nest with all sorts of things (leaves, monkeys in a barrel, twigs, plastic rings, etc) and they like playing with them, but usually they just chew on them and eventually it all ends up in the poop tray for cleaning and re-set. I tried a milk ring for the first time tonight and it's a big hit! I'm just worried because it seems like they might be able to strangle themselves with it...especially because one of mine really likes wearing it as a necklace. Are milk rings something I can just leave in the cage and see if they bring it back to the nest, or an adult supervision only kind of toy?

Milk rings are great toys to encourage them. But always snip through them so that they aren't a solid ring and will open if need be. thumb

Okay and maybe this is just in MI, but don't your milk rings have those little ridges on the inside that seem sharp? I keep thinking those would hurt! dunno

I had to cut mine to get it off the milk jug anyway. It doesn't have ridges, although the part where I cut it seems kind of sharp. Suggies didn't seem to mind though, the ends I cut where their favorite part to chew.

Our milk jugs here don't come off in a solid ring like they use to, now they have a ridge where you lift, peel and it comes off already snipped, I guess is the best way to describe it.

I'm going to check this out more carefully tonight. smile

I have a Glider that has his tail curled up all the time! It's super cute but I haven't seen him carry anything yet, though I've caught both of his brothers.

For the last 8 months those were the kind around here too~ (just sent a bunch to rachel) they are softer~ I like them better actually. The last couple weeks I haven't found them anywhere ~ now just the ones that you have to snip and they are a little pokey.. the gliders don't seem to mind though dunno

No pictures, but the milk rings were everywhere in both cages, so obviously they had some fun last night! Tonight in the tent, I'm going to see if i can "persuade" tater to carry. this should be interesting!

Does anyone (Bourbon? smile ) know if soymilk is okay? Or should I just stick to regular? Maybe it doesn't matter.. I wouldn't have thought twice about the difference between the 2 before joining the boards lol~

I really believe that all gliders are tail carriers, you just have to find the right thing for the individual glider to want to carry.

All of my gliders will carry things with their tails. I have given my gliders cat rings (similar to milk rings) for the entire time that I have had them and all of them like the rings enough to carry them around and line their pouch. So I irritate them by taking all of them out in the morning, lol.

Some gliders like milk rings, some like bracelets, some like plastic cookie cutters, some like leaves or flowers (they will even chew them off of the vine), some will even carry plastic men in their tails. Mine like the cat rings and leaves on vines the best. They won't pick leaves up again, they only like to chew them off. None of them will carry bracelets.

I agree with Val, I think their carrying is instinctual (which is why I think they are all capable). They carry because they are lining their pouch with whatever it is, nesting. All of mine carry back to the pouch.
