Hi I'm Kari, I'm new to the world of gliders and thought this would be a good place to come and introduce myself. I got a 1 year old male glider yesterday, I have wanted a glider for years and I finally found my little guy. grin I named his Malcolm (after my favorite show Firefly). He seemed a little shy until I started eating fries and all of a sudden he was my best friend! LOL! I have been looking at a lot of different glider pictures trying to figure out what color my glider is (Ill post pictures soon) but he has dark brown stripes and almost a cream color face with redish sides...any color guesses?
Anyways I cant wait to get to know some people here! ^_^

Hi Kari. Welcome!

Of course, a picture would help us out a lot in order to help you, but what you're describing sounds like staining. Do you know what diet your glider was on before coming to you? What diet do you have him on now? Try to post a pic if you can.

Thanks for all the welcomes! :D I have been trying to get some pictures of him but when he is awake its hard to get him to hold still for long. He got to meet my smallest dog (boston terrier) the other night and although it wasn't love at first sight by the end of the night Malcolm was running around on Luna with no fear!
About the staining (I'm going to be researching more what that is)and what he is eating; he was on pellets and fresh fruit and veggies when I got him so I have kept him on the same diet. He loves strawberries! I also got him some gliderade but it doesn't seem like he really is drinking much. He likes to like my ice cubes if I drinking water.

Pellets? Don't keep your little guy on pellets, it could be the reason for staining and a lot of other future problems, get him on a good diet asap. Some examples of these are HPW (many variations), BML, LGRS. There are more, I just don't know them all. Good job with the fruits and veggies, def keep those!

Also, it would be in your and your glider's best intrest if you got him a buddy asap as well, they are colony animals and lone gliders often self mutilate, over groom, get really depressed/stressed. Just some info you might want to know before something bad happens.

Oh and,

:welcome2: :welcomegc: Hope you have lots of fun times
with your new little boy! Good luck and...

I have been looking at the HPW complete diet. I did a lot of my research on the ASGV.org site before I got my little guy but I really think they are owned by or at least supported by the PP company and they all push pellets. He doesn't seem to like the pellets anyways, he eats all the fruits and veggies but I don't think any of the pellets.

The reason I actually got him is he was bought as a buddy from the last owners glider and they didn't get along, I think that is why his original owner got rid of him too. Poor little guy has been passed around a lot. He even crabs at his reflection in the mirror! lol

I know that the PP are using HPW Complete "glider gravy" but I think that is more of the community trying to convince them that the pellet diet they are currently selling with their babies isn't healthy. When I got Apple from them in Feb. they gave me a free sample of the gravy when I bought her (I was an uneducated impulse buyer) but didn't advise me to buy extra just said it was a treat she would like. I wouldn't say they are involved more than the community is trying very hard to change their practices. At least that's what it seems like to me since getting mine and learning everything they told me seemed wrong. I'm using the HPW Original and she seems to really be doing well. Her poop went from hard black to a normal brown (the vet said that it's because the pellets cause impaction) and her tail and coat are really fluffy. Good luck!

off topic but please do not introduce you glider to any other animals, it is not safe! Not matter how they get along, all it takes is a split second and gliders are very fragile....

I agree with this 100%. No matter how nice your dog/cat (or other animal) is, they still do have instincts. We have seen many posts here where someone's seemingly harmless dog or cat has been introduced to their gliders and tragedy struck. Please rethink allowing your glider to play with your dog.

Here is Mal, he just woke up and was not sure if he wanted to come out yet.

So I bribed him!

I have seen so many pictures of gliders and other pets I just figured that most people would introduce them. It makes sense that they could get hurt though.

After looking more into staining I am convinced he is stained, and here I thought I had a fancy colored glider! LOL!

Awe!! Mal is a doll!

It amazes me how far bribery gets you! I've only had Remi since Monday, but already he pops his head out and investigates when I'm bumping around to see if I have any pine nuts! and I always do! wink

Thanks! He stole my heart as soon as I saw his cute little face pop out of his tent.
I'll have to try the pine nuts, I normally have some at my house because I love them in salads. Congrats on getting Remi! I love how there is such a variety of newbies and veteran glider owners here.

"I did a lot of my research on the ASGV.org site before I got my little guy but I really think they are owned by or at least supported by the PP company and they all push pellets."

You are correct, they and quite a bit of their info are false. They are a phony organization put together by PP. Please do research somewhere else. It's really in yours and your glider's best interest. Sugar Glider Help is a good place as well as the gliderpedia on sugarglider.com. If you gave me a week to sort through all my bookmarks I could probably give you at least 100 glider sites that have some good info, but they would take some time to read... XD

Im a new mommy too smile to Cinammon she was a glider from a lady who was giving me some old tables she had and there I saw her. She said she didn't have time for her and I fell in love. She is sweet, kind of skiddish because the previous owner did not give her much attention. I have been researching alot about sugar gliders and I have been spending alot of time with Cinammon. I just need some help with diet items. I have been giving her a powdered calcium on her food but she does not like it. She wont eat the fruit. Is there any better way to give her the calcium. I know she does not need much because they are prone to a bone disease but I know she needs some in her diet. She loves pecans and cooked chicken. I have recently learned she can eat grub worms.

What about home made toys. I have already made her some pouches and she loves this little cat ball i gave her that lights up. She is in love with that. Any ideas?

That would be great if you have some sites I could research more! I would appreciate it a lot! I felt like I was totally mislead by the (PPP) Perfect Pocket Pets and ASGV sites...lol I thought I was getting a pocket sized dog that would let me know when he had to go potty and go on a napkin...HAHA! Mal showed me real quick he prefers my shoulder to a napkin as a potty (and pretty much every where else). I almost didn't register here because that site seems so official and they said that forums are not a good place to get info...Glad I checked out GC anyways! I have so many tabs and internet pages open all full of glider stuff! LOL My fiancee says I'm obsessing, but I enjoy doing research so I know what is best for my little Mal!

I'll have to sort through themm but sure! I'll send you some of the sites I used. Keep in mind however in each of these there is likely a small piece of false info, it's so confusing. I have yet to find a source completely correct in everything they say.

And I know how you feel, they got me to. For about 2 months I stayed very carefully clear of message boards, but I found some good info on one from google and that's when I began to realize what was up...
