I am shipping baby gliders to NH on thursday morning and Delta has me just baffled on what is required for the cage to ship them in. When I have recieved gliders shipped through delta they have come in a cat carrier and inside the gliders were in a rubbermaid container with a ton of air holes drilled in it. However now delta says that is not ok. They say we have to put wire screen over the door and air holes. Wire screen is not supposed to be safe for the gliders...anyone have suggestions for how to properly package the babies???

You can put the wire screen over the holes on the cat crate but not the kritter keeper on the inside. Meets their requirements but is still safe for the gliders. They wouldn't be getting out of the inside container anyway. The screen is just a precaution JUST in case they do.

I have shipped thru delta without the wire screen in the way you have received your babies with no problem. Don't forget the health cert that delta requires... It must be within 10 days of shipping

Delta told me no health certificate was required for gliders.

Hmm. They told me it was required when I shipped last summer. Maybe its because I was shipping to WA and there are special requirements. That might be the case.

Hmmm.. I would suggest getting all of their current requirements in writing before you try and ship them. That way there is no question as to what is or isn't needed, and no delays in the fuzzies getting to where they need to go..

Delta for sure does not require health certificate for the gliders but good god they are being wierd about shipping containers. We had a container that our noelle arrived in that is a live animal shipping container for the airlines and they won't approve it because it has ventilation on the top of the box.
Any suggestions on how to put a wire mesh on the door and window holes so the cat carrier will meet their requirements yet still be safe for our babies?

Does it have to be wire? Or can you use the hardware cloth thats safe for the babies and ziptie it to the windows and door on the inside?

According to Delta's website listing their policies, the DO require a health certificate. However, that being said, each airline employee seems to have their own interpretation of the rules or how strict they enforce them. Some allow more than 2 animals per crate however their written policies state a max of 2 per crate. So its probably better to have a print out of those policies, follow them, and also ensure your airport representatives are on the same page(if possible, find out who will be there the morning of the flight so that its consistent...when I was shipped gliders, we heard 2 or 3 different versions of the "rules" and it was chaotic for sure not to mention the crate ending up being crushed because they put the gliders with the baggage and sent them down baggage claim!

Sara you are right every employee has their own version of the rules and what is required. This last lady looked it up in the books however and told me it states only dogs aND CATS are required the health certificates. Luckily the babies only have one layover in salt lake city and then onto boston.

They really need to get on the ball and be consistent...would make things a lot easier on us!

I shipped in December and didn't need a health certificate. I put mesh over the front of the shipping crate. What might be cool is if someone could sew a "bonding cube" Like a bonding pouch with a zipper but a cube so they could move a bit more.

I agree that Delta has a seriously strange way of doing things. I put up with it because they are the only airline that ships to my location, but last time I picked up a glider at the airport do you know they didn't even ask for my ID??? That kind of ticked me off!

I personally don't like Delta. I've had much better luck with Continental (now United).

You mean like a miniature Glide-arium? Made to fit snug inside of the cat carrier. I discussed this with Nancy not too long ago.

Yep, there might be a market for Ship-ariums!

You can zip-tie PVC coated hardware cloth to the outside of the door to the crate and the ventilation holes on the sides. Be sure to replace the bolts with steel ones if they are plastic - I found that out last time I shipped Delta. They had some at the cargo counter just for that purpose because the requirements were not listed accurately on the website. Delta also could not find a category for sugar gliders so they were listed as "rats" on the manifest. shock

The idea of a glide-arium to fit inside a cat kennel is a fantastic one. Someone needs to make one. The lady buying the gliders called me tonight about the delta regulations and told me to ship them in the container noelle came in through delta. She says she got gliders not so long ago through delta from Lisa at suncoast in the exact same containers. We are going to try it and if they turn us down we'll try the cat carrier next week. The 1st guy I had talked to at delta told me this contaier was ok so we will pretend no one told us otherwise.

Guess that would be me since I make them! :roflmao2:

Continental classifies them as rodents. It's the only time i allow that reference to my gliders. smile

Not sure if you still need help on this one..but my cage is made out of vinyl coated wire. Its safe for them and they have not chewed or anything on it. It bends just like wire also. Comes in rolls at home depot or ace hardware. $7-10. I think that would work? They have 1/2 inch by 1/2 inch.
