After researching diets and trying to choose one for my gliders, I am pretty sure I am going to feed Priscilla's diet. However, I don't really like The Pet Glider Complete multivitamin that goes in this diet. What if I left it out? Think that would be ok?

Ok
Nope. The vitamins contain calcium and a dried milk product for calcium. If left out, your glider is sure to get HLP if no other supplement is given.

These diet plans are complete, they're designed to be fed exactly as they are written down. Change the ingredients and you change the whole diet.

What don't you like about the vits? I LOVE them because they are specifically made for gliders whereas many other vits that are commonly used are reptile vits. Most of what's in P's vits are products that gliders would naturally consume in the wild.

I agree, the vitamins and calcium are a very important part of any of the proven diets, as mentioned above, they cna and most likely will suffer from HLP (hind leg paralysis). Please don`t leave that out of their diet.

Also, welcome to GC <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wave.gif" alt="" />!!

Yogart alone is high in calcium. If the diet is complete with the vitamin supplement- why is it suggested to use high calcium phosph ratios with diet- that's an awful lot of calcium.

Also I wouldn't just sprinkle them on top of the food- how you know whose up first doesn't eat them all- then the other glider doesn't get any.

but that is jmho

Although the vits have calcium, they also contain acacia gum, bee pollen, and several other ingredients.

I don't like the acacia gum in the suppliment. Does anyone know how to mix the suppliment themselves? This way I could just leave the acacia gum out.

Acacia gum is extremely good for gliders. What do you not like about it? I'm trying to help, but kind of confused.

There is a long and documented post on another forum that lists several resources and states that the acacia (unless it is australian, not african) is dangerous for gliders. Although other well-respected glider owners and breeders do not agree w/this viewpoint, it is still confusing for new glider owners who only want the best for their babies and are trying to make choices despite the contradicting opinions about acacia on that forum.
The type of acacia in the petglider vitamins has been fed successfully to many gliders.

it is also said that too much calcium is not good for gliders- so how do you know when your giving too much?? - since your offering a supplement and it's provided in a natural source through foods.

"how do you know when you are giving too much?"
That is certainly one of the most important questions in feeding/supplementing our gliders and there seems to be no real consensus about this since each diet supplements a bit differently. And then there is the question of absorption. Feeding animals is 3/4 science, 1/4 art and observation of your animals. It's confusing.

I am not really very familiar with Pricilla's (although I have read through it in the past) but I thought Acacia was really good for gliders too. In fact, I thought it made up a large part of their diet in the wild.

As for the Aussie vs African, I have no idea. But if the vit supplement is specifically designed for gliders, I would think that it would have the Aussie version.

Someone whom I know has done a lot of research of her own on acacia and many other Australian diet factors is Pockets. Maybe she will post here, or you could PM her.

Priscilla is a major glider breeder with many gliders. She also took in non-producing squirrel gliders from a nearby zoo and under her care and diet, they now produce. I think that is a testimony in itself. I have had C on this diet for a year now and she is extremely healthy.

She did not add the Acacia until about 1.5 years ago. She mixes it herself so ask her to mix you some the next time she makes it and leave it out for you. I bet she would.

I was wrong as to where P got her squirrel gliders. They were not from a zoo, but an individual.

In Northern CA, I am able to cut acacia (not native acacia but senegal/African) and 2 types of eucalyptus for my gliders. I don't have any longterm experience, but they love these plants. They suck the sap from the leaves, eat the flowers, and chew the bark. Although I would not offer poisonous branches to them, somehow I think they have some innate judgement about what to eat and what parts of the plant they need. . . although this may just be wishful thinking on my part.

I never thought about asking if she could mix me a batch without the acacia gum. I'll have to see what she would say to this.

I am absolutely facinated to hear how your gliders eat the acacia plant itself. You got me looking at mail order acacia plants for the australian species (so far have only found senegal). It probably wouldn't do well here in NY all year around but I have attempted trees indoors before. (If I can keep my cats from chewing the leaves!) LOL

*added* Just found it http://www.australiaplants.com/Acacia_mearnsii.htm it says zone 8 and we are zone 5 but it says it is hardy and a bit frost resistant. Might just work if I bring it indoors in the winter.

I feed the same plants that the zoos feed koalas. These are also the branches in their cages. They eat the acacia and eucalyptus just like they eat veggies and fruit. Chew and suck until the leaf is just a little gnarled ball attached to the stem. They also chew the stems and bark and sometimes carry little stem sections w/leaves into their pouch and chew on them when they arouse briefly during the day. I haven't figured out how to get plants w/bugs but if the hibiscus gets aphids, I'll probably cut the stems w/the bugs and try that, too..
