Sugar glider-related art, books & movies?

Hi folks It's been a long, long time since I posted here, as I no longer have any of my suggies. Hopefully soon I can get another one, but it's just not possible right now. (they didn't pass, I just had to rehome them due to really bad, sudden circumstances a couple years ago). I apologize if this is in the wrong forum, but I couldn't find any other area to post this in, so if it needs to be moved that's fine. I'm working on a project right now involving a sugar glider character, and I thought I'd ask if anyone here knows of any sugar glider characters that have ever come about in books, movies or even random art? I've googled it several times and really there just doesn't seem to be much in the way of actual character art or story lines for suggies. I wonder if it's because so many people just don't really know what they are or am I just not looking in the right places? I don't want to do something that's already been done, so I figured this would be the best place to find out if it has been already, and possibly generate some interest in the subject. Thanks for reading & (hopefully) responding

Disney has a sugar glider character named Shandy.
ETA: There is also a book, not sure but I think it features a glider named Kimmy.

Ah ok. Thanks for the replies. I've seen Shandy before. I didn't realize he was a sugar glider. Looks more like a bat. lol. I guess I never investigated it enough. Definitely didn't realize it was a disney character. Kage, I'd love to see your character, and if you'd like to help with this project, that would be great, as I could use all the help I can get with it. That goes for anyone else that is interested in helping out. So, here's the background on this idea. (bear with me, it'll probably get long-winded). I started out with a relatively simple concept. I'm a character artist. I do pencil sketches, 3D sculpting, and clay sculpting (and anything else that inspires me to create original works of art). I wanted to sculpt a little sugar glider in polymer clay, inspired by a little white faced boy who I hand-raised from just a week or two OOP back in Dec. 2008. (some of you may remember me posting about him). His name was Alvin. (Still is, as far as I understand, I just don't have him anymore, miss him a lot, - long story, but I've been told he's doing just fine and is happy and healthy). Anyway, my goal was to give this little sugar glider a cartoonish, caricature style, and from the polymer clay master I could make molds and cast the figure in resin. The idea is to do the same character in various poses. Well, I'm pretty decent with sculpting in polymer, just not at that size (2 to 3 inches tall), so I decided I'd sculpt him in 3D instead, as that is the field I'm most comfortable in, and I could put a lot more detail into it. I can still have the sculpture printed in 3D, and make molds from that, which can be hand painted. But 3D printing is rather pricey, even for a small scale, so I'm not sure how soon I'll actually be able to get him printed. It will happen though. Of course, as with most of my ideas, they never stay very simple for long and in just a matter of days it grew from one little figure sculpt into a whole story concept. I have developed a couple more companion characters - a meal worm and a little girl, but I haven't started sculpting the girl yet. I'm working out ideas for how she'll look. I also don't have a name for my sugar glider yet. I can't name him Alvin, for obvious reasons, and just haven't come up with another fitting name. I've been playing with the idea of Joey, though that is really stale, it might work. I have a basic outline for the story going, I just have to work out details and the other characters. The goal with the story is to educate the audience about sugar gliders, the evils of mill breeders, and generally how unique these little creatures are. Eventually I'll start storyboarding it and grow from there. Right now I'm working on trying to get the actual character sculpt and color scheme finalized. I've painted him with the standard gray and black, just so it's obvious that he's a sugar glider, though I might make him a white face, (since Alvin is white-faced). I don't know how far I'll be able to go with the whole idea of it being a full story. I envision it as an animated film, but that takes a lot of work and time. I went to school for computer animation and am very familiar with how it all works - it's an impossible task for one person. There are avenues though that could bring it all to life, with enough luck and hard work. If I'm ever able to market this idea, I want to donate some portion of any profits to a sugar glider rescue, or use it to establish a sanctuary for them. I'm linking images from my personal website, and I'll keep posting more images on my site as I develop more of the characters. If anyone is interested in helping with this project, you don't have to be a 3D artist. Concept sketches for other characters and storyboarding needs to be done, as well as scripting. I don't want to reveal too much about what I've plotted for the storyline as I'm not sure how safe that would be to post on a forum since anyone could run off with the idea. I can come up with a more private way of communicating the story-so-far with anyone that is interested in helping out though. If I get help, I'll have to come up with some NDAs I guess. I'm never good with the legal stuff.

I kind'a forgot to post the image. I'm still working on details, like his color scheme and smoothing out some areas so this is still very much a work in progress.

This is a great idea! I hope you find other talented individuals to assist you. I wouldn't be much help, though I probably could sculpt a worm for you! That is an absolutely amazing glider!! You are extremely talented!

He is absolutely georgious!!!
Anyway, I was watching the Disney cartoon Anastasia with my granddaughter and low and behold there was a critter that looked astonishingly like a glider who's name was BARTOK. At first I thought he was a white bat, but he has the membrane going from front to back, not at all like a bat. Then at the end of the movie he meets a pink and white girlfriend (that I understand they''ve made another movie about). Ok so much for trivia today.

Awe, thanks everyone for all the great comments on this little guy. It's very much appreciated and encouraging.
I will post some pictures of his mealworm friend soon. I'm still working on his legs and trying to make adjustments to his mouth. As for him becoming a real-life sculpture, I'm still working out the details on that too. If there's enough people interested I can give pricing info soon, just send me a PM if you're interested.

Bryan, Please pm, me when you get the chance. I really like your ideas and I think my friend that is a member of the Disney family will to. I would like more info on this idea...but I may be able to get you in contact with them, depending on how far you want to go. I do not take much to them...so you would have to be serious, and willing to work your bum off. I also pm'd you.

Hi everyone - sorry it's been so long since I posted here.
I wasn't intentionally ignoring anyone's posts or PM's, so please don't think that.
I'm still working on this project. The bad news is, my hard drive crashed and I lost everything. Not just this sculpture but everything I've done in the last 3 years. (nearly 400gb worth of content). My bad for not being punctual on backing up my work, especially with how many hard drives I've been through the last few years. They just don't seem to like me.
Currently, I have someone trying to do data recovery on it, but the results aren't too promising at the moment, and I can't afford what it costs to send to a pro data recovery service.
So I'm left with having to resculpt him (and many other models I've worked on). But that's okay because I still have the reference images and can make corrections and adjustments on things I wasn't too happy with the first time around.
So, for anyone who is still interested, just PM me again and I will keep you updated on the progress. I'm still planning on turning him into a physical model, and the story outline I have is still being worked out.
Sorry for the long silence.

I would buy one in a heartbeat - can't wait to see what else is on the horizon!
Good luck with the data recovery.

In anime style art, there is a sugar glider named Momo on the show Samurai Champloo. Her markings are a little on the fantasy side but she's referred to as a glider in the show. There is a woman who dresses like a sugar glider in the anime Rio: Rainbow Gate episode 7. Anime is very weird, just a forewarning. There is a Pokemon now called Emolga. She's a sugar glider. Sorry if the way i posted pictures is wrong.
