So I call today to know about the usda license to breed, since soon I will be owning my first breeding trio and they said that I need a license even if I only own one breeding female just because they are exotics. I see a lot of websites that breed glider with no usda licenses because they believe that you need 4 or more unspayed females to qualify for the license but that only apply to cats and dogs. I just thought I post this here in case someone is in my same situation. You do need a license to breed no matter how many unspayed gliders you have.

When I had exactly three breeding pairs, I called to find out about licensing. They refused to send me a packet because they said that I needed to have more than three females that were able to breed to get a license. I called again the following year, I believe. I had neutered males in with females and had four intact females (even though only three were going to be bred). Again, they refused to send the packet. They told me then that if any females were not being bred, even if intact, I could not get a license. Basically, I was told that the girls in with neutered males didn't count.
I am not currently breeding, but for all the years I did, I never had a license. They wouldn't even let me get one when I asked if I could get one anyway.
I also know that it all varies by state and in some cases, it varies depending on who you talk to when you call.

I've even read of cases where people with exactly 4 breeding females were refused a license...it was like the USDA didn't feel it was worth their time to license such a small scale breeder. It's worth trying to call someone who can give you an answer about your particular situation before going to all the trouble of filling out the paperwork just to be refused.

My local USDA office had no idea what a sugar glider was or anything at all about any license being needed. They are more concerned with agriculture around here (cows, crops etc). I was not able to get them to come inspect me. So, I simply dropped down to just three breeding females (one trio and one pair). I suggest not going off of what any "forum" has to say but go straight to the source...the USDA license handbook! www.aphis.usda.gov

That is probably a State specific law. Your specific state may require USDA at one breeding female for exotic animals. It's definitely not a nationwide rule.

USDA is FEDERAL. Federal laws do not change from state to state. State laws can not determine what federal licenses you need. They can impose their own licenses in addition to the federal though or require them even if you do not qualify for the federal license.
Federal law, under APHIS/USDA, states that you must have a license if you have more than three breeding females AND are selling the offspring. If you are not selling the offspring, you can have 50 breeding females and not need a license.

So you all are right! I call today and talk to the same girl and I asked her to please verify what she told me yesterday and boom you need 4 or more for the license. She just was confused with other wild animals that do require licenses for only one breeding female. Since sugar gliders are considered pocket animals and are now common like hedgehogs we dont need a license for 3 intact females. Woot!
I dont need to go through all the hassle yet!
Thanks everyone for your post.

USDA is a license for if you have a certain number of breeding animals. I can mean actual breeding and producing of young or breedable as in not fixed.. From what I've heard it depends on the inspector but if you aren't breeding it's not something you need to get. USDA License does NOT mean that they are a great breeder. Always make sure to do research on the person you are thinking of buying from

I can mean actual breeding and producing of young or breedable as in not fixed.. From what I've heard it depends on the inspector The law as written is MORE than 3 BREEDING females. That means of breeding age and housed with intact males (meaning they CAN get pregnant). The different inspectors do interpret it differently but when it comes right down to it, they have to follow the law as written. I have 3 breeding females right now (I so have to get these boys neutered!) but I have a total of 27 gliders. Pretty evenly split male/females. They do not count the ones that are in non breeding situations (either housed with other girls or with neutered boys or young female joeys).

If you do not have more than 3 breeding females, they will not license you. I do agree that being USDA licensed does not mean "reputable breeder". It means the breeder is following the law, paying their annual fees, and subject to at least one surprise inspection per year.
