I had to take Kirby to the vet's today and I had a heck of a time catching him while he is in his cage. He is not easily bribed by treats and unfortunately will not jump into a pouch/container if you hold one in front of him or gently usher him in. He will perch on my hands for treats and let me pet him, but only if he comes to me (he will not let me scoop him up). Any tips for catching/handling difficult or unbonded gliders while they are in their cage? Also, I had a heck of a time getting Tanooki BACK in her cage after playtime last night...again, treats and ushering into a pouch/cool container did not work. Ideas?

The main thing never to do is to try chase them around the cage or play area. This will set back the bonding process. If offering them a pouch and treats doesn't work you can try scoop them up in a large piece of fleece. Just cover your hands with it and gently catch them up. The fleece will help protect you from being bitten. To catch them out of the cage you will need to spend more time just sttting with them and wait until they start coming to your hand or arm to jump on. Once they learn that the hand/arm is what takes them out for play time they will do it all the time. Then you'll have the problem of how to put your hand in the cage without trying to take them out It's really all about spending quality time with them and having lots of patience

Ah, I tried the light switch trick and Tanooki just looked at me like "Why'd you flip that on, mom?" That seems like such a cool trick, I wish it would work on them. They seem to be not very light sensitive.
Lorna, lol, Tanooki is already climbing on my shoulders and such and grooming my hair, it is so cute!!! The tough part was to get her off my back into her cage (I think if I had let her she would have ridden piggyback on me all night, but I was ready for bed!)

Getting them back in the cage can be really hard. I had a total juggling act with them last night, and I had a friend with me. Sampson and Maverick spent their first night together (and I slept on the couch so I was nearby just in case). Anyway, they were both super hyper, and we'd get one in the cage, and the other would jump out. It took about a million tries to finally get both in the cage at the same time--So I guess I don't have any helpful advice on that. My friend got a really good laugh out of it, though...

Wait till they are in the pouch in the cage to take him out if you're having trouble. Also turning the lights on will help speed the process of him going back into the pouch.

I seem to be bad at catching them in the fleece...I try to approach them slowly and steadily with it and they run away. Maybe I'm doing it wrong? Any tips? Haha, aproductof, sounds exactly like my "battle" with Tanooki, except I was home alone and she was perched right between my shoulderblades where I couldn't reach her. I turned the light on and held her pouch out and everything, bribed her with treats, tried to get her to climb on something else so I could toss a towel over her and catch her, everything. Finally I just walked into my living room and put my shoulder next to the cage. She jumped on top of the cage, and I scooped her up and set her inside. It kind of worried me though because our living room is connected to our kitchen, neither of which are glider-proofed. Hey, I guess it's a good sign she doesn't want to stop the playtime, right?

I miss my little fuzzbutts. Tanooki has grown into an explorer to say the least. That used to be her brothers trick, and he loved to climb the curtains. In fact mama and daddy are both sleeping on me right now. LOL I find that mine like to play to, and sometimes I have difficulty putting them back as well, but sometimes I just leave a bonding pouch open, that or they go in my hair as to think that I am going to wear there hairstyle out in public, and am able to put them in the cage that way. I just love gliders. Smart little things, but they have such a big heart if they are brought up right.

I use a thick dowel for emergencies. If a glider is running around inside the cage and you don't have much time, then grab a dowel and hold it near the glider. Gliders love dowels and will climb on it. I have used dowels many times when our gliders were out of our reach, like behind the cages or above the cage or even on the middle of my back. I simply hold the dowel and gently slide the dowel underneath them on the side and most of the time they will get on it. Then, I put the dowel inside the cage and wait for the glider to jump off and close the cage door. To me, dowels work like a charm.

Serina, she's definitely turned into an explorer with a big heart. She was definitely brought up right :-) You guys are the best!
Jen and Suz, thank you for the additional ideas too! I will try those out! I really appreciate it.

Now you know I have never thought of the dowel idea. That is a new one, but hey, that is how we learn.

I just happened to have a dowel within my reach and just grabbed it and found that it worked like a charm.

I wanted to add another trick I just found has been working well with mine (finally): they are both obsessed with their wodent wheels. If I put a wodent wheel in the tent, they will hop in. I then gently cover the openings with a towel, carry WW to cage, hold up to cage door, remove towel from one opening, and then they shoot out into the cage! This is pretty much the only thing that has worked consistently for me so far. Maybe it will work for other suggies too :-)

I hope this doesn't sound too silly.
What on earth is a dowel??

A dowel is a wooden piece used when constructing shelves and whatnot, like a long circular piece of wood. At least that is always how I thought of a dowel! Hope this is correct!

Yep, sugar_and_spice, that is correct! Dowel rods are found in most hardware stores and they come in various diameters but usually a yard (3 feet) long.

sugar and spice was right about a dowel. it's just a long circular piece of wood...like a perch in a bird cage. They're real cheap...usually less than a dollar and oyu can get them at any hardware store or lowes or home depot or stores like that.

You've already gotten many wonderful tips here so I only have my own catching method to add, lol. If it's during the day while they are sleeping ours are very easy. All we do is reach in and pick one up and put them in our bra or bonding pouch depending on what we're doing. If it's at nite, it's much the same, esp if they're not up and awake yet. If they are awake already and running around the cage, we just open the door and in a matter of seconds they are running out and running to us. Sure does make it convenient Keep trying everything until you find the method that works best for you and your suggies!
