So these adorable little gliders have been living with me since January. I've washed their cage out once and wiped it down a couple times along with changing out the bottom newspaper daily - I have them in a large bird cage with a pull out bottom tray.

I've read about sprays you can put on the toys and cage so cleaning is easier and then the cleaning sprays themselves. I'm wondering what are some typical practices for cleaning the cage and toys. How often do you clean your's and what do you use to clean it? So far I haven't had any health problems but I think I should be doing more than I currently do for some reason.

Generally I'll clean the cage every two weeks with wipe downs in between. I clean the toys and pouches when needed, average every 2 -3 weeks. The drop tray I change out every day as that is where all the food leftovers go and it can soil very quickly.

Water and vinegar is a great mix for cleaning (10 parts water to 1 part vinegar). Some people also use a diluted bleach and water mix (10 parts water to 1 part bleach).

For pouches I wash them in the washing machine, all other toys including exercise wheel go in the bath tub for a soak and good scrub. Make sure to rinse everything very very well.

I clean the pouches every 3 days in the washing mashine with regular laundry soap. I use to use baby laundry soap(dreft). But have been using the regular one one (making sure to watch for alergies)

I clean the pan every 3 days as long as no fruits are in it. I don't want any fruit flies.

I wipe the cage and branches down every day with clorox wipes.

the toys I clean about every week, with a bucket of diswashing liquid, and a tiny bit of clorox.

I take the cage outside for a full hose down about every 3 weeks. Using a bucket with water, diswashing liquid, and a tiny bit of clorox. I scrub down the cage. Getting it all soapy...let it soak in...hose it down....take a rag and make sure i get in every spot...hose it down...check to see if i missed anything, if so wipe it down again...hose it down good...let it dry in the sun.

*they keep their slave very busy*

I clean the cage every other week. On the weeks I don't clean the cage, I clean the pouches with the rest of the laundry. I use the bleach mix that was mentioned before and rotate the cage in my bath tub (apartment living does not provide many options.) While scrubbing. Daily I change out othe newspaper and give the floor and wheel wipe downs with clorox wipes.

Daily (well, maybe every other day) I change out the newspaper and wipe with bleach and water mix. About every four days I take the cage apart and wipe it down, get in all the little nooks and crannies. toys I wipe down about once a week. pouches I change out when they get too smelly. Probably once every week and a half.

Everyone has a different time frame of when they have to clean pouches, and cage. Depending on how many gliders are in a cage and if they are intact, or breeding etc. My males compete with eachother on scenting. So their cage can become smelly rather quickly. My female on the other hand is not smelly at all and I can leave her pouch in for a while.

I change the cloth items every two to three days. I clean her cage once a week.

My baby is a pooper so I don't really have a choice.

OK so I use a corn cob catch in the bottom instead of newspaper. I found that my kids like to rip up the paper and its more of a mess to clean. They don't eat it and it soaks up the urine pretty well. My little girls like to toss it out of their cage so I end up vaccuuming every few days. I scrub the cage once a month and wipe down lots in between. Beds get washed every week with the regular laundry. I have not had to clean toys yet since they play more with eachother and me than the toys. But they are learning. I have a knot thing that I got that they love to untie. Major scrubex are done on the back porch with bucket and greenie weenie. I too live in an apartment and am slave to dog, cat and multi suggies. But the one thing I have noticed as that no matter how much I scrub they have a smell that my hubby calls the "glider smell" and its not bad just sweet. Way better than cat box that is for sure. We pull out the fruit and stuff from the bottom but the tray gets cleaned every 2 weeks. Hope that helps.
