I have read in a few different places that the flash from a camera can damage their eyes. I love taking pictures of them but I always try to not use the flash when I do even though the pictures dont come out very well. Just wondering because I know they see better in the dark and al.

If you are really worried you can put a tissue over the flash so it isn't so bright:-)

As long as you aren't taking picture after picture, a non stop flash, it isn't a problem to take flash pics of them.

I don't use flash, I just take them to the brightest room in my house to take pictures because when I use flash they freak out so I don't use it.

I use ambient lighting, by turning a lamp shade so the light shines on the ceiling. You can also use a bright flashlight if you don't have a lamp with a movable shade. It reflects enough light to take good pics but not enough light to hurt their eyes.

Camera flash does to glider's eyes what it does to human eyes. It can be uncomfortable for a few seconds but it leaves no permanent damage.

Judge not until you have walked in their shoes and lived their lives. What you see online is only part of the story.

One of my girls loves the flash .. in fact she loves the whole camera!

So much so it's impossible to get a good picture of her because the second she sees a camera she decides she has to climb all over it and check it out herself!

If you have questions about camera settings and such, I may be able to help a bit. I love taking photos and as soon as I have my suggies I'll be loading tons of them to flickr.

I currently shoot with a Canon 7D and am quite familiar with the UI on it as well as most Canon DSLR (UIs tend to remain fairly normative across models).

If you shoot with a Nikon and such, I won't know the UI itself but can give you points on which settings will work best.

If you have the capability, always use Manual Focus versus Auto.

Happy Shooting!

So it's ok to continue taking flash photos of your gliders? Just checking, I don't do it often, but when I do, I usually take a few at a time.

While the general consensus is that it doesn't harm their eyes, I wouldn't go wild with taking the pictures. I would think that a few pictures here and there wouldn't do any harm, anymore than looking at the sun for a very brief moment from time to time. I would say, however, that because they are nocturnal, their eyes are going to be more susceptible to the excessively bright light of a flash.

If you have a newer point and shoot camera, it is likely that it will have a "Night Time" shooting mode. This should prevent the camera from firing its flash.

If you're using a DSLR camera, check the 4 following settings:

1.) ISO set higher than 400
2.) F-Stop is set as low as it will go
3.) If you're shooting AutoFocus, set the AF to AI-Servo
4.) Adjust the shutter speed accordingly

My girls are obsessed with the camera....the whole thing including the strap....anything to climb on....the minute I turn the camera and they hear the lense come out..they are there...its cute but it makes it difficult for me to take pictures...
