I have had my gliders now for over a year and what a long year it has been. I found out within the first few months that I'm allergic to them so bonding has been as hard on me and it has been on them. My one little guy is doing great... he's sweet, I can hold him, wake him up in the morning... do whatever with him. The other one has been a whole different story. I have worked so hard trying to get him to even let us touch him that it's unbearable. He is a rescue older glider and tonight has been a breaking point. I feel like he is never going to like me. I have done the hand sprays that mask scent, treats, pouches, ect and he is still as crappy as day 1! I don't force him into anything but lately I've been trying to initiate some interaction... nothing crazy just petting him in the pouch and while he's eating a treat. Well he climbed on my hand today and I was like "great this is awesome" then as he walked to the underside of my hand and saw my palm he FREAKED OUT and ripped about 6 holes into my fingers and hand before I could get him off me. I bled very easy and now have scars all over my hand. Should I just give up and let him be him and enjoy my other baby or should I try something new?? HELP!

Okay...thank you.

Do you have tent time with your two? Can you explain what you do when you spend time with them? How have you been working with him?

We tried tent time for a while but Booger (our evil little guy) would lunge at my husband and when I tried he would chase after my feet and bite like crazy. We also have an entire room for them to play in so they can get out and play in a bigger space while we watch a movie or things like that. I tried to carry him around in the carrier when I was home but I work 6 days a week and when I do carry him around he crabs all the time and it scares the other glider (Gizmo). He acts like he's been hit or something when you try to place your hand in the cage to even give him a treat and it's so sad. He always tries to bite any finger he can get his hands on and many times will skip the treat and go right for your thumb.

The poor little one is simply scared. That's it in a nutshell.

First thing - the big room, I don't recommend it, especially for those gliders that are either scared or not bonded. It simply doesn't allow the gliders to learn to trust you. The tent is still better, but it sounds to me like you need to go back to square one with this guy. He needs patience, he needs time. And he needs some one on one time with you. If he's lunging, he feels threatened and he's scared. If he's biting, he's telling you're moving too quickly for him.

All is not lost with him if you are willing to work with him and start at the very beginning, as if he's a new glider in your home. This is what he needs.

Don't give up! Try just sitting by the cage and talking to them through it. Maybe offer a treat through the bars so he can't bite. Scent was a big thing with my little guy. Don't wear smelly soaps or perfumes. I put a different fleece scrap in my bra every day and gave them to him each night and he curled up and slept with them.

I dunno about offering treats through the bars. It's a short term solution, but in the long run it encourages them to bite anything that comes close to their cage- especially your fingers.

Offering treats thru the cage bars generally isn't recommended. Try offering it on the back of your hand while in a fist. Then you don't have your fingers pointing out for them to grab onto. And let them come to you to get it, don't push your hand toward them wink

I agree - feeding through the bars isn't recommended as it does encourage them to bite. And yes, gliders are scent oriented but I also don't recommend you stop using your favorite soaps or perfumes. I make no issue here about other smells and things. If I've been playing with the dog, I don't wash my hands before going to the gliders. After I shower, I use whatever lotion I want to use. For gliders not in quarantine, I go from one cage to another, without washing. None of my gliders have an issue with smells and honestly, you don't want them to. Focus more on patience for your little one - it will get you much further.
