I've just been offered another set of gliders that need homing - two young males (brothers), one of which has very serious cataracts.

I'm considering giving them both a forever home with me, but was wondering if there was anything I could do to make the special little boy's life a little bit easier?

Any advice would be appreciated!

Hi Cerian, that's a good question. I've never had a glider with cataracs so I'm not sure what the answer is, but my best guess would be to set things up in a similar way to how you would for a blind baby. Here is a post on caring for blind gliders. It might give you some ideas.

[:"green"]Hi Ceri,
My Pika is blind in both eyes - she has a cataract in her left eye & corneal scarring on her right eye with a cataract developing in that eye as well. The way that I set up her cage is actually quite simple. First of all, her pouch is at the bottom of the cage so that if she stumbles on the way out of it, she won't fall far. Next, I have 3 No Sew Shelf Hammocks in the cage at varying heights. The lowest hammock is half the width of the cage and is only 3 inches off the floor, located right up against the pouch - again so that if she stumbles out of the pouch she will have a soft landing. The next hammock is halfway up the cage and is the full size of the cage - this gives her an area where she can play, eat and hang out without worrying about falling off the edge. The third one is about 6 inches from the top of the cage & is half the width of it. This gives her a third tier to play on, and if she falls off the edge, she'll land on the middle tier. This has worked quite well for her. Other things to remember are to always put the food and water in the exact same place in the cage so that the glider can always locate them. I'll try to get a picture of her cage for you so you can see how it's set up for her...

[:"green"]Sorry it took me a few days to get these pictures, but life has been really hectic this summer...
There are 3 pictures in all... This first one is an overview of the entire cage, you can see all 3 hammocks and the glider kitchen in this one...

[:"green"]This one is a close-up showing the pouch positioning with the hammock next to & below the pouch to help prevent falls when getting out of the pouch...
